Watkins Glen prez not happy

West Coaster here want 9am pst starts
that means race over by 1pm
still got all afternoon to do stuff

Exactly. A 12 noon start time absolutely decimates my Sunday.

I lived out there in Californification for 6 years ^^^^^^^ This is true and I knew quite a few race fans that would agree. :booya:

Yup. Kind of used to it.

I lived in Montana (Mountain Time) for 3 years and never had an easy with the earlier starts. During the winter I loved the fact college basketball games started at 5 PM. Maybe the dark cold nights more tolerable.

This sport was built on the live experience. Once everyone puts a premium on that again everything will take care of itself. NASCAR has to figure out a way to limit how much power TV has. I would love to see a more expanded TV package again to allow more voices at the table.

Nascar is delivering an old audience and a smaller number of viewers each year to FOX and NBC so they are dealing from a position of weakness and must throw the networks more than the odd bone.

As long as they receive more money from broadcast and streaming content rights, those income sources will continue to call the shots, the same as in almost all other sports. I don't see any way to limit that, or any reason NASCAR (or any other sport) would turn away from its primary income source.

TV paid $8.4 Billion for a product with declining viewers. Did anyone think they won't be demanding changes to try to protect their investment? I wonder how many other recent changes are the result of the networks behind the scenes.

I don't think TV is demanding anything. I'm sure they are working together to produce the best product they can. Besides comparing to what the networks have locked in on the price they are paying, it isn't out of line with comparable programming. Not to mention the cable revenue they earn from the broadcasts. I noticed a slew of different sponsors watching the Glenn race and some were the same but with different spots. The only people I have heard complaining about the price are some on here...daily

I wish NASCAR would have consistent start times like every other professional sport. I happen to check here every week for the NASCAR schedule, I doubt a casual fan knows when a race starts.

I'm facing the same situation Sunday if I make it up to MIS like I want... if all as scheduled I walk out of the grandstands close to 7pm then would come my drive for a few hours all at night now.

The networks have ruined this sport. First for underscoring the amount of fans without access to these unique channels, even if they have cable... now with boxing the fan who attends races into a corner where they leave the track so late...

Yeah, it's not like the good ol' days when all viewers could enjoy a two-week old race edited to fit in Wide World's 90 minute broadcast (with cut aways to cliff diving).

Those were some good days with a little ski jumping and weight lifting thrown in for good measure. If not for WWoS I would have never known about the power snatch, muscle snatch or squat snatch let alone the clean and jerk.

I remember the good old days when we used to attend college football games with little planning. Now we have Thursday night games, making it a challenge for Friday work days and late night Saturday games. We gave up a few years ago and just get tickets to games we can attend.I still can't believe I saw the start of the Indy race, visited friends, went out to dinner with wife and made it home to watch the end of the race.Network sports programming have effected all sports.

Who remembers this from a few years ago regarding more consistent starting times?

This was from a 201 interview with Brian France. 28 of the events for next year will be in the 1:00 o'clock hour. We'll start at 1:00 o'clock, which is ... so between consistency and earlier start times, we think we know that we're delivering what our core fan has been telling us for a while.

Is that the same Brian France who implemented a simpler points system so the fans could understand it?

Today, it wasn't so bad, just because today I got roped into helping some extended family empty out a storage locker, and it took from 10:30 to 1:30, which with the 3pm start left me with plenty of time to get lunch, get back to my pad, re-dry all my shirts and review my Fantasy Roster.

That said, my preference is for earlier start times, because if I can't get my yardwork done on Saturday (which was the case this weekend due to a series of downpours), I usually won't wake up early enough on Sunday knowing the race starts later, which means the work is unlikely to get done (and as fast as my grass grows, I need to cut it every week, not to mention I'm working a couple long-term "projects" in the bushes out front). Besides that, the earlier start time just means I'm listening to the radio instead of watching the TV if a situation like the above occurs, alongside my inability to live-tweet the race (since my phone's ancient, and doesn't connect to Twitter in a satisfactory manner). Neither of those are deal-breakers, although again it was OK on this particular weekend.
