US Army pulls NASCAR Sponsorship beginning in 2013

It's like everything else ....it was the "in thing to do", ride the popularity of Nascar when it was at its' height. I bet if Nascar was still getting high ratings and selling out every where they wouldn't be pulling their sponsorship. I wonder if they will do this in NHRA also??

You can read about that in Mike Honcho's post 36.

They can sponsor a TF car for a fraction of the money that they have to spend for a Cup car, and Tony does an awesome job representing the Army, on and off the track. But, Nascar does reach a lot more viewing audience.

NHRA is a far greater fan experience than NASCAR, so it's probably more effective for recruiting. Which is why I've never understood NASCAR claiming to be fan friendly. Sure, they're more fan friendly than NFL and NHL, but nowhere near NHRA and IndyCar in that department. A $20 pit pass in NHRA and IndyCar gives you more access than a hard card gives you in NASCAR.

According to CNN on Wolf Blitzters' show tonight the fan base of Nascar is too old. Hmm wasn't too old for 10 years of sponsorship, I don't buy it.

I agree with Wolf on that. And I can't imagine a NASCAR sponsorship swaying someone toward signing up for war. Thinking outside the NASCAR bubble, I can see why people are against military sponsorships.

The steady trickle of sponsors away from NASCAR has a lot to do with aging demographics of the fanbase. Sponsors want to hit the 16 to 35 age group, which is right where NASCAR is losing fans.

Depends Adult Diapers, Geritol, Reverse Mortgages, Life Insurance, Dibeetus Testin Supplies... NASCAR needs these.:D

Yep. The younger generation would rather shell out $100/month to watch UFC on PPV.

On top of that, the product NASCAR is offering up right now sucks. It's better than baseball for me, but it still sucks. I used to go out of my way to try to watch NASCAR. Now, I find myself setting alarms and going out of the way to watch F1 and IndyCar and, if NASCAR's on, I'll watch it. Once football season starts, chances are slim I'll watch the races.

If RG3 and Cam play well and Manning coming back NASCAR will be in real trouble when football starts.

When the military takes care of all the needs of Vets, both past and present, then and only then should they spend money sponsoring a race car.

I completely agree with you SS but it will never happen. We need to protect our country and in order to do this we need new soldiers.

On a side note, I got so fed up with the local VA hospital that I no longer go there.

I wouldn't worry about the Redskins playing well, even with RG3. They still don't have an offensive line and they still don't have any wide receivers. They morgtaged the house to get RG3... Snyder spent the offseason reminding us all he's still in charge.

National Guard indicates NASCAR remains in its future.

The decision by the U.S. Army to leave NASCAR as a sponsor doesn't necessarily mean other branches of the military will follow suit including the National Guard.

The National Guard Association of the United States today released a statement by retired Maj. Gen. Gus L. Hargett Jr. , the association president that supports a continued presence in NASCAR as well as other sports and entertainment options:

I think it's possible that Betty McCollum is out to get even with congressman who won't go along with her plan to give away 2,382 acres of prime realestate owned by the federal government to build a new Vikings stadium in her district. She sure sounds like she supports the Vikings all the way.

My understanding is that the money that is used for these sponsorships is totally seperate from other Army programs/budgets. Meaning that this is not going to give our soldiers any more equipment, healthcare, or anything else they have well earned and deserve. So my question is after this is all said and done whose benefiting and where is the money going? If this decision means our soldiers are going to be better equipped, better benefitted or cared for I'm all for it.

The way to get new soldiers is to take care of the old ones! I'm with you on the VA hospital aka the snake pit here.

Ground pounder, the money comes out of the budget set aside for recruiting, same as the flyovers.

One going, one staying.

The Army National Guard will continue as a primary sponsor of the No. 88 Sprint Cup Series team and driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. after extending its relationship with Hendrick Motorsports through the 2013 NASCAR season. The National Guard will receive primary paint schemes in 20 Sprint Cup races, including the 2013 Daytona 500, and prominent brand placement during all non-primary events.
