Yesterday, I prepped for my first colonoscopy and gawd, that was awful. To those who've done it before, you know what I mean. To those who haven't had this procedure done, one day you will. Anyway, the wife took me to the clinic just after one this afternoon and I went right in and got ready. From everything that I've heard, I was ready to sleep through the whole thing and wake up a bit drowsy. Well, not I, says I! I asked the assitant if I could just fall asleep and she said sure, if you would like. But I was facing the monitor and though I never felt anything going into my body, I began to see what the scope was seeing and that looked interesting. I even shot the bull with the doc and his assistant while they were working. Didn't take very long and they removed 7 pollups in all, none of them looked bad. I was then taken to the recovery room and they removed the IV tube and took my blood presure. I was never groggy and was ready to leave right away, but I had to wait for the doc to come and talk to us. He told me that nothing looked bad, but because I had seven pollups, I need to do this again next year. :( The wife had five but she doesn't have to go back for five years. Since I had seven, shouldn't that mean I could wait for seven years? :) Anyway, I'm glad that I had that done and now I only have one more test to go on Wednesday. This is the one that I am more interested in because it is with a pulmonologist and he will be looking at a couple of spots on my lungs. Very small and I don't have any breathing problems, but my personal doctor wants to find out what this is now so that if it is something, they can get to work on it quickly.

I was only joking a month ago when I said well, I'm going to have that damned tube check out my bladder, and then turn over and check the other side. Now all I need is for them to put a tube down my throat. That just might be the case. I guess I'll never forget the month of August 2007.

As soon as I find a report on Wednesday's tests, I'll pass it along.

Glad to hear you made it through, buck. MrTRL said the worst part of the exam was the 24 hours before the scope. :D

Sounds like you're going to have every inch of your insides examined.

I hope everything is clear, Buckster. Glad to hear all went well today.

Glad that you are having the tests Buckaroo. I have had the same test many times, at least six and probably more. My last Colonoscopy I had the opposite reaction from you, they had a hard time waking me up afterwards.

Yeah, today was a breeze and all I'm hoping for is the same for Wednesday. Keep fingers crossed.

Howdy Buckaroo

Perhaps I am a bit more cautious than most...but I think I would elect to have that damn tube put down my throat FIRST! Then those other places..
Betsy:rolleyes:

Not a bad idea Betsy, but those other things were scheduled well before the issue with my lungs. But so be it for now. Tomorrow will be the telling tale for now.

I hope all is well.

And yes, the worst part is the prep. Having to take all those laxatives and Fleet is the worst tasting stuff Ive ever had!

Stay close to a bathroom during the prep.

Well professur

Most if not all of have had those feelings... But when it comes right down to it.. if suspicion of our demise is prevalent.. we all submit to whatever intervention may be at hand.
Sitting comfortably in our chair with a bowl of ice cream in our lap, we may SAY anything... But when push comes to shove.. we nod our head, grit our teeth, and submit to the very worst things our minds can imagine..
Betsy

I think we need to explain a few things as many of you sound like you think a Colonoscopy is the "pits". In fact, having a Colonoscopy is not that bad and is well worth having done to "catch" colon cancer before it becomes too late. I don't know what type Polyps Buckaroo had but frequently the polyps are what they call pre-cancerous. If not removed early they become Cancer and then things get really tough. I am glad that buckaroo had the Colonoscopy and got the polyps removed.

Amen, muggle. MrTRL's polyps were benign, thank goodness.

Clarification. Polyps can be "Benign" but they may still be of the pre-cancerous type. The important thing is to have them removed before they become cancerous. Also glad that your other half had them removed.

i went through it 12yrs ago.i know where u r coming from.bet u r glad its over.will say some prayers for u.

I had mine 6 years ago. I am a year overdue so I plan on having another one before the year is out.

When I had mine, they found and removed a couple of polyps. As someone else has said, the prep was worse than the procedure.

When I had mine, they put me out completly. Never did see or hear a thing. But the anesthtic they used was very strong and it took awhile for me to come back out of it. And the worse part of that is my wife said that I was very talkative during the time of my recovery. I asked her what I said and she told me that I didn't want to know.

Yikes! I think I will have a friend take me next time. lol

I know there were some people that were crying or shouting when they were coming to. I would love to know what I was doing and saying but then again, maybe some things are just better off left unknown.

