He’s probably going to be a lot more focused on doing so instead of having all 4 cars to worry about normally vs just the 88.

Ahh I thought maybe him, but I wasn't 100% sure. Knew he was a driver and owner. Didn't know if he ever really did anything as a Crew Chief

Looking at racing reference Lee Petty is listed as his own crew chief for his championships

in 1968, Johnson acted as the crew chief for driver LeeRoy Yarbrough at Junior Johnson & Associates. During that season, the duo won two races together, at Trenton and Atlanta. This stint was brief, as Johnson was primarily known for his 50 career wins as a driver (retiring in 1966) and his 132 wins and six championships as a team owner with drivers like Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip.

EDIT Looks like Wendell Scott was all three at the same time too.
It really makes sense back then when drivers worked on their own cars. Feel like Chief Mechanic might be more accurate than what the modern crew chief is.

I think among that bunch one or two were also their pit crew. I remember a clip of somebody, it might have been Hylton changing his own tires during a race.
