How long will Jr. continue to hold on to his fans? Yeah, I think that there are those diehard fans who will stick with him through thick and thin, but it's been running pretty thin now for some time. We all like to see a winner now and then and when we don't we tend to look elsewhere. I just wonder how long frustrated Jr. fans will continue to flock to his souvineer hauler.

Oh, and before you accuse me of bing a Jr. hater, I'm actually a fan of his.

I have never disliked Jr. But he has never WON his fans. I wonder from race to race how he can keep so many of them. It is obvious to me that there are many drivers out there that, put in his equipment, would be winners. And yet, even in the premier cars, he is a back runner in most races.
For sure he drives good enough to deserve a ride..but not good enough to have the fan base he has.
Betsy:rolleyes:

His back to back Busch titles put him on the map. I think his dad being gone has had more of an impact than he might admit.

People seem to forget about his Busch titles. He may lose a few fans but as soon as he starts winning again and climbs in the Chase, which he will, he will continue to be the most popular. No, he isn't as good as Jeff Gordon, but he is a good driver, don't understimate him.

Junior inherited many of his fans from his dad. I know people who are his fans for that reason only. It is like they have to hang on to something with an Earnhart last name. It is like some kind of family loyalty. Junior will continue to lose fans because more and more people are beginning to realize that he is NOT a championship caliber driver. He is the #4 driver in the Hendrick stable, and will continue to be the #4 driver until Martin retires. Then Junior will climb to #3, never to be higher. He may win a race here and there, but he is not in the same class as Johnson, Gordon, Edwards, both Busches, Stewart, and others.

I can see the money he brings in to the car owner being wonderful...but except for the money I'd far rather have Joey in that seat than Dale. At least you MIGHT get a great driver out of Joey.
Betsy:rolleyes:

Seems like everyone "expects" Jr to be as good as his Dad and if he doesn't live up to those expectations then he can't drive. I have some sympathy for him when people expect that kind of performance from him. He has done well and i believe he is one of the top 12 drivers.

I think Jr either can't explain to Eury what the car needs or Eury doesn't know how to fix it. If he complains he's tight they make him too loose and vice versa. They never seem to get it "right". I learned, the hard way, that working with family is hard. Jr said the same in a interview. He needs someone else on the box.

He doesn't help himself much on pit road either, too many mistakes.

He needs someone that can control him. He thinks because he is the son of a famous driver, he knows all that there is to know about racing and cars. He does not. His biggest problem is that he is not real bright. He can not communicate with his pit crew chief, and he really does not listen to him. I never thought he would amount to much, and right now, there are 15 drivers that I would take over him.

Some really good opinons here, keep them coming. I have said before that I'm a fan of Jr. but I was never a fan of his father. My explanation of why I'm a fan is probably silly, but it goes to the point that I believe that the kid is humble. He is nothing like his father with the exception of how he races on the plate tracks. There is nothing bad about him not being an equal to his father, and I don't believe that his fans really expect him to be. But I do think that if he doesn't get back on the winning track that his popularity as a driver will begin to wane. His moving to Hendrick Motorsports was supposed to be a big boost in his performance, but to date, it hasn't done a thing. Other than one win, he is still just a mediocre driver, in a plethora of better drivers. A name can carry you only so far and I wonder have we seen the end to it?

Seriously, what is it with some of you NASCAR fans and the Jr. hate? Why is it a big deal to some of you that he inherited fans from his father? That's not a bad thing. Are you simply jealous of his popularity over your driver? I've been a fan of his for a long time and I was a fan of his father as well. I'll continue to be a fan of his as long as he shows up every week. That being said, I find it very entertaining that you all can take time out of your day to critique my driver. I really hope that Jr. is able to read all of you helpful posts so that he can turn his season around. Here's a summary of some of the most popular. Make sure that you take time to add to the list.

1) He needs to quit thinking that he knows everything about racing & cars.
2) He needs to go back to school because he's not real smart.
3) He needs to learn how to communicate better.
4) He needs to be kept in control.

I'd argue that with Jeff and Jimmie being front runners and a danger of winning at almost every track and winning the Championship in any given year that Lil'E more than pulls his weight bringing in the needed cash to keep the equipment top notch. As long as Hendrick is able to use the Earnhardt name to separate the gullible from their money Lil'E is holding up his end of the deal whether he ever wins a championship or even a race...

Junior will keep his fans. I don't dislike the guy, but my husband and I get to sick to death of the way the media pushes him down our throats. He's going to keep winning the fan favorite vote until he retires, I think. The 3 favorite drivers are Junior, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart. Johnson just barely makes the top ten. Junior brings in mega money. This year on the vote for your favorite driver page, they're listing the top 10 in order where previously, they said the drivers were listed alphabetically. There are other drivers on the track who don't win all that much and have never won a championship who people still think are better drivers than Lil E and support them. To each their own.

