Drunk driving is almost as deadly as smoking. Winston poured money into our sport.
Austin Dillion's death Wish coffee was the reason of this thread.

I do wonder how much different nascar today would be if not for Winston leaving. I've heard from some that the Chase was Nextel's idea for example. Now, a true leader would have recognized how stupid an idea it was, but Winston remaining might have had a profound impact.

Congress in their collective stupidity passed laws about cigarette advertising. Winston really had no choice but to leave.
The chase was Nextel;s idea intended to create more interest and compete with NFL in the fall.
Again collective stupidly won the day.

I thought existing sponsorships like Winston were grandfathered in.

Probably the same reason magazines and tv allow for alcohol and not tobacco products. It goes way beyond just NASCAR.

Chase for cup could have been applied to Winston too. No Bull 5 could have been the 5 car finale.

But they choose to do it. I'd bet more innocents die due to drunk drivers than second-hand smoke.

This is not true, you can resolve this with Google as well. 9,000 vs. 42,000.

Anyway, I liked some of the classic tobacco paint schemes. I even love classic movies in which the characters smoke like chimneys. But given what we know, I can't work up much genuine desire to see smoking promoted. Not only are there the nearly 500,000 deaths per year, but the health care costs of treating smoking related diseases is enormous. I just can't bring myself to be nostalgic for more of that.

Alcohol abuse is bad too. So is sugar and junk food. But one can probably make a better argument that it is possible to enjoy those products occasionally and in moderation moreso than American style cigarettes.

With Americas obesity crisis, Cheetos needs to be banned from sponsoring race cars too.

Well... Cheetos doesn't really sponsors any race cars...
Still the same same a campaign aimed at saving Thelma's thighs from painfully rubbing together " is something that would collectively soothe our consciousness,

Waiting now for my oh hell yeah kum-baya high fives

R.J. Reynolds.... (the parent company) actually had no choice but to pull their sponsorship..... because of Govt. intervention ...... It sure was a great pairing while it lasted.....

I think the Govt. needs to mind to a lot more important matters than dictating how private companies advertise.

Yes its so sad Our constitution was founded partially with economic roots in the plantations of North Carolina.
Tabacoo economic activity laid the groundwork for track construction. NASCAR is not a moblie phone
but a smoke stack.

Do you think Camel Joe was created to entice grown adults to smoke? Or.....

Maybe I'm missing something, but I think you've got it wrong.

Winston didn't get out of NASCAR because of government intervention but, in fact, government intervention is the reason Winston began sponsoring NASCAR in the first place.

Quoting Wikipedia:

"NASCAR's top series, the NASCAR Grand National Series, found sponsorship from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company (RJR) in the early 1970s following the United States ban on television advertising of cigarettes."

and

"On 5 February 2003, R. J. Reynolds informed NASCAR that their five-year extension to sponsor NASCAR's premier division signed in July 2002 could be dissolved because of economic concerns at the company."

Bud & Miller are trying to merge and they are both foreign owned companies now so those sponsorships might change.

I think Camel Joe was a shrewd marketing practice to get ANYONE to try Camels.... just like fast foods do... Wendy's, Burger King, McDonalds, KFC.... Marketing is what drives sales.... Govt. has deemed tobacco is the root of all evil in the U.S. ...... so....... legislate them out of business by limiting the marketing and tax the hell out any tobacco product....

You might be right........ I might be missing something..... I have been known for that before..... but..... I was under the impression that when Winston left... they wouldn't be able to advertise at the track.... set up any booths and basically be a non -entity even though they were putting out money for sponsorship....

What made it particularly egregious was the tobacco industry knew cigarettes were addictive and harmful for 50 years and continued to hide it or assuage the risks with marketing gimmicks like "filters" and "lights". Everybody knows alcohol can be bad for you, the temperance movement successfully banned alcohol for 13 years in this country. Soda is probably the next to go. It has zero nutritional value and can have serious health effects.

Along with ''fast'' foods..... which is the next targeted category....... everyone are being persuaded to cook ''healthy'' meals at home.... Ever go to the grocery store and look to see where the food you are buying is coming from? Most everything you buy is from China or Mexico.. Smithfield bacon and Green Giant are both China owned..... Everyone is focusing on tobacco and not paying attention to what they are eating....

My goodness even DuPont chemicals are bad. NAPA causes air pollution. Miller Lite causes drunkenness. There may be no sponsors left!

Breathing air in a metro city is bad for ones health too.

Thread is getting really silly with all of the slippery slope nonsense. If you're truly all about uncompromised freedom and liberty, fine I suppose. But most of this is unthinking cultural bias. Cigarettes are fine because...well, I don't know, because we were once told they were fine, and the gubmint is bad for cracking down on them.

To play the game in the opposite direction, why not call for blanket legalization of all drugs and bemoan the fact that heroin kingpins can't sponsor race cars. Because yes, smoking cigarettes kills more people than all other legal and illegal drugs combined. Plus homicides, plus suicides, and on and on.

But go ahead, wax nostalgic for more promotion of cancer sticks.

As a libertarian, I wholeheartedly endorse this. :D

And that would actually be a consistent position. I would disagree, because though I always lean toward more freedom, I am not an absolutist. The cigarette industry was a plague deceitfully perpetuated on the population for decades by drug dealers wearing business suits. Or, if you believed the ads, cowboy hats ;). Most actual plagues don't kill as many people.

Most people aren't true libertarians and wouldn't want to see hard drugs, pornography, etc. advertised in their 'family' sport.
