26-10

This is Great News >> Nascar needs a Lift to the End of its Season!

And I can't wait to say "I Told Ya So" next year at this time! You Folks will love this new system after you see it in Action!

I was reading today >> No driver has ever been out of the Top 10 and actually won the championship!

don't care, have spent my last $$ on nastycar and their BS, You may love it fly but as you well know the majority DON'T !!
just goes to show they don't give a da*n about the fans it;s all about the $$$$$$$

:dual9mm:

I was reading today >> No driver has ever been out of the Top 10 and actually won the championship!
That to me isn't even the point!!!!!!!!! What does this say to the sponsor who is spending the money to have their name on the car of the 11th place, 12th place,16th, 20th, etc........ They won't have jack diddly said regarding where the driver they sponsor is in the race during those last 10 races.

Oh, and here's another scenario for ya! What is Nascar going to do when the majority of their fan base doesn't tune in because Jr. isn't in the top 10???? How about Tony Stewart? Jeff Gordon???? Ryan Newman???? etc. etc. etc........

God, I hope this is just someone shooting their mouth off! Please, I beg of you, let it NOT be true!!!!!!

I can only say two things:

1.) At least they will raise the speed requirements to get some of the wrecks off the course

and

2.) I hope you're right flyboy, I hope you're right.

To the point:

This crap is the silliest thing the sanctioning body has done in many, many years.

Roush winning the title must have REALLY shook the idiots up.

NASCAR just changed the points system

Man, those IRL jackets are looking good now....

No point in complaining about it. It appears to be a done deal.
I don't fully agree with it , but I am willing to give it a chance and see how it goes.
If sponsors go away due to this and tv networks start fighting over who gets what, then we will probably see the sport start losing popularity and fans. of which both mean losing money and lots of it.
I will give it a year and see what happens.

I will give it a chance before deciding whether I like it or not.

looks like they tweaked it where it isn't a top ten, its all drivers within a certain amount of points behind the leader...makes more sense, could end up with a tiny field though.

Its about time Nascar changed its "Sham of a Points System"

I never liked watching the top dog ride around back in 10th to remain consistent and not go for the win!

Back in 1985 >> Good Old Bill Won 11 races to DW's 3 and DW won the championship >> several more seasons we saw Bill and Rusty win a ton of races >> way more than Big E >> and they still lost the title >> I've never liked the old system and very glad Nascar is changing it!

I'm glad that NASCAR is awarding more points to each race winner, finally!I also liked the idea of raising the minimum speed of a race so as to keep down on the wrecks riding around the track!
Its good IMO that NASCAR is going to use a set number of points to qualify which drivers will be alive for the Cup.

I still don't like it,hope that NASCAR schedules a road course event within the final 10 races also,JMO

The NFL will still win the ratings battle IMHO ;)

I like the Road Racing stuff also! I hope they will eventually add Laguna Seca and maybe even Road Atlanta to the Current Schedule! Road Racing proves who the best guys in Nascar are!

As I said in the other thread, I know I am in the minority on this, but I like it. I definitely see the flaws in the new system, but I see a lot of flaws in the current system too. At least the new system adds a lot of excitement to the end of the season.

I also am looking forward to seeing these guys go for the win more often instead of just trying to get the most top 10's. Everybody knows Jeff Gordon is my favorite, but sometimes it drives me nuts to see Jeff just hanging back trying to stay in the top 5 instead of just driving balls-out for the checkered flag.

I still think that winning should have been a 25 point bonus. As it was, first and second place could end up with the same number of points from a race.

A bonus for winning and 34th on back get the same number of points...just to try to keep the "modifieds" off the track and out of the way.

NEXTEL Cup is no longer a sport, it's now a game.

I HATE this whole crappy idea, but for a change I agree on one point with Fly, Road Racing!!!!

NASCAR: Twenty million fans, and shrinking. At least by one.

I'm going to try and be open about the whole thing...

Maybe, just maybe it will be better...

VP Jim Hunter even said in the Nascar.com article that "if it doesn't work, we'll just change it back...."

If that's not commitment, I don't know what is

Besides...I've never really been 'championship' fan anyway...I usually enjoy the race for the action on the track, then worry about how it effects the points race later in the week....

I think you make a good point, unfortunately, there really isn't anything we can do to change it...so we might as well live with it and see how it goes. They might be on to something here, at least the way they tweaked it out from just cutting it off at tenth place, it could really make both ends of the race more exciting. Flyboy might be right.

to me this seems to be nascar striving to gain attention in the younger market, im 18 and have been followin gracing as long as i can remember, with this new sponsorship they can reach out to the younger market, something they couldnt do befor, this playoff thing is what there using trying to get their attention, of couse this all come at the expense of there proven loyal fan base, and driven by money, i hope the busch and truck championship ends up closer then the nextel cup at the end of the year, now that would be funny, im also against the points change

Next Year at this time >> I Will be saying "I Told Ya So"

Cause this points system is going to bring back some excitement to the Points chase!

Cause this points system is going to bring back some excitement to the Points chase!

How long have you been watching this sport? Cause there have been plenty of exciting points chases. How about 2002 where it literally came down to the last lap at Homestead? The year Kulwicki won? Or the year that many claim Mark Martin was robbed of the Championship?

The races are what has really gotten boring. Maybe the softer tires and reduced spoiler will help with that, but this plan doesn't address racing at all. In fact it will encourage drivers already inthe top 6-7 to lay back in the races coming up on the 26th.

I'll still watch football and flip back occassionally to see what's happening in the race. Football is a real sport that is worth your time. I now see why Joe Gibbs was willing to return to the NFL after 12 years. He wanted to be part of a sport, not entertainment wrapped up to look like a sport.

But yesterday I decided that NASCAR and NEXTEL have seen my last $$$$$. There will be 4 empty seats at Bristol and our tickets will go unused.

You may be right that this will add excitement, but rigging the sport and imposing penalties to those drivers who work hard in the first 26 races, isn't a good idea.

In real sports achievements aren't taken away. The underdog in an NFL game isn't spotted 7 points or given better field position on each posession. But that is the difference between NASCAR and real sports.

Edison >> I've been watching racing since I was 6 years old >> I saw the Pearson/Petty at Daytona on ABC Wide World of Sports!

Your Right >> we have had some great championship seasons with 1992 >> Alan Kulwicki, Good Old Bill and Davey Allison ...being the best I have seen.

2002 with Tony Stewart and Mark Martin was good as well! DW and Petty had a close one too!

Overall we have had more down seasons with drivers lapping around the track in 10th top 15th being consistent as to not lose the title. I was never in favor of that stuff >> and no fault to the drivers because they did what they had to do!

It Won't blow if your car or driver makes it into the Playoff!

how can they call it playoffs, everyone will still be there right? in a post season only the teams who worked hard make it, this everyone is supposed to still be there, also in playoffs teams are eliminated, are thery here? no, if this was a playoff cars would be seeded against eachother, and the higher finishing driver moves on to the next round, i dont like this idea either, but what nascar is doing far from a playoff, there trying to make a a dramatic sprint to the finish, thats all plain and simple to see, and for there benefit not the race teams. lets hope the buch championship is closer then the nextel cup, then we can right and bitch about this stupid change

heres an idea for you guys to try. the Nextel Challenge, a panel of drivers picks the 10 most challenging/ im portant races. have the regular points system for the year, with winner getting more points, i want it to be 50 points, and another seperate points system at those 10 tracks, maybe a modified formula 1 points sytem. this would be like the the winston million program, but instead of winning the race, just compete in them, whoever has the best points for those races say get $2, this would encourage going for the win, because of the design of the points system. what you guys think, just an idea, i like this idea more then the playoff sysytem.

My Tracks would be:
Daytona 500
Bristol
Lowes 600
Michigan
Indy
Sears Point
Richmond
Pocono
Darlington
Homestead

a wide range of tracks, and more encouragement to go out for the win.

I think some of you are overreacting. Just because a team is outside the top 10 in points doesn't mean they are going to just drive around outside the top 10 during those last races and let the championship contenders just go at it. They will still do the best they can and they will still get the same sponsor visability as they do now. I'm sorry but teams like Petty Enterprises that consistantly run at the back shouldn't get the same air time as the front runners. Why should the stakes just raise for the top 10? If the top ten has to try harder then the other teams will have to try just as hard to try and run towards the front for visability. The perennial back of the pack guys usually get more TV time if they do happen to run up front for a race. I remember when the AJ Foyt Harrah's Casino car ran up front the most of the day for a race and it was all the announcers were talking about. More drama will be great for the sponsors.

Also, If they are outside the top 10 that late in the year they may move up a couple of spots but they weren't gonna win the championship anyway. It's all about how you look at it. There is more at stake and It will provide more competitive and better racing throughout the field. The top 10 fighting for the championship and the rest of the field for camera time. What a story it will be if one of the lower teams beats some of the front runners and knocks them out of the championship. The stakes raise for everyone. No more conservative racing just to protect your points. If you snooze you could get beat.

I'm for it and I think it should be great for the fans. Nascar is never afraid to change things. If it doesn't work, they'll just change it back. Enough of the doom and gloom already, just give it a chance.

Whether you realize it or not, Nascar has already succeeded, look at the buzz and conversation about the point system. Whether you are for it or against it, there will be a buzz the whole season. Perfect marketing if you ask me.

flyboy,
it's something you just wouldn't understand. god i would love for dale and big bill to be here so i could hear their comments

Hawk 3270 Said it Best

They are now saying that it will NOT be the top 10 drivers >> It will be all the drivers that are within a certain point range of the Leader after 26 races!

i heard somewhere it was between 300 and 400 points.
guess what in 2003 the only person in would have been matt he was ahead of JR by about 420 points.

whoever came up with this idea is a bonehead and i would be willin to tell them that to their face BRIAN !!!!

DE 7 Don't worry...it'll be alright >> you will see the Light!
