Why did the 17 put tape on the camera?

Their's a thread on Reddit about the roof hatch. Seems strange to me.

 
Well it looks like something was definitely going on as it appeared that an official came over to the car pretty quick and started taking pictures

Their is a couple video's of him putting weight on the roof hatch after his 2 wins.
 
Two and a half weeks into the offseason, and here we go! I think it had something to do with the broken wind tunnel.

Tapping up the roof flap. This is the wad of tape Stenhouse took off while covering up the camera.

Wow.. very curious.. you can hear the tape for sure.. what is it sealing off the part where the light (and in turn air) comes through? Got me interested for sure.. would that even be illegal? Lol

The taking pictures by the officials happens a lot, ive seen them do it during practice , so I dont know if means they feel shady stuff is going on, or if they are just making sure teams are being good.

I think it is SOP for the officials to take picture of various items on the winning race.
 
What point in that video should I be looking at? It's nearly three hours long! Somewhere near the end?

Something for was going on, no doubt , the were very much working on the darker shade of the grey in the grey area for sure, but was it cheating?

Pretty sure it’s illegal ... taping up the air gap interferes with opening the flap. The thing is a safety item.

They had to have really liked the gains they found to be that bold.

I am sure it is too, but I have not read the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series rule book , so I am not in the position to say it is 100% for a fact , illegal , but common sense would say it is.

I was under the impression that roof flaps were optional and some drivers did not want them. ???

Pretty sure they’re mandatory at the plate tracks.

I’m equally sure that nothing can be done that would interfere or might interfere with the operation of the thing.

He put black duct tape to seal the roof hatch from inside. You can hear him ripping the duct tape off in the video right after he covers the camera.
 
Covering up the camera before committing a crime ? geeeezzz ...... I am surprised nobody ever thought about that before
 
Heres how it happened, 17 gets through with his run, pulls tape off of helmet holding radio wire intact and accidentally sticks it perfectly on the lens of the camera inside the car. NASCAR officials who monitor this stuff like the FBI immediately send official to the car to document the entire ****pit for comparison with previous in car videos from earlier during the day. Ricky is asked "son why did you put the tape on the camera" and he rplies "i did"? Gosh I didnt even notice. Evidently they got away with it or it was complete coincidence. You decide.
 
Well, he pulled a mess of black tape from somewhere in the car! And definitely was doing something he didn't want anyone to see. o_O

But I made some screenshots from before and after he covered the camera. And I can't see anything different with the roof hatch (or anything else, for that matter). But of course, that camera angle doesn't show everything that is within his reach...