Buck, I am glad you had your's done and that everything was ok.

Really, I didn't mind the procedure at all and I was totally alert and watch the monitor the entire time. I would guess that it would depend on the doctor that is doing the procedure as to how far out they put you. I've not yet talked to anyone that was alert as I was when they had their's done, not even the wife.

I'll take that anytime compared to the cystoscopy that I had done a week ago. If you don't know what that is, it's the examination of the urinary tract and the bladder. Nuff said!

Now tomorrow, I am going to see the pulmonologist and he's going to look at my lungs. We're hoping that he'll find nothing, but he may have to do a biopsy on a spot on my right center lobe. They can do this in a couple of ways and a new way called a PET scan, which is something that I know nothing about, it's rather new. Anyway, when I find out anything, I'll let y'all know.

Are you sure that was a scope...maybe the doc was just well endowed...

The wife has to have both every year. She's a polyp producing machine.
After I have the 1st one, no not scheduled yet, the doc said if he doesn't find anything unusual I can then start swallowing the tv camera that takes pics all the way thru. It takes up to 8 hours to pass the thing but there's no uncomfortableness.

I have had a couple of lung biopsies. One they did a broncostomy (spelling?)which was on the inside of the lungs. You are awake all the time they put a camera down in your lungs and look around and you cough and sputter the whole time. Had that twice. Then had a open lung biopsy. I was out then and they went between my ribs and actually took a piece of my lungs.

I had a colonoscopy done about 10 years ago and the prep was unbelievably brutal. I consider myself a fairly tough man, but that was just unreal. That was when you had to drink a gallon of some crap that was fruit flavored. The taste wasn't too bad, but the consistency was just nasty. And what it made you do was even worse. Fortunately they found no cancer on that end. I had another one done a few years later and the prep was much better. I only had to drink a small bottle of nasty stuff and of course line in the bathroom for the rest of the night. They did find a pre-cancerous condition when they did the stomach scope, but it was cured by the time they rechecked a year later. I had a buddy tell me that he found the tape of my colonoscopy on the internet, but he was just kidding around.

I am glad to hear everything is checking out ok. I hope the symptoms that are causing you to have these tests improve also. ;)

Okay, saw the pulmonologist this afternoon and after giving me many questions and having me do a breathing test, all of that was okay. But he showed me the spot from the CT scan and said that we have to find out what it is. He went through all the usual talk about how it could be benign or not, but that they have to find out first. So he set me up for a PET scan. A PET scan is when they inject a certain sugar water into my body and they let it work. Cancerous cells will eat or consume the sugar water much faster than non-cancerous cells and that is how they can see if something "might" be cancerous. If they see bright spots in the area they are looking, there is an 85% chance that it's cancerous. If not, then the chances are even more, like 90% and higher that it isn't cancerous. This test takes several hours and I have to be ready for a boring test he told me. :) I will get this test next Wednesday and then he will give me the results the following Thursday.

I'm sure my boss just can't wait til he hears me tell him that I've got two more appointments that I need off. :) But he knows what is going on and is a very good boss. BTW, Derrick used to work for RJR Sports Marketing and traveled to all the races and knows all the wheels in the sport. Once RJR got out of the sport, he had to find new work and so now he supervises mailmen.

So he set me up for a PET scan.

I just hope MVick doesn't find out. You know what he does to pets.

And, I've never understood breathing tests. I mean you did walk into his office. Did he think you weren't breathing?

Reminds me of the time when I was in the Mall and passed by the Hearing Aid store. They had this huge sign in the window for a "Free Hearing Test". There were 2 women at the counter talking to the clerk so I opened the door and said "Hello". They all turned to look, I said "OK, you passed". Somehow I don't think they appreciated me giving them the free test. I just can't figure out some people. That and the peeps with me acted all embarrassed and everything...

And, before you ask, yes that's a true story. :)

Hey Buck! Glad to hear the first test went well. Hope the PET scan goes well also. You take care of yourself okay! BTW, it's been awhile you do remember me, right? :p

Deedee, you've got to be kidding...right? Of course I know who you are. I can stil hear your voice even though it's been such a long time since we've talked on the phone. :)

Forget about me, how've you been doing? Been a while since we've heard from you. I'm sure your are in mourning that the Buckeyes aren't top dogs in the polls these days, but hey, you can't win them all. :)

You take care now!

