I know this isn't all that uncommon among some professional sports figures but this was the first that I had heard of this in regard to Hamlin. Maybe it'll help turn some things around for him?

Denny Hamlin said Tuesday he’s been working with a well-known sports psychologist in an attempt to improve his attitude and outlook.

Hamlin has been in a miserable slump since the penultimate race of last season, when poor fuel mileage at Phoenix figured heavily in his failure to wrest the championship away from Jimmie Johnson. Although he was still the points leader heading into the final race of the year, he had a poor weekend and Johnson won his fifth consecutive title.

Many have speculated he’s not been the same on or off the track since the Phoenix race, and Hamlin admitted Tuesday he struggled with the pressure of the championship race.

Now he’s working with Bob Rotella, a noted psychologist who has worked with several PGA golfers over the years. Hamlin believes he’s learned things from Rotella that could have made a difference last season.

“I’ve been working with a guy who has been working on my attitude and outlook,” Hamlin said. “I feel like if I would have known then what I know now, about how to treat each weekend, having fun doing what I’m doing, then I would have been much better off.”

Rotella has worked as a consultant for athletes in almost every professional sport, and Darren Clarke credited the psychologist after winning this year’s British Open.

Hamlin was initially reluctant to elaborate on whom he was working with, but eventually revealed it was Rotella and he had been referred to him by team owner Joe Gibbs. He did not say how long he’s been working with Rotella.

But he was in much better spirits Tuesday during an appearance at the NASCAR Hall of Fame than he’s been in some time. He was loose and laughing, and acknowledged he’s seemed distant and moody this year.

“You’ve got to understand, you could see me just walking through the garage and hang (my) head and be embarrassed,” Hamlin said.

He was referring to what likely will go down as the worst season of his career. He’s got just one victory and is ranked 12th in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. He also needed a strong final month of the regular season to earn a wild-card berth into the Chase.

It’s a far cry from the driver who won eight races last season and took a 15-point lead over Johnson into the finale. A 14th-place finish at Homestead cost Hamlin the title, by 39 points to Johnson. No one has doubted that defeat was embarrassing for Hamlin and has been difficult for him to overcome.

He said Tuesday he didn’t even enjoy his title hunt last year.

“I felt like last year I didn’t have a whole lot of fun,” Hamlin said. “I put so much pressure on myself to run a specific position every single race and I had a plan and executed. It almost worked, but I didn’t have fun.

“When I get back to that situation, and, hopefully, it’s next year, I’ll be able to apply those things. I’ve got to treat each race as the same amount of importance as the previous one and the one that goes after that. I’ve talked to someone who is really, really smart and knows a lot about sports and how it works. Each race I’ve got to treat with the same importance. I can’t build myself up to believe that one race is bigger than the next.”

The start of the Chase two weeks ago gave him a fresh start, but a poor run in the opener at Chicago put him in a deep hole few thought he could recover from. His Joe Gibbs Racing team gambled on fuel last week at New Hampshire, and had it worked, Hamlin would have stolen a top-five finish that could have started his climb from the bottom of the Chase standings.

Instead, he ran out of gas, finished 29th and now trails leader Tony Stewart by a seemingly insurmountable 66 points. But he defended crew chief Mike Ford’s strategy, and said Ford has been unfairly blamed for the No. 11 team’s struggles this year.

“It’s on him as much as it’s on me, but he faces a lot of scrutiny, some of it unjust,” Hamlin said. “It’s just one of those years where you just can’t get some momentum and get it rolling.”

Now, perhaps because of advice he’s received from Rotella, Hamlin said he’s focused on getting his team turned around and back into Victory Lane.

“I am more motivated to win races now than I was if I was in the championship battle,” he said. “I just want to go out and win at this point, and I feel like not having the pressure of a championship on my back will help me do that.”

From here.

Hmmm....somehow I don't think that a psychologist is Denny's problem...I am thinking the words "flash in the pan" comes to mind from another thread :D

I think you're right.

From just his body language and facial expressions it seems he's more of a angry young man vs a happy camper. IMHO of course.

Yep, and I remember in 2009 Denny telling the press that Brad doesn't race in cup, so he has no idea what it takes. That's pretty funny, now that Denny has folded his way out of one championship and killed his teams moral by publicly expressing his lack of confidence in JGR engines.

It's interesting the impact Brad has had on a few drivers. Kyle Busch said that the fan reaction at Bristol last year got him to take a long look at himself and try to make changes.

When you look at how Brad stayed focused on the NW championship last year while Kyle and Carl intentionally wrecked him 3 times, Carl wrecking him at Atlanta, being put on probation for no reason and then how he responded to his injury this year, the guy sure is focused. Meanwhile, Denny chokes on a little fuel issue last year and gives away the championship. Year after year, Kyle folds under the pressure of the chase, and Brad just keeps tooling along taking it in stride.

Brad has said more than once that JJ's calm focus has won him a couple of his championships, and he's right.

Everything you said here is well said and on the money!

Hamlin is a guy that when he is winning, is very arrogant, when he is not, he is either furious or "depressed" You have to take things in stride and stay calm. JJ is a perfect example of this. For years he was called a "robot" or "vanilla" yet he is winning championships. This year it seems not running as well has gotten to him a little bit and he has let some emotion get in his way. He now is 10th in points instead of in the top5. There really is something to be said for staying calm and being a little "vanilla."

Thanks, Gordo. I really think JJ messed up his comfort zone within the cup garage with his high and mighty attitude toward guys who race him hard. When he came out to wreck Kurt at Richmond, he jumped into 'have at it', and now guys like Biffle and Kyle are racing him as hard as they do anyone else. I've said for years that JJ is a great driver, but everyone makes it too easy for him to work his way back to the front after a bad pit stop etc. He could restart 14th, drive throught the field in 20 laps and still have fresh tires. JJ will adapt, but not this year.

