F1 vs. NASCAR in Texas? No contest, Foyt says

This weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix at Austin's Circuit of The Americas will provide a rare opportunity for the two racing goliaths to be compared head to head for live attendance and TV audience.

TMS president and general manager Eddie Gossage has made no secret of his frustration at F1's scheduling its American race opposite his Cup event. "I absolutely think it's foolish," Gossage said back in February. "It's a shot fired by Formula 1 at NASCAR. I can't say I was surprised because (F1 chief executive) Bernie Ecclestone does a lot of foolish things. The thing he unfortunately doesn't recognize is there is an 800-pound gorilla when it comes to major American motorsports. The 800-pound gorilla is NASCAR."

NASCAR will get a chance to prove that this Sunday, when NASCAR's AAA Texas 500 and F1's USGP both go green simultaneously at 3 p.m. ET, with the Cup race on ESPN and the grand prix on NBC.

"Super Tex" A.J. Foyt left no doubts which race he'll be watching.

"You got Formula 1, that I never did ever see go very big in the United States, and Eddie Gossage does a great job promoting the (TMS) race," Foyt (LEFT) told FOXsports.com.

"I have nothing against Formula 1, don't get me wrong, but I think the NASCAR race would be a better race to go see than the Formula 1," opined Foyt, a few months shy of his 80th birthday, who remains the only driver to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "I could be wrong. But I really think it could be a lot better race.

"I really don't know much about Formula 1, so I'd be talking out of turn saying one thing or another. I know it's a very strong operation. It's been around for many years. Still, it's not like the Indy 500, or a good high-bank race in Texas with Indy cars. I've always loved Indy cars.

"I had a chance a couple times to drive Formula 1. I never was that much interested because I never cared to wear a necktie each time I went to eat breakfast. I'm a Texas boy and I just loved racing in the Indy cars and sprint cars."

I love this quote.

F1 in its entirety followed by the second half of Cup. F1 will be over by 5 PM Eastern at the latest.

Nascar first this year, the F-1 cars sound like lawn mowers and I dont like Hamilton

No contest, Nascar will be a much better attended and watched event.

Plus like a couple of others here, I did not know F1 was racing in Texas this weekend until I saw it here. Plus it is in Austin, the most liberal city in Texas.

The only good point in a F1 race is the race to the first turn on the green flag, uh I mean, the redlights go out. Other than that it is line racing with an occasional team order for one team driver to move over for the other. That along with the fact this season the F1 cars sound like SH*T!

Ok so I just watched as much of F1 race in going to watch. The start and by turn 3 they looked like string of spaghetti. Bring on the cup boys.

F1 will do better with at-track attendance, NASCAR will do better on TV.

I am watching the cup race live.

DVR on for both. I will probably watch the F1 event tonight.

More people at the F1 race :(

Sucks that NASCAR is dying.

I'm not surprised at all. One US F1 race each year, which is why Gossage is pissed. I don't blame him. F1 clearly decided to split the racing fan base this weekend, but I'm not sure why. Could have been a TV network request.

Takes me about 30 minutes to watch all the exciting parts in a typical F1 race, and I don't care if I know who won.

COTA is bunched with Brazil (Mexico as well, next year) on the schedule for travel reasons and they also try to avoid weekends with Longhorns football games in Austin so there's not much flexibility.

Amazing drive by Danica leading all but the first laps, with only five more laps to go.

Big advantage of watching F1 over Nascar today: there are far less ads for idiot politicians polluting the show and hindering my enjoyment of it. I've had both races on split screen, and lots of the ESPN breaks have been wall to wall political ads. Unusual, considering F1 is on a local affiliate today and ESPN is national.

LOL F1!, no thanks

Bad as the mile and a half was the F-1 was worse, never seen a race at COTA that was fit to watch

For the sake of people interested in both... Please, no spoilers in either race thread!
Without watching I'll spoil first and second by saying they were occupied by Mercedes drivers.

Eff One!

Formula One gets a yearly ratings boost in the US, but NASCAR is still king.

USGP viewership up, but Texas NASCAR race still smashes in American markets

Formula One got a small ratings boost in the U.S. for the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday, while NASCAR saw its viewership at Texas drop from a year ago.
However, the numbers show that NASCAR is still king in the U.S.
In 2013, NBC Sports reported that the USGP received a rating of 0.65 (about 1.010 million viewers). This year in Austin, NBC Sports said the race got a 0.7 overnight rating.

NASCAR, on the other hand, saw last year’s fall Texas race come in with a 2.6 rating (about 4.179 million viewers). This year, the race registered just a 2.5 rating.
The numbers show that even when NASCAR suffers a downtick in viewers, it still obliterates Formula One on TV.

Pretty impressive increase for NASCAR this week, especially considering it was on against the F1 race and one of the marquee matchups of the NFL season (Patriots vs. Broncos).
