Time to get the #3 back on the track.

If someone else wanted to run the number ,he would just have to go to Childress and ask " Hey Richard ,are you goin to use that old number 3?"..Richard would reply , "When I'm ready." ......Standoff.

So if 3M wanted the Bif to run the #3 they'd have to talk to Childress and not NASCAR?

That's the way I understand it . If Childress says no ,but refuses to use it himself , Nascar could step in and mediate.In the end Nascar could make a call but it won't come to that , public pressure one way or the other will dictate .

True. I don't see nascar withstanding all that pressure from the Biffle fans.

Kelly is a great person to get answers from. I got to ask a couple during her nascom live chat, and her answers were concise, thorough and insightful.
 
I don't recall but was the 43 off the track for a year or two after Richard retired? Different circumstances I know.

Dale Sr was a icon who was tragically lost at the crown jewel of the sport. A lot of his fans felt his number should be retired as numbers in other sports are. I was a fan but disagree with retiring his number but a black #3 will bring back many good memories, and one not so good.
 
It looks like I'm in the minority here, but I have no desire to see the #3 back on the track, and if I did, I would only want to see Jr. behind the wheel of it (never gonna happen again). I've read about the #43, but that's not even close to the same situation. Sr. didn't just retire like Petty did. Sr. was a living legend. Sure, that would bring back some good memories for me, as well as many others, but it would also bring back one huge bad memory every time I saw it. I personally don't want to look at a car on the race track week in and week out and be reminded of death each time I saw it. Let that number belong to one man, and one man only from here on out. Don't tarnish the #3 by putting another driver in it the will never live up to the man that last drove it. There will never be another #3, so let's not put a #3 out there again.

Oh I know he has at least one. Few years ago at Texas some a-hole took off his shirt and every time Biffle came by he would raise it like a flag. Blocked some many's view.

That was a horrible day. I'm happy nascar quickly instituted the hans rule and we haven't seen another death since.

Unfortunately many now know what the Red # 2 coloring is all about. One redneck even asked for a bloody dog, that was a little crude and rude imo.

.....and the safer barrier and the COT framework. All of these things and more have been a huge step in drivers safety over the years. It is extremely unfortunate that they put off great strides in safety until that day. They had numerous examples of the same type of injuries well before then. I don't just say this because of the death of Dale Earnhardt. I say it because of all of the drivers that we lost in similar fashion.

As far as retiring the #3 goes, which I read earlier, I think that would be the wrong thing to do. Dale Earnhardt was a man just like any other. No more or less important. How can it be justified to retire that number with all of the others lost before him? It can't.
 
It is just a number and there will never be another Dale Sr.
But I do think it is a mistake on Dillon's part, I would rather establish my own way.
I wouldn't want to run the 24, 48, 14 numbers in the future either, it draws a comparison that is almost impossible to win
 
Snot nosed punk, even has the number canted as Sr did. He wants to make his own name? Why not use another number.
Nascar HAS retired a number before. The #61 modified driven by Ritchies Evans
