Time for NASCAR to man up and admit they screwed Regan Smith a few years ago. Regan Smith is the only driver the yellow line rule has ever applied to. Junyer won a race going below the yellow line. Hamlin's advanced his position below the yellow line countless times. And there was the truck race a few years ago. And now Johnson wins a race going below the yellow line.

Pretty evident that rule only applies to lesser-known drivers racing for small teams.

As much as I hate to see JJ dominating the sport let me spell this out for you. Johnson did go below the double yellow but he did not advance his position while he was down there.

Smith did go below the double yellow and did advance his position.

Look at it again.

I did look at it.

Regan Smith went below the yellow line, started to advance his position and had all four tires above the yellow line before he actually had a nose out in front of Stewie.

Jimmie Johnson -- same exact deal.

Regan Smith got screwed... but we all know why, NASCAR wanted Tony to win one more time with Joe Gibbs.

Oh yeah, this is the same guy who failed technical inspections TWICE last year and never got penalized for them.

It's a shame that the rules don't apply to certain drivers.

Johnson had a tire on the line and did not advance his position until after he was above the line. Trust me, I thought the same thing as you and watched the finish about twenty times.

And it was the EXACT same thing with Regan Smith. All four tires were above the yellow line before he got ahead of Stewart.

I say he advanced his position over Harvick while below the line.

I really don't understand the complaining about this.....its Jimmie Johnson, he didn't go below the yellow line. The yellow line obviously came up on him.

From the article: Conspiracists howled, but here's how NASCAR explains the rule: a driver cannot go below the yellow line to advance position. Johnson most certainly did advance his position, but did he go below the yellow line? Photographic evidence seems to indicate that his tires were on, but not over, the yellow line. Yahoo! Sports confirmed with NASCAR that the tires would have to be over the inside of both yellow lines; in other words, the line itself is still "in bounds."

Sheesh just replace the yellow line with spike strips, there will be no debate then.:D

Basically its like a foul ball in baseball if its on the line its fair.

Welcome to racing. Its the same where no matter where you go. And its been this way forever. Aint gonna change now, aint gonna change ever. If you are a favorite of a racing series the heads will get turned. What ever makes the money.

I think this is hilarious. I didn't get to watch the race today, but I did hear it in the radio in my truck driving home. As soon as Johnson won with a pass on the low side I thought, well, I bet the first thing folks will be saying is "he was below the yellow line." And sure enough BAM...there it is! lol

When I got home and watched the tape, it didn't look to me like he was over. The photo above pretty much shows it. He was on but not below. I am positive when he made the pass for the win he was above...but that is a whole different story.

Well, it is Andy. He'd be better served claiming the race was actually a tie. I'll have more on that myself tomorrow. :D

Ok If JJ was on the line what about his pusher Jr.? Looks like he was slightly below the line, so how do you apply the rule to this? The pusher is below the line helping you advance your position, so essentially he is doing something illegal attached to you. Shouldn't you be considered one at that point? I don't know, but IMO this just adds to the suck factor of the tandem crap.

Yeah but Jr didn't advance his position below the line, but Jimmy did......:D:D
(just throwing that out there for another possible twist, he very well may have advanced his POS. too.)

just got the chance to finally take a look at my dvr and the replays. what i'm looking at is the overhead shot of the last lap, after the race when dw is reviewing the finish, right before the winner's cricle interview.

i understand camera angles can fool you and there is a shadow, but it sure looks like he went below the line. and don't tell me he didn't advance his position. he didn't lift, he advanced.

also, the video from junior's in car camera sure makes it look like the yellow line had to be crossed, unless it suddenly went from being curved to being straight line.

i agree: the yellow line rule needs to go.

Smith was forced below the line to be honest. But I mean you won't admit to that being a fan of the one who "won" that day.

Anyway on to this top drivers have got it taken away from them i.e Denny in I think the shootout or one of the Duels I forget which it was.

He's at marks door, he is'nt by Jeffy yet.
Bottom line, nascar wants 4 wide at these finishes, and they'll look the other way a bit, if it brings ratings.

It doesn't matter if he's by Jeff or not. They don't say you have to advance your position by passing the leader down there for it to be a penalty.
But I agree with you. Even if he was on the flat part they would overlook it for the finish.

My thought. Not going below the yellow line was certainly intended as a safety issue, especially in the turn where the change from flat to banking can really disrupt a car and cause a big one (as it has in the past). However, down the straight the change isn't as abrupt, and should not be an issue.

Now for anyone saying "then NASCAR needs to admit the were wrong" for something that happened theree year ago, you need to get over it. Repeat after me:

"Goosefraba."

I've watched the replay and saw the pictures and I don't think JJ did anything wrong. I'm one of those who can't stand the guy but looks like he won this one fair and square.

I agree I just can't see it.

What, you have never seen a black helicopter? Come on SF, we all know that NASCAR bends over backwards to help certain drivers... :sarcasm:

Hey, I would like nothing more than to say JJ cheated. It's quite fun but I need at least a little proof before I can say that. None in this case.

Agreed. That is what I said in the the first page of this post.

This really seems to come from JJ haters. Even Kevin Harvick tweeted that fans should get over it. It wasn't a foul.

From SceneDaily.com...
The yellow-line rule is not addressed in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rulebook. During Sunday’s drivers’ meeting prior to the race, competitors were reminded of the rule as it was read in the prerace rules update video, stating the following:

“This is your warning. Race above the yellow lines. If in NASCAR’s judgment, you go below the yellow lines to improve your position, you will be black-flagged. If in NASCAR’s judgment, you force someone below the yellow lines in an effort to stop them from passing you, you may be black-flagged.”

As I said, the only people calling this BS are fans, not the drivers/owners/crew.

I'm in favor of the yellow line rule - just not on the last lap. As soon as the white flag waves, I say let these guys have at it.

You'll still have controversy and accidents on the last lap, but at least we can take any NASCAR judging of the yellow line rule out of the equation.

Let the frontstretch grass be the boundary. Not sure how many drivers would be willing to make a pass in the grass at 180 mph - at Talladega.
