Yep, that sounds like Grand Forks. Coldest place on earth!!! We're not exactly the Bahamas here in Bismarck. But it is usually colder in GF.
The big snows and flooding I was refering to happened in the late 90's (96-97).
Where the heck did you ski in GF? On the interstate off ramps? There isn't hill one out there in eastern ND. That is the flattest piece of ground around. That's why the wind chills are so high there.

Out west of the base is a state park, Turtle Creek where there are canyons, rather than hills. They aren't very long runs, but it's a place where you could learn to ski. Most of the time we either headed off to Minnesota or up to Canada to ski. Man, it's been a long time since I skiied. Loved it and wished that I had stayed with it, but that's life in the big city. We have some real decent resorts not far from me here in NC believe it or not. The highest peak east of the Mississippi River is right here in NC. The runs are open as we speak and people are having fun.
I was totally surprised when I found out that there is a lot of ski resorts in NC. I just didn't picture NC as having enough snow or cold to be able to ski.
Ours up here in the Dakotas are not even close to opening. No snow yet. There is Terry Peak in SD (Black Hills) that just got a foot last night and they have been making some. Sounds like they will open at least partially in early Dec. I hope they get a bunch of snow by Christmas. We have a cabin reserved down there over Christmas. Right next to one of the ski resorts.
We did this last year too. I tried to snowboard for the first time. YIKES!!!! That was bad. I fell about 150 times. Ended up with both my wrists sprained. And that was the first day. I couldn't even ski after that. I'm staying off the snowboards this year.
My days with the cold and snow are over. Yeah, I still love snow, but I'll watch Where Eagles Dare for my fix when I need it. The Mrs and I now head for the warm waters of the ocean where we prefer that. Anywhere in the Caribbean will suit us. Seems that every other year, we head down that way. Been to Cancun and the Mayan Riviera and took a cruise to San Juan, Tortola BVI and St. Thomas, USVI. We hit our own beach on the Atlantic on those off years. Just can't beat the sand, surf and sun.
