What's most interesting about NASCAR?

I gotta say it's the unknown and underrated great working relationship that the competitors have with the governing body . As much as the fans want to think that it is an adversarial relationship , it is in fact , the opposite . Just a couple examples , Nascar's top officials Gary Nelson and Robin Pemberton are ex crew chiefs and still have close ties in the garage area. Dale Earnhardt Sr. may have been a Nascar bad boy , but one of his closest buds was Nascar Director Mike Helton . From the very inception , Nascar was founded by and run by racers not business people , and for the most part, it is still that way today.

Sounds as though Nascar would make a great Federal Government.Down here anyway.
 
Something that I didn't think to mention in my first post is how the cars are made to handle contact with other cars while racing, especially at the smaller tracks. If two open wheel cars make contact, it's not pretty and the cars are usually wrecked. If two NASCAR race cars make contact, typically it's a battle for position and the cars continue racing (Although sometimes they do wreck).

Another aspect is that the drivers live with each during race weekends (there is an RV park for them and their families), they become friends, and help new drivers. When Montoya started NASCAR he was surprised at how helpful other drivers were. He commented on how different the racing environment is compared to F1.

This is probably one of the worst things that's happened over the years. They don't need to be friends. They need to be competitors.

I think that fellow competitors in all sports can have respect for each other and still be fierce competitors. I see football players , soccer players ,baseball players , etc . on the field after the game shaking hands ,probably going for a beer . To be a fierce competitor ,you don't have to hate your fellow competitors . You just have to want to win. Oh , and back in the day , they didn't stay in the same motorcoach lot but they did stay in the same motel. And they did attend the same church services . I can't believe that you think that Jeff Gordon would cut Greg Biffle a break because they are parked next to each other .:confused:
 
Rusty, please do not use today's pathetic Daytona 500 as a gauge of how exciting NASCAR is. :eek: Wait until Phoenix next weekend. NASCAR hasn't been able to get the racing at restrictor plate tracks right in the past 3 years, and today was worse than normal. But restrictor plate races like today are only 4 of 36 races a year. All of the other races except maybe the three other restrictor plate tracks this year will be better than the single-file train we saw today.