Denny will grow up - in time. I don't think that anyone questions his ability but like his infamous teammate Pee Wee, he needs a serious attitude adjustment. Kyle has made great strides in that area so maybe Grand Slam can learn something from The Wee!

I don't think Kyle's capable of changing. Only reason he's not AS bad as his brother is because he wins races.

Andy, I think that Kyle has made great progress over the past two years! Kurt will Never change.

Denny has the opportunity to become a great driver, IMO.

No, he's putting on a nice PR act. Every time something happens on the track, the old Kyle Busch shows up.

Denny is a head case. At times arrogant, and other times seemingly delicate. Looked silly trying to get in JJs head last fall, especially in the aftermath of an almost year long hang over.

But not a flash in the pan. He has great talent and is capable of dominating at times.
Even if he doesn't master his own demons, he is still perfectly capable putting together hot streaks as already demonstrated.

He is no Dale Sr, but in 92 Dale only had one win and finished down in the points. He looked to be in decline, but he still came back and won two more titles. I would write Hamlin off for this year, but only for this year.

Not a big fan of his demeanor or style, but he will survive my disapproval, and he does have the already proven talent.

You make some good points here, but I don't think Denny is a guy that is having an "off year" and will bounce back...I think instead he may be more like a Kasey Kahne who had one or two good years, and has been in the toilet ever since with a win every now and again mixed in. I would say Denny's "off" year was his performance last year, this year could be more of the norm from him.....

not sure if tiger woods saw a sport psychologist but if he did i hope it wasn't this one.

I don't think a sports psychologist was Tigers down fall. I think his pants falling down ruined him. :D

On a side note, I have watched Denny go from a vibrant individual to a person with sunken eyes and sickly teeth. Is anyone else seeing this?

Kahne?

Let's see if that point stands when he gets the Hendrick eqipment.
I see a lot more W's, and I don't get the disrespect, for a guy who has driven for distressed teams in recent years, he has performed well.

You make him sound like a crack whore. Denny has always been talented. He just needs to go through some tough times to get stronger.

I think it's possible that Hamlin isn't as good as he thinks he is and he wouldn't be the first next big thing.

Ryan Newman won 8 races in 2003 and #12 Dodge shirts could be seen far and wide.

He's won 6 races since 2003 and although he's a good driver, I feel he hasn't yet lived up to the potential that he was said to have.

Even today there are a couple of younger drivers making a big splash who people ooh and aah over. The truth is that in five years they may become also rans, driving S&P's just as Hamlin may.

I understand the emotions of the drivers, they all want to win Championships. But come on... depressed?

And what does Hamlin do for a living again? Oh yeah, he's got one of the best jobs in the whole world, a NASCAR driver! He says he didn't have any fun last year? How about we swap jobs, Denny? I can guarantee you I didn't have any fun at my job last year. :D

I wasn't trying to make Denny look like a crack whore. I was just saying he doesn't look healthy. Maybe the racing has taken its toll on him.

Kahne?

LOL, same exact thing was said about Jr. Lets wait and see how true this statement is in about 2 years.

EXACTLY! Kahne is another "Merchandise pusher" in my opinion....I am pretty sure he isn't gonna jump straight in the 5 car and burn it down.

x10 Evernham fell apart right after Kasey got there, GEM was always a train wreck, RPM train wreck, Red Bull announces its shutting down. Its like people blame Kasey for these teams sucking

Does Denny still have his ride with Jordan Fish?

If not, there's the depression.

1) i'm not a hamlin fan by a long stretch.
2) i believe he's a helluva driver and will rebound.

10/4 If I can get the labtop up tonight, I will try to post some sweet Fish. Who knows Denny may be a member here, and the pictures might help him remember he is a male, and undepress hisself.

But at the moment I am posting on my phone, it will have to wait.

And I am just curious as to what Kasey has done that puts him on that "upper level"...

First off I admire KKfan for having so much faith in his driver. That being said, if Nascar were the WWE Kasey would be what we call a mid carder. He's decent enough but not main event material.

Both of these are EXACTLY the point I was trying to make. Him and Hamlin are a like in some ways I think....

Yep. Sorry kkfan, but Kasey makes A LOT of rookie mistakes.

When he started, I wanted him to do well and be the next Jeff Gordon. He needed a couple more years in Nationwide. Like Hamlin, Kasey folds like a lawn chair under pressure.

I'm just pissed about the way Red Bull treated Scott Speed. He was IN THE CHASE, and starting top-five every race... he would've won a race last year. Then, Red Bull signs Kahne and Speed suddenly forgets how to drive? It's bull****.

Even worse, Kahne's had opportunities to win four or five races this year, and he usually wrecks himself right out of it. Then there's the race he and Vickers were both running well and Kasey made a rookie mistake and ****ed Vickers right out of it. There's 15 or 20 guys who would seal the deal (or at least finish in the top three) if they were in the same position Kahne's been in several times this season.

Same story with Hamlin -- Pretty much every driver in every league of NASCAR would've sealed the deal. Hamlin ran out of gas at Phoenix, left with a still respectable points lead. Instead of going to Homestead and wrapping it up, he bad mouthed his team and said they cost him the championship at Phoenix. Then, being an immature brat, he wrecked himself and handed the championship to Johnson trying to win the championship in the first 50 miles of a 400 mile race.

Kurt's having a meltdown because he's being outrun by his teammate.

Denny's still having a mental meltdown after last year.

Kahne's always had difficulty "sealing the deal".
