What does everybody do for a living?

I used to actually work for a living...(20 years military)...I finally got smart and got a (civilian) government job. Now I still actually work, and my skills are still important, but it's a lot easier than being out on 6 month deployments to the North Atlantic/Med...

I also raise tomatoes for my next door neighbor (who is a WWII guy..aging) and I feed cats. I spend money on my kids (22-26 years old) who do not have to do what I had to do when I was young - but that's OK - you always want better for your kids.

P.S. - the thing is - sometimes - the idea that you "always want better for your kids" gets muddled as one gets older and the "kids" actually get a little lazy because they do have it better. So you have done your job...made a better (easier) life for your kids...but you want them to somehow have the work ethic that you did.

Well...Duh...if you wanted them to have that work ethic that you had you shouldn't have made it easy for them in the first place.

It's like with my cat...I feed her and we are "friends"...but I don't actually expect her to go out and catch mouses

9 years working at a stamping plant, then 33 years at the County Highway Dept. Now retired, with a fulltime part-time job. Went from 5 8hr days to 7 12hr days. I know....dumb right? Have been given the rest of the year off.

Seasonal UPS driver helper while looking for my next full time position.

I'm retired. B)
Was once a computer Systems Analyst. Today my knowledge is way out of date and I'm happy with that. :)

Retired Electrical Contractor, then to keep myself occupied I became a snow plow operator and was eventually forced to quit because of my lungs. Now I just volunteer to help the elderly or even young ones who need transportation for medical treatments and some who can't use public transportation. My wife is a cancer survivor so I think my main job is to see to her needs.

Retired Toyota Master Tech. Now I take care of my 90 year old mom and my wife, who's nursing a blood clot, so my job title now would be, Gopher.
I Go Pher This
and I Go Pher That :D

As an update I just started a great new job last week. It's fund raising by phone. It's considered telemarketing, but I never sell a thing. I raise money for various charities and non-profit organizations. I love that my sales and communication skills are finally being used to raise funds for causes I believe in. It also pays really well for a "telemarketing" job. It's a $4 an hour raise from the last job I had, plus it's full time (four, 10 hour days every week) and the chance to make quite a bit more in bonuses that seem pretty reasonably attainable based on my early results.

Great avatar, by the way :jamming:

Been in the automotive repair biz for 34+ years … done everything from mounting tires to managing shops … being in management burned me out with 12 hour days so I retreated 20 years ago back into the shop to turn wrenches …

I found a shop that treats me very well goodyear coast tire. I have learned that a good shop that treats me along with my girlfriend well is rare. Why do women get treated badly in shops?

That's very cool job

Thanks! I love it because I love taking care of animals. However, the bull**** I'm having to put up with in recent times is making me question whether or not I should look for a more....low key job.

That is cool. My wife wants to get into that one day.
We spend and arm and a leg to have our dogs cared for!

Oh gods, I think the first and best advice I can give to anyone wanting to start their own business is this. When you become a business owner, days off are completely optional and will become a rarity. You may want to hang out with friends, go to the park with your husband or wife, or just have a day where you can do nothing. HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA, yea, say goodbye to those days.

I spent an awful long time in the auto repair business myself. I managed Firestone Tire, was a service manager and tire sales manager at Firestone and Goodyear stores as well. I managed Auto Zones for 6 years and sold auto parts, supplies and equipment strictly wholesale for 3 years as well. My back finally gave out so I had to radically switch course in my career several years ago.

Thanks. Joe Bonamassa is my favorite living guitarist and a pretty close second to my all-time favorite musician of any kind, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Joe is great and one of my favorites as well. Early Eric Clapton will always be my all time favorite, the Bluesbreaker years and the Cream years. Second would be Johnny Winter.

Joe says Cream era Clapton was his first and biggest influence.

Yep, I heard him in an interview say his biggest influences were the British Blues rockers. He just liked the way they did it better. I was the same way.

Hi, I'm a newbie here :punkrocke

I started in the paint trade in Jan 1988 and since then I've painted cars, passenger trucks, highway tractors, bi-level rail cars, concrete mixers, the JFK Air Train, helicopters, locomotives and about anything else you can name.

I guess you can say I know my way around a spray gun.

It happens … blame it on unscrupulous owners, managers and mechanics who take advantage on the unknowing and don't believe for a minute that just women are treated poorly …

I've worked for 2 companies and can say for the most part we have done everything to make sure our customers are all treated fairly … repeat and happy customers are the most important part of our business …

For the last 20 I have been a suspension and alignment tech and my shoulders and elbows are about worn out … I feel for you with the back as that has been the latest issue I have been dealing with …
