V-8 Supercars Bathurst 1000

I am looking forward to it! Dave Despain had 5-time Bathurst Champion, Craig Lownde on Wind Tunnel last Sunday. It was quite interesting.

I am hoping to be in Austin for the American debut of V8 Supercars. I love that series. NASCAR should take notes...

I'll be watching. I just hope the camera work improves. They seem to use fixed cameras, so they end up cutting away during key battles, then jump back after the pass was made.

I like it, "stock" bodies are nice. But when a wreck happens, it's painful to watch. Those cars are built for speed. NOT for safety.

Its a long race...but I'm sure I'll be watching it live as always. Its apretty big day in NZ as well as Oz

If you guys can made the time to watch or DVR it...... do..... its good stuff.

For us here in Australia this is our Daytona (or insert another big race). Its an all weekend event with the main race on the Sunday.

The coverage should be very good... lots of incar, lots of fixed cameras around the track and either one or two ghetto birds in the sky.

With regards to safety .... they are plenty safe... it just looks like carnage when they wreck due to opening doors and so on.

During the day one of my favorite moments is when the cross to an in car.... no commentry no adds and no camera swapping....and you see and hear a complete lap..... this is just pure music. Also take note of the track distance 3.86 miles (see... I converted it for you guys), the elevation changes and the gear changes...... its tough work for a lap... let alone a day of it.

Hope that you enjoy.... I will be sitting in my chair hardly moving.... its a great day in.

All that, and you can actually tell one model from the other. I would like to see nascar go to the rear wing up near the rear window and lose the splitter and spolier. Go back to the old valance sitting under the car so it doesn't change the look so much.

V8 supercars are fun to watch. If we could just get the drivers to speak English. ;)

Thanks for the info. Time to set the DVR.

The body shapes are different however over the years they are getting closer and closer to loking like each other. however not the paridy that Nascar has.

Two make race...... Ford and Holden (Holden is Chevy for you guys). And the passion from fans for one of the other is very strong.

Just to try and set the scene and why its a big deal for us Aussies. This race is a round of our overall championship however many say that winning this race is better to have than the overall championship (this can be debated but I dont get into this). Some drivers have been coming to this track for years with no sucess and over the years there have been numerous times when a leader is bought to a standstill because of a 20c part.

The whole track is exciting however its across the top of the mountain that get sketchy, blind corners, massive drop aways and nearly zero run off (like a street circuit). Hope that you guys enjoy it...... Its one of my favorite races of the year.

Thanks Betsy. I will record this and watch it when I get home from the short track.

I have watched this race on TV before (never live however, and never the entire race) and it IS awesome!

Maybe some of you "locals" can give us some insight as to what to watch for and which drivers are most like Joonyer (most loved) and Kyle Busch (most hated)! It would be great to get some insight from y'all!

I'd believe it, I raced there in a video game (Toca Racing 3 I think) Its narrow tight and blind I can only imagine doing it for real where slamming head on into a wall is an issue:D

Hi All, Glad to hear you guys & gals are interested in our "main event" as much as we are.It sure is a great race.As far as drivers like Joonyer etc. it's mainly who drives a Ford or a Chevy (Holden). If a driver changes from a Ford to a Chev he gets a bit of flak for a while until he wins a couple, then he's a hero. The guys to watch this year IMO are the 2 Vodafone cars of Lowndes< Skaife, Whincup & Thompson in the Red corner & Richards & Winterbottom in the blue. The Holden factory drivers of Tander & Courtney will put up a good show as well. OK ,enjoy the race and I will leave the rest of the info for Leroy17 to tell you.
Cheers from Ozz

I like it, "stock" bodies are nice. But when a wreck happens, it's painful to watch. Those cars are built for speed. NOT for safety.

The V-8 Supercars are built differently from a NASCAR "Stock Car". NASCAR uses a frame with rollcage then basicly hangs fabricated body panels to it, the Supercars use a body shell then build a rollgage and supports in side it sort of unibody/monocogue design. Their very safe although I'd like to see them use more tethering devices to contain parts in accidents.

Safe compared to what? I saw guys on stretchers leaving those cars.

NO safer barrier. That probably has something to do with it.

But then again the time this year when Reutiman got hit twice at I think Watkins Glenn was very brutal. If that was a Supercar in that wreck and not a COT, I thinks the driver would be dead.

And who here remembers Denny stuffing it into the Pylon with no safer anything at Watkins Glenn. That was terrible. If that was a supercar, that guy would be dead. I wish I knew how to embed video. It was a monday race. Lots probably missed that race. Im no Denny fan, but when he hit that pole, I had this chilling feeling. Wanting to see him move his hands or something so bad. Watkins Glenn is a dangerous track. But then I look back on the 1961 F1 GP race (Italian GP) with a gleam of excitement in my eye like 14 people getting mowed down by Wolfgang VonTripps was something awesome.

