Windtunnel discussion 4-3-11

1. Dump the playoff. It's possibly the single most derisive concept which has led to the current poor excuse for stock car racing we currently have. (It AND the horrible one-size-fits-all NA__AR designed POS car they race)

2. Measure the length of the race on all tracks of over a mile in length in Kilometers, as they do now at the road courses and at Phoenix. For example, the Pocono Pennsylvania 500 would be 500 Km's, or very close to 240 miles. Exempt two, possibly three landmark races from this rule: The Daytona 500, the World 600 at Charlotte and the Southern 500, when they return it to its rightful place, Darlington, on Labor Day! If they don't return it to Darlington, then make it a kilometer race also.

3. Dump the playoff.

4. On tracks of less than a mile in length have a maximum starting field of 34 cars.

5. Dump the #!@*! playoff!

6. Do away with the blatantly unfair Chosen 35 Rule. Give the team two chances to qualify and the fastest make the field, the rest pack up and go, no matter if your name is Johnson or Earnhardt.

7. ...and less I forget, GET RID OF THE RIDICULOUS PLAYOFF!

So...correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you think the chase might need a few adjustments:D

I had a totally different read on what John was trying to say about the chase... :D

I strongly agree with 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7!

I think the adjustments he proposed was expanding the Chase to 36 races, starting at Daytona in February, and expanding the Chase field to 43. :D

I happen to enjoy the chase.
That's certainly your prerogative, Spike. No problem with that. Heck, I actually have met people who like raw eggs, reality TV shows and rap "music," (term "music" used in the loosest possible context) too, so there is something out there for everyone.

I just have a question about your apparently solid approval of the playoff system:

How does the current playoff format make the actual racing better than it was before the format was changed?

While we are making unreasonable demands I'd like a million dollars and a pony.

First off, get rid of the damn cookie cutter tracks! How many tri-oval races do we honestly need in a season? If we have to re-open some older tracks, then so be it!

Second, have Chevy, Ford, Toyota, and Dodge set up a racing package for their cars. There's no excuse as to why a Ford car can't have a Ford engine, a Chevy car with Chevy engines, etc. Actually bring the manufacturers back into the competition.

Third, the same goes for the car themselves, bring back the production car, even though the COT looks better this year, it's still a COT, and it's still cookie cutter. There's a reason IROC isn't around anymore.

Fourth, I'd have to say, shorten the races. Races really are too long, I'd say the maximum miles a race should be (except for the Daytona 500) is 300 miles.

1. Get rid of the Chase
2. Shorter races
3. Make cars look like production model cars
4. Get rid of the Chase
5. More tracks in more markets
6. End the season on Labor Day Weekend at Darlington or Atlanta
7. Get rid of the Chase
8. Get Cup drivers out of Nationwide and Trucks
9. Get rid of the Chase
10. More short tracks (real short tracks)
11. Undo the Bristol re-configuration
12. Get rid of the Chase

No system is going to appeal to everyone. I guess I just dont see the difference. The 12 guys in the Chase are still going to the 1 through 12(most likely) at the end of the year even in the old format.

I may get horse whipped for this but I love the chase. Am I the only one that feels it's the best thing nascar has ever come up with? Maybe I like it so much becasue it's given my friends and I more things to bet on at the end of the year.

I totally agree that no single format will appeal to everyone. I also agree with most of your latter statement. Every year, and if you look back over the past decade I think this will be proved, roughly 80% of the top twelve in the final standings will be in the final twelve the following year. Cream usually rises to the top, but the so does foam on a beer and that is virtually worthless, and in itself, adds nothing to the taste of the beverage.:)

No disrespect meant but I would appreciate an answer to my question though:
"Exactly how does the current playoff format make the actual racing better than it was before the format was changed?"

It doesn't if anything it makes it worse because once a team knows they are locked in to the final 10 or 12 or whatever it is now, they tend to be more conservative. This results in boring racing. Maybe we should award points based on finishes. Only give out points for the first top 10, 10 points for first, 9 for second, and so on. This would encourage teams to pretty much go all out to get points.

We're basically on the same page, except I feel they should make winning earn roughly 30% more points than 2nd, which should earn roughly 20% more points than 3th which should warn 12% more than 4th. Give points only to position 25 in a 43-car field and position 20 in a 34-car field. I believe that it is evident to most that one of the solutions to the current pee-poor state of actual racing is to give incentive to race for the win. There are a multitude of way to accomplish that but NA__AR chooses to completely ignore the problem and gives us the current "Points Formula for Dummies" concept they dreamed up this season.

I think a lot of the problem revolves around the inflated importance that NA__AR and it's parrot media corps places on the championship. Speaking only for myself, I watch a race for the excitement of the race itself, and NOT as just a stepping stone on the way to the championship. But, that's just me and I'm just a geezer and definitely NOT in step with much of today's society. I still look at racing as hard-fought competition and NOT just another entertainment venue.

I would still be very interested in hearing from the fans of the playoff just exactly how it makes the racing better (assuming they watch the races for racing, that is).
