MOORESVILLE, N.C. (December 14, 2011) - Penske Racing announced today that Todd Gordon is the new crew chief of the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge Charger in the NASCAR Cup Series. The internal move comes on the heels of a successful 2011 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) campaign, during which Gordon led the No. 22 Discount Tire Dodge Charger to six wins and six pole positions.
"Our first priority is always to look within the walls of Penske Racing when making personnel decisions," said Roger Penske. "We want to reward success. The path we are taking with Todd mirrors what we did with Paul Wolfe who led the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge to a Chase berth in 2011. We think Todd can get the job done in the same manner."

Gordon made the move to Penske Racing in January of 2011. He and Brad Keselowski quickly developed a driver-crew chief rapport that resulted in another successful season, helping make the No. 22 Dodge one of the premier entries in NNS competition.

"I can't thank Roger and everyone at Penske Racing enough for this vote of confidence," said Gordon. "It's an honor to step into a race-winning team. We have a lot of work ahead of us, but this is an organization full of talented people that know how to get the job done. I look forward to getting the Shell/Pennzoil Dodge back in Victory Lane."

Penske Racing continues to evaluate drivers to fill the seat of the No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Dodge.

Penske Racing is one of the most successful teams in the history of professional sports. Competing in a variety of disciplines, cars owned and prepared by Penske Racing have produced 350 major race wins, 412 pole positions and 23 National Championships. That's 2 crew chiefs Brad has teamed with in NW and helped make the move up to Cup.

Wow...not only is he inexperienced in cup but has no relationship built with whoever is going to drive the car .How is that going to move the program forward?

I agree, I don't like this move. I say team him with Hornish next year. Ifvtgey are both successful in NNS next year then move them up together in 2013.

Perhaps they will move Travis Geisler to CC hornish in NW, if they can get that deal done. Those 2 were together in Cup for a long time. Then they can go get themselves a real competition director. ;)

It is a strange move, but you can bet Kez had a lot of input.

They are a two car factory effort with no other teams to draw info from. They are really behind the eight ball and getting farther behind.Brad is now their lead driver and he has what ? two years experience ? He could well drop to 20th this year in a heartbeat . His teams only chance is to have a teammate with at least, equal strength .Unless Jimmy and Chad are moving to Penske , their program could drop off the radar.

Todd Gordon and Paul Wolfe worked together at CJM. This could be a good CC tandem. Penske praised Paul for raising the bar at the organization, and Todd has an engineering degree. Maybe this will eventually lead to the CC's having more input into the cars.

Bit of a gamble isn't it . It would be very embarassing to get beat by Phoenix Racing with Kurt driving.

Kurt in Hendrick equiptment could beat a lot of top teams. I remember a rookie who got a win and 4 top 10's in 12 races with HMS equiptment, then got just 2 top 10's in 36 races with Penske the next year.

But they have the full attention from their manufacture.

Gotta be an odd feeling getting promoted to a Cup CC and not even having a driver yet. Has that ever happened before? What will he do, walk into the shop and say "Hi #22 car, I'm your new Crew Chief?" LOL

That was good.:D

On the positive side , Roger's crew chief and driver expense is pretty darn low.You gotta love that.

I'm guessing that they have it figured out who the driver is. It's us that's in the dark on this.

I'll wait to see how this all plays out before passing judgement on the move. Todd's been around a little while as a crew chief in the Nationwide series and has recently found some success there having won 5 times this year with Keselowski. You've gotta start somewhere. I wish him success.

LOL

I wasn't around here back when this thread was around but yes... I would say it's paid off nicely... well... once he got the right driver.

Todd is smart... I don't know how he pull off some of the stuff he does but I love watching it happen. He's like a wizard with over night adjustments and his strategy calls have worked every single week for about half this season. No finish worse than 6th since Indy other than that late wreck at Atlanta with Harvick and Menard, finished 14th... up until last week at Dega (11th). Even the times when Joeys running like crap (which is now about 8th-12th place :D ) he manages to squeak out a top 5 somehow.

Heavy metal? Not familiar with hair metal either.

Good enough. You just earned some serious cool points in my book. Guess you're not a complete n00b after all. :D

(Kidding, obviously.)
