Top 10 drivers in wins at or over the age of 40

  3. Dale Earnhardt 26

  4. Dale Jarrett 24

  5. Cale Yarborough 23

  8. Matt Kenseth 17

That list is really apparent that Jeff Gordon kinda sorta fell off the older he got. I for sure thought he’d have more wins than DW in their 40’s, shocked.

Mark Martin only won four races from 2000-2008 (Martinsville 2000, Charlotte 2002, Dover 2004, Kansas 2005 - sad I remember that off the top of my head), then he went to Hendrick and went on an unholy tear in 2009.

So true..... drivers are getting out earlier now and starting their cup careers much much earlier as well. I could see Harvick hanging around in his 50's and maybe Kyle Busch or Keslowski. but outside of that I think youre right that list is safe.
 
It was common 25+ years ago a driver wouldn't get a good Cup ride until he was in his 30's. Many felt like the drivers were starting to get good at that point. Jeff Gordon came along and changed that thinking. We won't see many drivers racing into their 40's let alone winning 10+ races in their 40's.
 
It says Harvick only has one win to go to tie for 10th. They must not be counting he cucumber because the stats show 14. Johnson isn't even close

Bobby and Handsome Harry were both winning in their fifties. Bobby won the 88 Daytona 500 at 50. I don't think Harry was a rookie until he was 40. Bobby had remarkable stamina. That guy was amazing.

I think Bobby is still the oldest driver to win a Cup championship, he was a couple weeks shy of his 46th birthday when he won the ‘83 title.

Less this, more that Gordon started out much earlier than the rest and enjoyed more success than 80% of those on the list.

I kind of think with the early start he had and his out this world early career numbers he should have had more success than anyone in nascar on any kind of list. I can’t confidently say that because after 2007, he really did fall off. I’m not going in hard, the numbers support it. He got passed in stature by his own teammate while still even driving.

And, keep in mind Bobby drove for Bud Moore, Harry Ranier, DiGard, Himself and the Stavola Brothers all after 40. And his career ended at 50. One wonders what he might have accomplished had he ever settled in to a steady, long term ride.
 
Gordon had 9, Johnson has 9, Martin had 10, Stewart had 10...really tough to even reach double-digits past that age these days. It makes it that much more impressive what Kenseth was able to accomplish. JGR was a rebirth of sorts for him. I still can't believe how badly that #20 team imploded at Phoenix in 2013.