I'm diluted, take me for what you want. :owquitit:

MoeJoe, I said Safe, their in NO WAY as safe as a Cup car and I did not mean to infer that they are! There as safe as most production based road racing cars such as the European Touring cars.
Racing and especially road racing is inherently DANGEROUS!

I dont remember the Denny accident

I clearly remember when 00 took out the pit wall sand barrels.

And the 6 car crash on the exit of the carosel.

DW Heads Down Under

Will he Say Boogity Boogity Boogity Down Under?

•DW heads to Australia: Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion and recent NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Darrell Waltrip headlines the SPEED broadcast team heading to Australia next month to cover the famed Bathurst 1000 from Mount Panorama in New South Wales, Australia on Oct. 8 at 7:00pm/et. Waltrip is joined by NASCAR on FOX boothmate Mike Joy and SPEED announcer Leigh Diffey, a native of Brisbane. Former racer Calvin Fish will work the pits on the 3.9-mile road course as racers compete for the Peter Brock Trophy.(SPEED)(10-5-2011)

I sure love my Holden...I mean Pontiac.

The 00 was caught up in the #6 incident exiting the carousel and took 2 big hits to the walls. The #11 hit so hard he compressed the safety tires and was stopped by the concrete base for the light pole outside the fence.

I assume he'll make some bad Australian pun, I just hope there is a Kangaroo version of Digger:beerbang:

Looking forward to the race.

I will watch live, if the wife doesn't complain to much, otherwise it is at least dvr Sunday morning.

I like the cars, haven't watch as much as I would like.
I like the stock appearance, I wished there was more press coverage here.

Some questions

-Do they race back to the yellow?
-Are there local cautions yellows for certain sectors only, or is it like Nascar full course only with a pace/safety car?
-Do they have lucky dogs/wave arounds.
-Are there many suspect phantom cautions?
-I assume no Green/White/Checkers.
-I assume a pit road speed limits exist.
-I know nothing is absolute but usually what is the catalyst or need for pitting? Or do they usually use up their tyres/tires or fuel and need to pit (maybe 50/50 or both just asking)
-Do a majority of pit stops happen during green flag runs, or during the caution laps?
-Are the cars rear wheel or front wheel drive.

-I assume no Green/White/Checkers. NO GWC

-I assume a pit road speed limits exist. Button limit

-I know nothing is absolute but usually what is the catalyst or need for pitting? Or do they usually use up their tyres/tires or fuel and need to pit (maybe 50/50 or both just asking) Bath is a driver change endurance race. Tires are critical with 11 inch wide tires on 3,300 lb cars.

-Do a majority of pit stops happen during green flag runs, or during the caution laps? Green.

-Are the cars rear wheel or front wheel drive. Rear wheel by rule.

Nice Lookin' GTO, Mate!

I was looking for an answer to a question I had about the transmission in the V8 Supercars (I knew that it was sequential but wasn't sure of 5 or 6 speeds) and I looked at this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_Supercars

It seems a pretty complete beginner's guide to the series. I know that I learned a few things...

Great, now I have to change my answers. 3,000 lb cars. I didn't realize it was just Ford and GM competing right now.

Pretty Cool but whats up with the 3 foot long shifter? I havent seen one like that since riding in Granpa's old Chevy pickup when I was a kid.

There are a few things to consider here. Firstly there is constant gear changes and you will note that the lever is level with the steering wheel for simple swap from wheel to shift. These are six speed boxes so with such short ratios there is a lot of changing going on.

Boxes are also sequential (no 'H' patern to move shifter up, down, left or right) just forward and back for up and down gears.

The shifter linkage mechanism and pivot points is so tight that even thought the shifter is long, the 'throw' is still short.

As far as drivers, I think OZZ sumed it up quite well. There are Holden (Chevy) teams and ford teams. Many will support a brand and then a chosen driver. There have been drivers who have switched teams and brands..... some fans take a bit of adjusting on this and some will always follow a driver.

OZZ confirmed who the 'liked' drivers are and there are a few disliked drivers as well however I dont see it as extreme as Nascar with Junior Nation and Kyle.

Another good thing in the race is that on occasions commentry can cross to a driver and talk during the race....... it gives a little different perspective and the drivers are generally a good bunch.

V-8 Supercars are not plagued with the issues that I read about with Nascar, phamtom cautions, and other matters that get people fired up.

In saying this, the racing field can get spread out and rarely will you ever get that "thunder road' experience of 40 cars nose to tail at full noise.

I feel fortunate enough to say that I have experienced both forms of racing (spectator) and I enjoy both...... full noise racing v-8's..... does it get any better than that.

Cheers mates.

Cheers mates.

Honestly, phantom yellows are a thing of the past. There were doing it a lot last year, but drivers started complaining and then the media jumped in and put an end to it. I can't remember a single example this year.

Thanks for clarifying... I only commented on what I have read.. not what I had noticed.

Anyway..... I am a big fan of Nascar over in this part of the world and gradually getting mates hooked as well.

Cheers.
