Toyota / SaveMart 350 At Sonoma Pre-Race Thread

Thought the cars looked as bad as they did in the COT days--driving on 3 wheels and everything. The only part of road course racing I hate is that the cars are not engineered for it IMO. They look like they are trying to do something they shouldn't be doing.

I disagree. I think that's the part I love most. Road courses have been that way for as long as I can remember. Search road course races for Dale Sr. and the real action photos seldom show 4 tires on the ground at the same time. This is why the hired "road course ringers" are disappearing. They can't drive stock cars on a road course as well as the successful NASCAR oval track winners. This task is best left to those that know what they're doing. It's the same reason that open wheel and road course drivers don't do well in stock cars on ovals.
JMO.

Senior went up on two after hitting the curb--I get that. On three wheels in the S's when your car has four perfectly good ones is a car out of its element IMO.

So s'plain why the road course ringers can't beat the Cup guys at Sonoma or Watkins Glen...

may be the reason he only had 1 road course win in his career

I'm just ready for some good racing this weekend. It will be the last Nascar racing i will get to watch for a while.

Because the Cup guys are bad ass. No, don't get me wrong man, the drivers are wringing everything out of a car that doesn't want to do what it is doing because it was engineered to turn left. Not arguing the way the guys are driving them.

Road course ringers usually get to drive the crappy cars by default since no notable driver is going to take themselves out of the car for a weekend. This weekend the ringers are driving for Go FAS Racing, Circle Sport, and Jay Robinson Racing so they don't have much of a chance to begin with. Those teams usually put the ringers in since it's their best chance for Top 20-25 finishes.

I know Dale only had one road course win but he was really aggressive back in the day. I loved watching him run a road course.
Reply to Revman: These guys are driving oval stock cars on a road course. The rear end has a solid axle, no IRS here.

4 tires on racing surface is always better than 3

A very good point, and kind of my point. The cars are out of their element. I get where you are coming from man. Not disagreeing with you in the least.

I think Allmendinger was saying that he was carrying the left from 12 inches off of the racing surface through the S's.

Never gonna happen on a road course without independent 4-wheel suspension.

A very good point. As stupid as I sound, I had never thought of that. Just learned something. Thanks.

So, are the cars Marcos drove Down Under Independent suspension? How much of a departure is this for him?

Clutch would be the best one to answer that. I have NFI. :D

Just got off my lazy ass and looked it up....sure enough independent. What must Marcos think wheeling these dinosaurs?

note....drivers hit curbs on Purpose !

will vegas put out line on which back marker team will put car on track ta screw #9's q time tomorrow ?

Marcos Ambrose is a badass wheelman. there's ya'lls road course ringer. Allmendinger has speed as well. I for one LOVE how stock cars drive on road courses. These cars are crude as hell on these tracks. Like nothing else out there.

I'm an Ambrose fan, no matter what.

Road racing is some of the most fun to watch for me, I really like the way they take these ridged frame cars through all the twists and turns. It puts the drivers back in control as the car has to turn left and right and needs to have a real stock type of alignment setup. Off camber turns are going to generally cause the lightest wheel to lift off the ground mashing the gas coming out of the turn, tons of weight distribution going on in the wink of an eye.

Exactly. Apples to oranges. But whaaaaaaa everyone hates Kyle for no reason, its not fair, woe is me

So Joe Gibbs provides a nationwide car and everything that goes along with it just to feed Kyles ego ??
Is it possible that Gibbs lets Kyle race that car to secure a solid sponsor like Monster Energy ??

Huge diff between a cup rookie racing to figure out a track they've never raced on and a cup vet racing on the same tracks just to fuel an ego.

Cup veteran racing Nationwide for his boss who now has a great sponsor in the cup series------------------- MONSTER ENERGY

I am certain Gibbs probably likes Kyle Busch but is he willing to spend millions to "feed Kyles ego" LOL  REALITY HAS EMERGED

Kyle must have something really big on the coach to blackmail him into doing that.:D

The fact of the matter is that people get tired of seeing a Cup driver race in a lesser series almost every weekend and dominate the competition. Doesn't matter who the driver is, fans would get tired of it unless it's their favorite driver. Nobody is picking on your boy just because it's Kyle.

Well of ol' Joe wants to win another championship he better give the redskins a call ;)

I could care less how much you guys pick on Rowdy, my point is that he is racing a car for his BOSS in the nationwide series, his boss has a reason for spending that kind of money, feeding mr Buschs ego probably isnt that reason
