He hit it.
It crushed the front of the car, but was nowhere close to the windshield. He should be okay.
Just thankful that it wasn't worse.

This is why I worry the Next Gen Cup cars are too sturdy. A more sturdy car hitting that fence would have been catastrophic

No, because the car would have stayed on the fence longer and rolled, increasing the odds of the driver compartment being compromised
