What happens if there's a tie for 10th @ the conclusion of Richmond?

I heard on Dave Moody's Sirius NASCAR Radio's show yesterday that if there is a tie for 10th that both drivers would make the Chase and there would only be one wildcard spot. No tie breaker. Anyone know if this is true?

Sounds reasonable considering that they don't limit the Chase to 10 drivers.

Why not give one of the wild card spots to a driver that "earned" a spot based on points ?

I'm sure that one of the resident research specialists can find the answer in one of the numerous nooks and crannies at Jayski.

I've always understood ties to be broken by wins, 2nd's, 3rd's, etc..... I was surprised to hear this yesterday. I've asked several 'media types' and a few different 'radio hosts' this question but I've not gotten a definitive answer yet.

This is easily a possibility this weekend with how close the points are.

That means that if two drivers tie for ninth and two drivers tie for tenth they all make the chase and there is no wildcard spot.

I don't think this would ever happen. If 2 drivers do tie for the 11th spot, obviously they would both be THE wildcards. If it's 12th we're talking about, I find it hard to imagine all 40 something tie breakers would be the same for both.

ouch, brain freeze is starting to kick in . . .

I always felt that WC spots should go to EVERY driver within 15 points of 10th after Richmond, and they should keep their win bonus, but that's just my opinion.

interesting. so nascar is saying if you finish 10th in points even if tied you have earned a chase spot. what if a 4 way tie? 13 chase drivers?

Taking it a step further, what happens if there's a three-way tie for 10th place ?

No wildcard what-so-ever ?

And in the rare event that there's a four-way tie I can imagine Brian France crawling into a hole somewhere.

Gee, I hope we work this out and avert disaster!;)

This is getting pretty silly. There won't be any tie for 10th. Which 2 drivers have a chance of finishing tied for points and a season of finishing positions? I suspect the answer is ZERO.

Upon futher review, I'm thinking that if two drivers tie for ninth, the driver with the next most points is considered to be in 11th, not 10th.

If so, then there's no way for a ninth place tie and a tenth place tie.

then again, who knows . . .

How about 33 wildcard spots and no reset of the points?

How about consistency? Since the championship is decided on JUST points, why decide which 2 can compete for that championship by how many wins they have? They already got bonus points for those wins. Then, once they are awarded a WC spot, instantly decide their wins don't count in the chase.

It's a retarded system.

Damn DP, this one is a gooden to gettem going on a Wednesday.

Hey, what if 12 drivers tie for first? Does that mean there will ONLY be 2 drivers in the chase, and as wildcards?

I'm confused enough without you guys "FIXIN" Posts.

I've got a response from a couple different hosts on NASCAR Radio. Each being different. One says that there is no tie and the second wildcard would get bumped. The other said that they do the # of 1st's, 2nd's and so on down the line. Both said they will check with NASCAR.

What would be interesting is if one of those tied for 10th is Kurt or Dale Jr. Without a win, they'd drop off the board completely.

How about this one....

The driver in 12th has zero wins, but is 150 points ahead of the driver 2 points to the good in 20th, who has 1 rain delay win. NASCAR says that win is worth more than 150 points, so the driver in 12th is out and the driver in 20th is in. Then nascar tells the new driver in 12th that his rain delay win doesn't mean sheet and takes the 3 bonus points away. If they had done that a moment sooner, the original 12th place driver would be in the chase.

My head hurts now. Where's my Goody's Headache Powder?

Speaking of tie-breakers, I'm still disappointed that NASCAR didn't do something more imaginative in 2011 when Stewart and Edwards were tied for the SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP.

How 'bout borrowing a page from the PGA and have the two drivers that tied go another "18-holes" to settle the matter.

That's it. 10 MORE RACES! 10 MORE RACES! Everyone.

I bet Truex would probably be pretty steamed if, for example, Gordon and KuBu tie for 10th in points with no wins, both get in the Chase as a result, and Kahne gets the remaining WC.