Actually I am doing really well considering my town was declared a disaster this week because of flooding. The worse since 1913. But Tay and I are fine.

THE Ohio State Buckeyes will be just fine this year, just watch and see. ;)

How is your wife doing?

Take care and I promise not to be a stranger!

The wife is fine and I tell her that she's a trophy wife now. :)

Glad that you and Tay are doing well, even if you have to swim now and then. Jeez, my father down in Oklahoma has the same problem as you and we are in now an extreme drought. Can't you guys share a bit? ;)

Thanks kelloggs. When this all started, over a month ago, I was naturally a bit surprised and scared. The worst part is just imagining what it all could be. But I've had plenty of time now to think about it all and I'm not very worried about it now. Yes, in a couple of weeks I could find out that I've got lung cancer, but I just don't think that will be the case. I've not got shortness of breath, nor do I cough and I don't spit up blood. I don't have any pains that age won't explain and it's been years since I've had a chest x-ray. Had I had one a few years ago, all of this now might not even be needed because they would have been able to see that this spot has been there for some time. BUT, such isn't the case and that's why we need to get to the bottom of it all so that we will know the next time I have one of these pictures taken.

It's funny how something like this can come to light with a normal physical done yearly. One thing led to another and I am greatful that IF this tumor (?) is indeed malignant, it's so early that it should be easily taken care of. For all of you out there, please try and get a yearly physical. It could save your life.

Again, I want to thank you all for your kind thoughts and continued prayers. It's still a couple of weeks before I will know anything on this one issue, but just know that I'll keep y'all notified of the results of the tests. Thanks.

CB

CB, I have faith that you will be fine, and you are just stubborn enough to prove me right! Continued thoughts and prayers.

Glad that things so far are all good. I'm sure that the PET scan will turn out just the same, and IF it doesn't you'll handle it just fine. You are certainly in my thoughts and prayers. ;)

Hope all goes well, Buck. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Okay, had my PET scan today and though it wasn't painful in anyway, it did take some time and was uncomfortable at times. Here's what they did. I was taken into a room with a recliner and after having some saline and something that was shielded with metal injected into my blood stream, I was left to watch TV or whatever for about an hour. I suppose that was so the stuff they injected into me would have time to work. Then I was taken into the CT/PET scan room and took my place on the table. They first took a couple of CT scans and then the PET scan commenced. I had to hold my arms over my head and that became very uncomfortable after a while. This scan took almost 30 minutes with the scanner doing it's thing in sections about every five minutes. At one point during the scan, I was moving my arms because of the lights that were shining in my eyes and that they were getting really sore. Little miss scanmiester came in and said to me..."Mr Thompson, you are to try and keep still and not move your arms. I understand that they might be getting tired, but we are almost done." I almost gave her the finger, but instead said "yes maam", and held my arms still. Gawd, my nose itched from then on! But she was right, within five minutes, the scan was over and she said that I was free to go. Damn, that sounded more like a jailer telling me that I was a free man.

I won't know the results of the scan a week from tomorrow but I'll be sure and give a full report when I find out what they found.

Next on my schedule is the NASCAR Whelen Modified race at Martinsville this Saturday. That day is supposed to be my holiday because Monday is my scheduled day off, but I've been told that I am now scheduled to work that day. Excuse me while I say "chit, chit, chit". And we've got reservations at a hotel up there in Virginia. Well, I'll be getting up early Saturday morning and zipping down to Winston for work, and then once I've finished my rounds, I'll be zipping back up there to join the crowd.

Now for a few days of rest..........

Okay folks, good news from the doctor. He said that nothing "lit" up and as such, there's a 90% chance a the spot being benign. But there's that small chance that it's otherwise and he told me that there were two avenues to take. One, they would opperate and take the tumor out, or two, they could monitor it and watch for growth. No brainer for me. I will be scanned every three months for a year and than yearly to see if this thing grows. If it does, then they take the knife to me, but otherwise, things are normal. :D

I'm buying, anyone wanna beer? How about the good stuff. Hell, I'm good for it for now anyway. :beerbang:
