Hi guys,

I am writting to you all from here in Sunny and hot Australia.

I am planning to come to the US for a short vacation this year and the times will coincide with either a race in Texas (April) or Dega (May).

I have been to a few races in the past (Daytona, Vegas, Phoenix) so I am looking for your suggestions on which would be a better race and experience to go to.

Dont get me wrong..... I know that I will love either..... but I would like to hear you comments.

Cheers.

I'm biased of course, but Texas has better racing --- much faster, definitely more exciting. Much better management, too. Eddie Gossage
learned his craft from Humpy Wheeler and runs a wonderful operation.
But, Dega --- oh, wow. The downside, the traffic, the inability to see the far side of the track.

And happy to have you visit -- no matter which race you attend.
And I have attended races at both venues.

Dega, far mor exciting then Texas will ever be

Why are you guys talking about Vegas? That's in March. There's always Richmond in the same time frame, but Talladega races seem to have more excitement than Texas.

Well thanks for the replies and I appreciate your comments however I am limited to only those two races. Timings and location is where my restriction are..... we are also looking to catch other things as well and there is MLB at Texas a few days earlier as well.

Keep you comments comming and I appreciate this.

Cheers mates!

I have never been to Dega but I have attended many races at TMS.

Seeing as how I loathe restrictor plate races, I would certainly recommend Texas! The transition from the front stretch into Turn One is not done justice by TV. It is a spectacular venue.

Just remember, Denton County is a Dry County (no beer sales at the track) so plan accordingly! You can carry in anything you want, however, as long as it is not in a glass container!

If those are your only choices then I vote Talladega. If I had to choose between the two that's where I'd go.

You said that you had been to Daytona so you have witnessed the spectacle of the super speedway race. Therefore Texas is the obvious choice.I also agree with the others that unique races like Martinsville , Bristol,Richmond and Darlington are ones to keep on your wish list.

Even though I'm a Huge Daytona, Talledega fan you've seen that, I'd go to Texas! Great race facility, good veiws from the stands and they Do Haul Butt there!

His options are Texas and Talledega! Why are yall throwing in all these other tracks?

Only on TV. I didn't like Daytona because you CANNOT see the backstretch action.

Andy and FB are right. GOTO richmond or Martinsville

Because we have an opinion that we believe is helpful if herd.

But its not because they don't fall in the time period he is here so really your just being a hindrance

This is great feedback and thanks heaps.

There are many tracks on my list that I want to see, we always have to plan around 'other' things to make the most of trips and its proberly leaning towards Texas.

Martinsville, Bristol and Darlington are high on the list and will have to wait till next time. If ever I get enough coin together (lottery win) I want to follow a season, every race, every track...... cant see that happening so I work away at track by track at this stage.

Another question and you dont have to answer if you dont want to, what things are a 'must do' when around texas (Dallas) area. We have been to San Antonio before and remember the 'Leave you gun in your car' signs at the Applebees door...... this is just stuff that we dont have in Australia.

Cheers mates.

Richmond does, which is why I suggested it as an alternative to Talladega. It's the week before and JUST a few hundred miles north.

The infield at TMS is CRAZY on Saturday Night! It's like a mini Mardi Gras with "beads" and all! ;)

Things to do in Dallas/Ft. Worth ----- Billy Bob's, Sundance Square, Great Wolf Lodge, Gaylord Texan
mike honcho and majestyx live closer and can probably help. Drop them a message.

If your a fisherman and have the time Lake Fork is about an hour west of Dallas GREAT Large Mouth Bass fishing and Lake Ray Hubbard is 1/2 east of Dallas awesome Striped Bass fishing! I hit one or the other everytime I get out there.
Yall don't have LM Bass or Stripers down there do you? You have Bream?

Its no worries guys, have real limitations on flights and the Texas and Dega weekends were my only options this time.

You guys have been awesome and your comments have been making it hard to decide. For me... this is a big deal because we only have road courses here in Oz...... any ovals are just awesome. Because of short timeframes I am trying to make the most our what time I have in your great country.

TexasRaceLady, thanks for your assistance as well, I will drop some messages as you suggest.

All that plus Texas Rangers baseball,Cowboy Stadium right next door usually has something going on,I think Six Flags Amusement Park should be open by then.Check the American Airlines Center website to see what they have going on there. The Dallas Mavericks play Basketball there but they have concerts and other stuff also.Another lake that is close is Joe Pool Lake also.Great wolf Lodge has an indoor waterpark.Grapevine Mills is a pretty big Mall that is close also.

If I were traveling to a race from overseas, I'd definitely consider Richmond over Texas or Dega. It's in the same general timeframe and it's very close to DC. I don't think people realize the cost of tourism in DC versus anywhere else. They've finally opened the Capitol to visitors again. Plus there are some 20 free museums and the National Zoo (which is also totally free to visit) and over 50 free attractions overall. The weather in late April is usually picture perfect and the number of tourists scurrying around is at a minimum. Plus it's baseball season and the Nationals play in DC.

Agreed. I thought it was worth mentioning. We just don't have many deep thinkers on here today. :p

Me too. I think it's going to be a great season. I'm praying for Jeff Gordon to get back to the old school passing. Once he does, everyone will follow suit.

I agree it's worth mentioning Richmond... and I would definitely want to visit DC if I were out of country. Not many other places where you can just walk right in to some 20 museums and check out hundreds of exhibits.

I haven't been there in so long, but it's a cool city...for the most part. Crime got insane for many years with car jacking and gang shoot outs.

I've been to a plate race, I've been to MIS. I will never goto either of these tracks ever again. The fan experience sucks. I want to be up close to the cars.

And you can go visit your congress man or senator. How lovely is that. Not if you are from down under. But for the rest of us.

The biggest oval I've been to is Homestead and you can't see the entire track. Richmond, Dover and Rockingham are the perfect size. Dover's got a couple blind spots in sections but those three tracks, you can see the entire track and they're just the right size for a NASCAR track. But for the vacation value, it's worth it to stay in Charles County Maryland or King George Virginia for the week, go to the Richmond race on the weekend and go to DC during the week.

I mention guns and you mention going to visit your congressman. Nice. ;)
They kinda go hand in hand. You could walk in and say you are from the gun lobby, and then ask the congress man how many scum suckers he bagged this week while he was walking to his car? LOL

Seriously though, I been to DC twice. No, three times. And I remember going to the museums and the big sweeet buildings that millions of tax dollars built. And it was like a homeless man mecca. Tons of em everywhere. I was like, WTF.

Another great memory of that city, I was sitting on a concrete something or other out front of the air and space museum and a pigeon from up high dropped a bomb on my jacket. Hot chick was sitting next to me got freaked out when it hit me. Thought it was an albatross by the size of the skidding poo. Thank God I was wearing a coat.

Most of the crime is away from the tourist destinations in DC. That's in PG County and Northwest. I'd recommend staying in Charles County, MD or out Fergy's way in Northern Virginia.

Just another example of our government ****tin on the little guy.

Two questions: Did you open your coat, and what was underneath?
