The time delays and passing the buck are all telling. This coverup was about nothing more than preserving the football team and reputation of Penn State instead of reporting the crime and acting upon it.
If we look at a time line, this is how it went down:
March 2002: McQuery observed Sandusky molest a 10 year old boy.
McQuery called his father but did not report it to anyone associated with Penn State University.
24 hours after witnessing the attack, McQuery finally did report the sexual assault to Coach Paterno.
Paterno waited an additional 24 hours before reporting what McQuery had seen to Athletic Director Curley.
Between the time Paterno notified Curley, there must have been discussions about the the incident with P.S.U.V.P Schultz, who was responsible for P.S.U. Campus Police. It was between 10 and 12 days before Curley and Schultz questioned McQuery about the sexual attack.
14 days later Curley notified McQuery, Sandusky had turned in his locker room keys.
Second Mile was notified of the incident and despite having this information plus knowledge of two previous sexual encounters with young boys, failed to take an action against Sandusky until six years later.
Curley also told P.S.U.President Spanier of the incidents, that Sandusky had turned in his keys to the locker room and he was no longer permitted to bring young boys on campus.
In the end, McQuery, Paterno, Curley, Schultz and Spanier knew of the incident(S), treated treated them as benign and pushed the issue under the rug with the thought Penn State was too big and too powerful to report such trivial events.
That is the time line. People knew for more than 12 years and no one did a damn thing! This should be a lesson to all universities who think they are above the law or public scrutiny.
Love Penn State or hate them, what the people involved and knew but tried to cover up is disgusting! As a publicly funded state university they have a lot to answer for.