Did I like it that Jeff wasn't winning? Not one bit, but I wasn't about to jump ship to another driver. I like other drivers, too. Depending on who is out front, I'll root for the driver I like best if Jeff's not there. Everyone knows I'm a Stewart fan, too. I have sentimental favorites as well as liking a lot of the other good drivers. It helps. I love seeing Bobby LaBonte do well among others. I root for some of the young guys who haven't been given the great deals some of the others have gotten. I love when A.J. Allmendinger does well so Red Bull can feel more like idiots than they already must for letting him go. :D

I'm sure Junior's fans are disappointed he's not doing better and I've heard some crazy conspiracy theories out there that Hendrick is giving him spare parts. Like it wouldn't be great for Rick if he was winning? LOL Seriously.

I was a Big E fan from the beginning --- 1979. I have been a Junior fan from the beginning --- 1998.

I will continue to his fan, and the fan of many others, until he quits. For me, it has nothing to with wins or championships.

Another terrible performance by Junior yesterday. When is he going to learn? He and his team are terrible. To run like that with Hendrick equipment is a joke. There is no coordination between driver and pit crew. Junior is unable to change his driving style to adapt to the track or the situation that is presented to him. Many fans of his that I know have now given up on him, and on Nascar in general. He is just not worth watching any more.

You never give up on your favorite driver.

I think Jr's problem isn't lack of talent. I mean sure, he's not, and never will be one of the top drivers out there. But, he's got 18 wins and 2 Busch championship that show that he's at least got some talent in a race car. What i think his problem is, is focus. He seems to be riding on his own name right now, and not even attempting to go any further. He's got his endorsement deals, the fan vote, the television spots and commercials. Hell, he even said himself earlier this year that he doesnt' practice. And for whatever reason (i'm sure it's the cash cow that he brings with him...), Hendrick seems content with that 88 car just being out on the track rather than being a front runner.

He lead a bunch of laps, had a 4 sec. lead at 1 point in the race,if it wasn't for that last set of tires they put on at the end he might have won.I don't really see that as terrible.I think their tire specialist needs to be changed.

Ut oh... his tire specialist is a friend of my niece's. They graduated from HS together. He worked for Harvick and Richard Childress for many years before he came to work with Junior.

It's more than his tires. His pit stops have been poor. His adjustments have been off.

I should go and find the article I was going to post here about Junior is now changing his diet and is to work out more. He's switching from Doritos to tuna and Trisquits, among other things. I think Mark is getting on him to work out more. They should could help him not look so wiped out at the end of every race and upping his physical shape will help him all around as a driver. I think he might want to check with a nutritionist before he eats too much of that tuna. ;)

His first pit stop of the night put him behind the 8 Ball.
Lots of teams are having problems with lug nuts due to the longer stud rule.

Thanks again Brian for fixing a problem that didn't exsist.:sarcasm:

I do think he has let himself go physically. I still like the kid and wish him well.
Like I have said before, I do not dislike any of the drivers. They are the cream of the crop. Outside these top fifty drivers is another five thousand just hoping they can make it to the top.

Maybe JR should borrow Kasey"s GPS so he can find his pit box. :D

LOL Good one! :D

Hendrick should force him to get another crew chief, at least for the rest of the season to see where the real problem is. Not like the experiment that took place at DEI a few years ago, but a real crew chief swap.

I am not a big fan of Jr. but something stinks when a guy with his talent consistantly has problems like he has this season. His car almost always gets worse as a race goes on.

That's true and I do think Eury Jr. makes a lot of terrible calls. People were screaming for Steve LeTarte's head last year and now everyone thinks he's great again - hello everyone - remember 07? I make no comparison between Steve and Tony Jr. because I think Steve is a much better CC. It's just that the CC takes a great deal of the criticism when the driver is doing poorly and doesn't get the same praise unless they have years like Knaus with JJ or back in the days of Ray with Jeff. Jeff admits it was a lot of him last year. Junior needs to take his part of the responsibility as well. I don't think he and Tony Jr. are good with one another anymore and they could use a break. FWIW.

Bring back Eury Sr.

well, Im gonna put my two cents in i guess.......... Why is Jr so popular? Well, I think it has many reasons......
1. His dad- yea, he has alot of fans that loved his dad
2. His story- There were many good stories when he was racin and winnin in Busch about him and his dad
3. His roots. Yea, he is a "good ole boy" from the south. He represents, at least in a rose colored glasses way, the roots of the sport. He paid his dues on dirt, he worked his way through the sport, in the shop, on the track, and learned his craft from the inside out.
4. His attitude- He knows where he came from. He seems to have a general love for the sport, and he knows much of its history. he really comes off as a laid back, easy goin kinda guy........
Now, why is he not succesful???? Well, personally I think there are many reasons as well........
1. He needs hunger. I just beleive he has it whooped and knows it. He could retire now, and be considered one of the greats, and never need to worry about money. His dad came up hungry, and never lost that desire. I just don't know if Jr has it.
2. He needs somethin like what his dad had startin out....... he needs a "Suit Case" Jake, or a Harry Hyde........ He needs a tough crew chief. One that he respects, and will let them worry about the car. That will make the good calls, and hold HIM ( Jr) accountable when he screws up. There are too many peeps and family around him that will pat him on the back and say its ok, you'll get em next week.......
3. He needs to take what he is doin seriously...... I think for him, its just somethin he's been around his whole life, its not a WAY of life. He needs to concentrate....... same thing that Kyle Petty had so much trouble with over the years.
4. He needs to outgrow the shadow....... It's gonna be hard, but not impossible. Richard Petty did it from under Lee, Buddy baker did it over Buck..... Not that they need to forget Big E, but he needs to have enough success to stand on his own merit.........
Thats some of what I see anyway........ but who knows........lol

I think you nailed it.

If a person really likes a driver, they will stick with them. Yeah, I can see the bandwagon fans jumping to another driver who is doing better. This is just like in sports where people jump from team to team, it just depends on who is winning. I hate that myself.

Look, Danica has only won 1 race but Ive followed her for several years, starting with the Atlantics in 2004. She will always be my favoite driver.

He may win a race here and there, but he is not in the same class as Johnson, Gordon, Edwards, both Busches, Stewart, and others.

I totally disagree...Jr is a Championship caliber driver, he has proven this in the Busch series, and he will win a Cup title soon, maybe even within the next 2 years. To say he is not in the same league with the drivers you mentioned is not an accurate assumption of his talent, his qualities, AND HIS WILL TO WIN. Jr has been and will continue to be one of the top 5 guys to beat week in and week out. When that team completely gells, it will be just like the rest of the Hendrick teams in the stable.....very hard to beat. He didn't go to Hendrick just to ride around and be a has been. He went there for one reason only ....to win a Championship!;)

Very good points:beerbang:

I think that most are overanalyzing the problem, which isn't unusual.

It is actually Hendrick's problem and he needs to solve it, and pronto.

I'd say Lil'E was a championship caliber driver when Dale was alive and pushing him. Lil'E had something to prove then. But, now reading SWPs post and applying to how Lil'E has done since it looks painfully obvious.

Course if he never gets behind a wheel again I wouldn't shed many tears. Not that I dislike him so much but his IDIOT fans make it hard to stomach. Same as the Cryowhina fans and their precious unc-CH. They give fandom a bad name.

Junior has very litle brain power. The fool almost became a crispy critter in a Porshe a few years ago. He has no idea of how to correct a problem. He just complains about it, and if does not like the measures taken to correct the problem, he complains some more.

Junior is NOT a Top 5 Driver. That is the biggest joke I have seen in years. He is NOT a Top 10 driver. He knows one way to race, and one way only. If his car is not set up for that type of race, he loses. He continuously screws up on pit row. He will not listen to his crew chief, or anyone else for that matter. He is the ONLY driver in the Hendricks camp that is nowheres near the Top 12 in points, and has not won a race this season. He is the #4 driver for Hendricks, and will never climb ahead of Gordon or Johnson. Anyone who thinks that this clown can win the title this year is either completely ignorant when it comes to Nascar racing, or the biggest homer in here. To show you how bad he really is, I will post his record against some other dirvers in a few minutes.

Add on: Junior has won 18 races in his career. He has no driving titles. Kurt Bush has won 19 races and a driving title in the same time. Matt Kennseth has won 18 races and 1 title. Kyle Busch has won 14 races in just a couple of years. Carl Edwards has won 16 races in less than half the time that Junior has been around. Obviously Junior could not wipe Gordon's or Johnson's tail, so there is no point in comparing him to those two. Stewart has also won many more races. There are 7 drivers much metter than Junior, and that is just off the top of my head. I'm sure you can throw in Mark Martin and others into the mix also.

Yup, all his fault the car caught fire, I'm sure.

Umm, 2 Busch championships? Those are driving titles as well, or did I miss something?

Ok Dude not sure why you dislike Jr. so much, what you have against him, maybe you know him personally and he ticked you off or something...don't know. You are way off in your assumptions, perhaps you really need to examine what you just wrote and check your self.

Prove that my stats are wrong. Prove that this loser has done anything in Nascar in the past 4 years. He is a failure. What has he done lately? Are you telling me that he has the ability to win a Championship? I would love to take your money on that. He has ZERO chance to win a championship. NONE. Again, prove me wrong. If there is anyone in here that thinks that Junior can win a championship either this year or next, tell me how much money you are willing to put up. I have plenty, so don't be shy.
