2018 - Daytona 500 - Pre Race Thread

What difference does it make?
At Daytona it makes a difference if you are a fan of Thursday's qualifying races. Even though the charters have removed some of the suspense. Back in the day it was always exciting to see who might get into the 500. It was not unusual for drivers who did not normally or had never run NASCAR, make an attempt.

I think they attendance Thursday is going to be very sparse. The stands used to be packed.

It was fun watching an underdog try and make the race and sometimes they did and that is way different then what is going on this year.

As meaningless as they’ve become, they’re still racing. No need to eliminate races. If it’s become such a turnoff for some, the Olympics is an alternative for ya.

Anyone know what time the synchronized snow-boarding starts ? :D

The twins are useless, they should do away with these races.
They will eventually. Give it a few years. At some point, team owners that matter will get frustrated that they're paying to run an extra race for nothing but maybe up to 10 points and call for it to end, just like with Preseason Thunder.

Sad. I used to skip school to go to these or watch them on TV.

Haha I used to get "sick" every Thursday afternoon before the 500 too.

20 years ago, we had 58 entries at Daytona. 10 years ago, we had 53. Five years ago, 45. This year, it looks like 39 and a half (maybe).

I don't like this trend.
The money must be gone. I remember when a car got paid a nice sum just for running quals for this race. Funny how Nascar took the money off the stats now.

But....Everything’s Great! Nothing to see here....

I always thought the Twin 125’s were a better show than the Bud Shootout. If car count keeps declining how much longer until the 125’s are gone and replaced with just normal qualifying we get every week

Chase's car is horrendous looking. Not sure how I feel about the car with no ride height. Really hate the way they look that low to the ground.

Not really seeing the big speeds...192 MPH bracket is where the pole speed was last year.

LOL these Chevys are skewed out to the right BAD. Lookin like the old twisted sisters.

I don't even think you had to start. There was a pay out just for attempting to qualify.

I dont remember all the ins and outs but I do know that finishing dead last paid over 200K. The money must not make it worth it to try and get something together and make an attempt to get in and that is a bummer.

Now I admit that this seems kinda out there but maybe in the close future they will qualify for pit and for starting positions by draw or some other way. Not qualifying like they do now would save the teams some bucks over a whole year. Maybe they could qualify by playing beer pong or something fun hahaha.
