TMS to repave too.

"The renovation will add a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement, an expansive French drainage system on the frontstretch and backstretch, and reduce the banking in Turns 1 and 2 by four degrees."

Sounds like they did learn something at KY about banking in the turns.

However, I thought the weeper / drainage problems were in the turns, not on the straightaways. Since there not taking the old asphalt up, it doesn't look like they're going to address those problems.

    This makes no sense.

Changing the banking angle requires a regrade of the substructure ... the asphalt has to be removed to do that.

"For years, I've heard the absurd comments about 1.5-mile tracks being tagged as 'cookie-cutter' tracks," Gossage said. "While nothing could be further from the truth - all 1.5-mile tracks are different - this assures once and for all that Texas Motor Speedway is unique, unlike any other track in the sport. That's the way we like it here in No Limits, Texas."

No disrespect, but a 4 degree decrease in banking does not elminate you from 'cookie cutter' status nor make you all that unique.

It's still a 1.5 mile oval with a front-stretch dogleg accommodating the Legends oval. I understand they're quite different from inside the cockpit, but from grandstands the only diff is whether there's one dogleg or two. There's nothing that can be done with a repave alone that will separate it from its brethren.

I am not sure what they are doing with the banking. what I took is they said 4 degrees less banking in turn 1 and 2 leaving in place the original banking in 3 and 4. so that would mean banking would increase as the corner exits. is there any other tracks that have done that?
  15. Acs

    Acs Team Owner

It should be said now that TMS is getting re-configured that there are now no longer two cup tracks which are identical. In terms of banking, length, and configuration TMS and Charlotte were the last two which were truly "cookie cutters" of each other.

One entire end of the track, including transitions, is scheduled to have its banking decreased by 4 degrees.

That's a little bit better news.

I feel like Texas Spring, Charlotte Fall, Kansas Spring should lose races to Gateway, Iowa, Road America. Lengthen this race to 550 miles.

Thanks to that extra .04 miles at Atlanta! Kidding aside, this is a great thing and the kind of change those of us on this forum considered to be traditionalists will probably support (at least I do).

It never ceases to amaze me how every time someone on here proposes dropping races from the "cookie cutters" in favor of their favorite short track or whatever they always pick some of the best attended events on the entire schedule. Look at the stands, they don't lie. Both Kansas and texas races were darn-near full despite fall TX's rain. Charlotte fall likely would have been too had it not been for rain. Can't say the same for spring Bristol, Martinsville, or Atlanta.

Kansas and Texas have the advantage over Bristol and M'ville of being located in major metropolitan areas. It's much easier to sell out when there's more local population to draw from. Don't take selling out as a measure of overall popularity or of the relative quality of the racing.

Atlanta's problem is they'/re stuck with the same cold wet spring weather that was a factor in killing Rockingham.

Kansas absolutely wasn't close to full in the fall. I was there.

Texas was a rain delayed race but I thought the crowd wasn't great for the night.

  24. I have always been partial to French draining systems over Belgian or Swiss. I think the French Broad River drains into Tennessee or maybe the other way around into North Carolina. Either way it works.

I think Texas will have a Mexican drain system. Thats a lot closer and cheaper piping than draining to France, Swiss, or Belgium.

They are going to repave this track, altering the banking and the like and have it done in time for the next Cup race there. Heard it said this morning on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that Goodyear will not have time to test and develop a tire in time for that race. Rather, they are going to have to go off of estimated tire wear. This could be real interesting or real problematic.
  35. Charlie Spencer

Charlie Spencer Short tracks and road courses rule.

I recall reading on Jayski that Goodyear will extrapolate from the similar changes made at Kentucky.

I don't see how that can possibly help, since "Texas Motor Speedway is unique, unlike any other track in the sport."

Nooooo! Repaving TMS is a necessary evil, I suppose.

Did anyone else notice that TMS will reduce the banking in turns 1 & 2 by widening the race track 20 feet? Turns 1 & 2 will go from 60 to 80 feet wide. Seems silly if you ask me, as most of the race track is 60 feet wide.
