Really good! The rivalry truly existed between the fan bases. The energy that permeated throughout a track back in the day was tangible. I really wish Fox at least made reference to "Fans Against Gordon". You couldn't walk 10 feet without seeing a sign or shirt or hat that said it. It was corny and it would ruffle more feathers than it's worth these days but it was pure.

The fans and live experienced made NASCAR! That's what hurts me the most about modern day NASCAR. It's about the journey. The instant gratification and highlight seeking just doesn't work in distance auto racing.

More than likely because the “Fans Against Gordon” club created the name using “f a g” as the TLA after Dale joked about Gordon’s sexuality. FOX doesn’t need the negative press showing ignorant fans parading pejorative terms about gay people.

Yeah we need more adults telling young kids that their driver is a phaggot.

It was a bitter rivalry that found me laughing when the news reported Earnhardt's Daytona 01' crash, followed by the anchor stating that he had died. I felt terrible and will never forget it.

The sport blew up and was better because of it though. That's for damned sure.

Absolutely! It was the perfect non-PC acronym at the time! A few years before Cartman made it popular again on South Park. You couldn't miss it when attending the track and no one really cared or had their feelings hurt. It wasn't in the best taste. Neither were the "show us your ****!!" chants that could be heard throughout parking lots and infields...lol.

An ESPN 30 for 30 would have dug up the dirty stuff. Where's the tire soaking conspiracy?

Nope but history is fascinating. The 30 for 30 Big East basketball documentary was great. As a Big 5 alum (Temple) the way Villanova (our big hoops rival) students were singled out for their treatment of Patrick Ewing and the those vaunted 1980's John Thompson Georgetown teams was crazy. They did not hide the fact bananas were thrown at him. There were also numerous racially motivated signs that were proudly shown in the student section. This happened at other schools but they really hammered the 'Nova folks. Banners and roll-outs remain a college bball tradition in Philly.

Going to a race and drinking beer for several hours always led to a great use of vocabulary and "creative" discussion. There was nothing like attending a NASCAR race in the 1990's. I was still a kid/teenager yet I was smart enough to take in what I was experiencing/seeing. I'm not saying the racing was better than previous generations. But the the sheer volume of the crowds and passion that existed is literally indescribable. I could only imagine what it was like to spend a July weekend in the Talladega infield circa 1995/1996.

I thought it was well done and I enjoyed it. Earnhardt besides being a heck of a driver was also a savvy showman and I am glad it showed that part of it. Young Gordon coming along at the time he did was golden.
 
Just got finished up watching. I had goosebumps the entire time, instead of saying we will never see a rivalry like that again....I Hope to see we will see something that will approach that intensity in the future. I had no idea about the Voodo doll, I had never heard that! So cool....and I didn’t remember the 95 championship being that close. Earnhardt really did make it closer than I remember. They did play it up as being closer than what it was after Jeff’s first Cup but I feel the rivalry was over after that, the 24 team really kicked everyone’s behind until Ray left in 99. The one thing that I found interesting was they asked the question in 01 was if Earnhardt survived that crash could he have made another go of it? Awesome doc.... (Senna remains my favorite though, I almost cry at the end every damn time I watch it. When they show Prost as a pallbear....really gets me) really captured my childhood being a Gordon fan. And yes I heard crap talked to me when I wore my Gordon shirts around my dad’s friends. Also got crap talked in person by a complete stranger in 98 when I wore one of my Gordon shirts to a Chicago Bears game, the rivalry was real.

Damn right it was real. My wife and I quit wearing any 24 stuff in 98 or 99 because of the constant harassment. I still gave'em hell cheering and booing though.
 
You know it's a shame they didn't do a Championship 4 in this era. Could you imagine Jeff and Dale going at it in Atlanta for a title. Damn
 
I really hope in the future theres an Earnhardt vs Bodine documentary, those boys were out to kill each other. YouTube can only do so much to educate.
