So it's Sprint's last weekend in the sport excluding the banquet. Many fans will probably remember the grandfathering of communication companies when Nextel took over the series from Winston. Do you think those various communication companies will come back to the sport as potential sponsor's again? It could open up a lot of opportunity for teams.

Remind me, what telecom companies were active in the sport when Sprint took over? All I can remember are AllTel (Newman) and Cingular (Burton), and I don't think either of them are in business any more. They certainly aren't coming back. Even if they were still around, two additional potential sponsors aren't going to have much of an impact on teams.

I guess the question should be, regardless of who is named, will their existing competitors eventually get the boot? And will that effect counterbalance whatever gains there may be from Sprint leaving?

Wasn't AT&T another? Once a Jeff Burton sponsor @ RCR.

The point being is that with Sprints exit, those businesses and more can come back to the sport. To think that can't be of great value to even a single team is a little short sighted.

I'd like to see the other carriers get back into the sport. Maybe Sprints stranglehold on portable towers around the racing venues will allow those users of different carriers a decent connection when attending a race. Data is almost completely unavailable to a Verizon user @ a venue like Martinsville that is in more of a rural location.

Unfortunately, there are probably going to be losers in all of this as well. No doubt, if Monster is named, others like 5Hr will not be around long.

The communication companies remind me of Terminator 2; the Bell system was broken up into ten companies and they are merging back together.

Alltel was bought by Verizon and Cingular was bought by AT&T.

I could see TMobile or Cricket jump in as well as Verizon and ATT. NASCAR still has a huge fan base.

I'm asking if those business still exist. They have to still be there before they can come back. And as you asked in your second post, will those enabled by one sponsors exit will mirror those lost by another sponsors entry?

There or replaced. Your certainly no stranger to wireless carriers I'd imagine. They will all now be able to participate in the sport.

Yeah, it could very well be a wash.

Actually, I have very little dealings with wireless carriers. At work, someone else in the department is responsible for all smart phone hardware and accounts. Personally, I don't have even a flip phone. I've never dealt with any of the carriers and would have no clue where to start. Consumer Reports, I guess.

Good riddance. Sprint did not do a great job of promoting or bringing in fans compared to Winston.

Hopefully Monster Energy can do a good job. 5 Hour Energy is grandfathered in, but other energy drink sponsors may be blocked.

Monster will be an awesome sponsor! Right off the bat their monster energy girls are fantastic.

I have been attending the monster energy Supercross events at Metlife stadium here since they started a few years ago. The events are very well run and it's a great time. I'd love to see that be carried over to nascar.

Alltel was bought by Verizon. They sponsored Penske for several years and still do in IndyCar I think. Was a huge mess because Penske wasn't even allowed to run black and red paint schemes in Cup.

Cingular was bought by AT&T. That's what started the merger controversy. NASCAR said AT&T could no longer sponsor Richard Childress Racing. A few weeks later, NASCAR announced the change from Nextel to Sprint.

Sprint sponsored Richard Petty Enterprises for several years as well.

Motorola sponsored Robby Gordon and they were booted as a sponsor by NASCAR because they manufactured phones, although NASCAR didn't mind them being a title sponsor. I think there might have been kicked out because they made phones, but it was a general electronics company. Sony, I think?

I hope telecommunications companies and electronic companies get back in the sport. This entire saga took place at the height of a telecommunications boom and NASCAR was competing against the teams and drivers in a time when the sport was in decline. What an ugly chapter.

Sprint also sucks. I remember I was with Nextel, then Sprint, for a couple years. The day my contract expired, I switched to Verizon. I've switched between Verizon and AT&T, depending on where I live, ever since then.

Seems to me that Microsoft has been doing more to advance technology and advance the sport than anyone. I'm shocked they were ever allowed to sponsor a car in the sport because Microsoft bought Nokia and manufacturers cell phones too.

''In a time when the sport was in a decline''.......... ?????????? I haven't noticed a resurgence....... from what I have seen the ratings and attendance are still down and they are still pulling out seats.......

I'm sure NASCAR will make them wear firesuits.

Still is in decline, but you know what I mean. A booming industry, an industry that was growing even during the height of the recession, was completely banned from sponsoring teams and drivers in NASCAR.

I don't see those telecom giants coming in now though. That ship has sailed.

I don't either...... and really think that Nascar and the France family are going to have to come to grips and realize that going forward their commodities have lost a whole lot of their value.........The T.V. deals are what most amaze me..... they keep paying more money as the viewership continues to decline.....

I sure do miss Winston. I'd go to the Martinsville race with non-smokers and come home with four cartons of cigarettes and plenty of free dip. Did that many times. I bet phone companies don't give out free minutes.

This was true up until near the end of their run in the sport. As a smoker, way back when, I used to walk away from the track with my share of free cartons. Those cartons continued to be reduced in size and were eventually eliminated as freebee's as Winston's time in the sport neared an end.

When I was a kid, my family doctor smoked in his office. My dentist and most of my teachers were smokers.

Those days are gone. I wonder what the future holds for the energy drink industry?

Yep, I remember them first cutting it to half a carton, then two packs, and eventually nada. RJ Reynolds was a great sponsor to NASCAR and I don't just mean free cigarettes. They had all sorts of trackside activities before the races and hot Winston chicks all over the place. Those were the good old days. The last cigarette sponsor I can remember was Victory Brand with John Andretti and that was short lived. The team was crap and I'm sure the cigarettes were too.

What I don't get is .... smoking tobacco is sooooooo terrible that you can't even let them advertise or sponsor sporting events .... but dozens of states just held a vote on making cannabis ok. That's not going to encourage smoking?

Both confirmed that they are done after awards banquet at vegas Jillian was on fast lane taking about it.

I'm sure they had their resumes out along time ago. Must be 100's of jobs where you get paid a lot to smile. :sarcasm:
