The Spongebob 400 ??

I don't doubt they got good money for it, but I remember a good number of people being pissed off. The timing of it all was pretty poor too.
From what I remember, it was the NRA sponsored race that had some people upset. That was in April 2013 just four months after Sandy Hook, and a lot of people were sensitive to the NRA's sponsorship, since many were unhappy with the NRA's handling of the Sandy Hook situation.

That was the worst. I think a Senator even petitioned to have the race taken off of TV.

Sponge Bob's coming and he's pi$$ed.

I'd hate to have some kid in a Spongebob Outfit with me at the Victory Circle. It'd be like "Get the **** out of here, this is my moment."
Is that any worse than some guy in a 'Lug Nut' outfit?

Is a single race sponsored by a cartoon movie any worse than the Cartoon Network sponsoring a car for several season? One of the greatest racing T-shirts ever featured Scooby-Doo and Shaggy hanging out the windows of the CN Chevy, looking back at an approaching Black #3, with the caption "Ruh-Roh!"

Geez, it's just another movie tie-in. At least Spongebob, unlike other movie celebs, won't be singing the anthem, giving the command, waving the green flag, driving the pace car, or (worst of all) showcasing a "I'm just here for the promo" attitude and a complete ignorance of stock car racing.

If this race was at Rockingham or Wilkesboro, we'd be storming the gates to get tickets, sponsor be damned.

Name one kid that is going to stay for a 400 mile race. You want to get kids interested, get them interested in go-kart racing.

It may only just get a kid to remember there was a Nascar race. But that is still a good thing with residual potential.

At least the NRA 500 had a cool logo.

Honestly, the only problem with the NRA 500 was the timing, that was the only problem. Otherwise I doubt many people would've had a problem with it.

Bubbles being emitted from the pace car will do the trick, folks wont even complain about all the needless phantom cautions any more

And here's my biggest problem with this. While the demographic that this promotion is meant for, it certainly doesn't mix with the nonstop adds for Cialis and Viagra commercials that are ever present every Sunday during the race broadcast, promoting old man boners. The two don't (and shouldn't) mix.

I have never been shy in saying I enjoyed Nascar much more when it was primarily a southeastern sport. When I first started attending Bristol I think the seating capacity was around 37K and it and other Carolina tracks were more like local short tracks on steroids. People sounded like Ward Burton instead of Ward Cleaver and life was good.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: I never said the racing was better or anything remotely of that nature. I simply stated I liked it better and I understand others will think differently.

Bristol was better when it was asphalt and they ran bias ply tires.
And the racing in the late 80s and 90s in general was just as good as the current.

We cant go back to no pit road speeds for obvious reasons, but it was a more exciting time. I am sure some will snark the thought i dont anyone to die. Still the same it was more interesting.

There used to be a Cartoon Network sponsored car and we are still here.........

LOL
This is awesome. Thats it. I can die peacefully now.

Fwiw, the Nascar looney tunes races were badass too.

I can confidently say that kids ages 15-23 right now can still quote spongebob episodes & laugh their asses off from it. Its a cartoon thats stuck with us as apart of our childhood. Ive seen every episode & every movie. It just makes it even cooler now that its apart of the sport I love. IM READY IM READY

I look at it like this: NASCAR is something that everyone in the family can enjoy regardless of age. Old men and little children are both part of the family, so from an advertising standpoint, it makes sense to push products and entertainment aimed at both the older and the younger crowd.

Those commercials shouldn't be shown during "family" programming at all. The funny thing is, they don't air those commercials on the news channels or other old people programming. It's just sporting events and daytime and primetime television.

They used to be more subtle too -

LOL....................... "old people programming"

I hope they give out a SpongeBob Squarepants action figure as their trophy. I mean, it can't be any dumber and goofier than that stupid Miles the Monster thing at Dover.
Or a cowboy boots trophy.

Speaking of Texas, Spongebob in the winners circle would be better than those dumb cap guns. Nowhere else on the circuit does a driver look less comfortable than when holding those things in the air like a third-rate Yosemite Sam wanna-be.

Nascar commercials are probably as Vanilla as the standard or norm. If kids watch an NFL game with dad or any big network prime time with the family, I doubt that Nascars commercial line up will present any new complications.

I love the blonde lady with the British accent on the one commercial.

Yep the ones with the dude by themselves talking about it is creepy in comparison. Cialis clearly was better marketing prior to Viagras marketing discovering girls

Cialis commercials only flaw has been the image of him and her in two parallel bath tubs. Probably led kids to believe dual tubs was the ultimate thang.

As a survivor of cringe-worthy named events such as the "Go Bowling 400" and the "Party in the Poconos 400" I think most of us will survive this. I have a 12 year old son who has been to 5 Cup races and he also grew up on Spongebob. He's kinda outgrowing his old pal Spongebob but he thinks it's cool the Sponge is getting his own race, and he has friends who I know will as well. Some of these same kids in no small measure also got interested at least in the concept of racing through the Pixar "Cars" movies. He has at least two friends at school who are into NASCAR as much as he is. One of them is going to a race with us in June.

It can't hurt. Some new rookie stripe kids might even watch it if only for awhile. Not that six year olds are going to watch 400 laps but I know a lot of kids that age sure love cars and other vehicles and big machines. It's nothing more than exposure to a fresh audience. For old salty fans and purists, if your driver gets in the chase by winning it, all the better. Have fun with it and maybe don't take it so seriously. Tracks have mascots and every kid-friendly event imaginable to get kids interested and I don't see this as much different.
