2018 - Daytona 500 - Pre Race Thread

so they bringing plates to slow it down???? :( i hope not!! i want to see them go faster hahaha.. are you going down to daytona?

Yup.....Nope, not this year on Daytona....You?

They only have 2 practices on Saturday leading up to Qualifying and then the Duels on Thursday. They wont be holding anything back, they dont have time.

Do they need a full lap to get what they need in practice?

They back off to hide their times. Floor it past S/F all the way to exit of 4 and lift I think....
They are going to be working on no ride height rules, changes in splitter and radiator pans. The cars are gonna be more then a handful to start so getting them comfortable to drive will be crucial and 2 50 minute practice sessions with an impound after you qualify wont allow you to play

Hope so.

I think these sessions will be a little more entertaining.
Yeah, they still are very entertaining but I really hate that we've lost the importance of these races that they once had. When everything is on the line to make the race by at least part of the field, things get even more entertaining.

52 cars showed up in 2015. ... There were 61 entries in 2007

Edit: 49 in 2015.....

Car's on the track..... tomorrow!

Larry McReynolds just said on nascar sirius xm that these guys are to friendly to each other, exactly what i been saying and been getting bashed for it.. in other sports these guys not texting after each game or apologizing on tv lol its suppose to be competition. Also he stated what kyle busch said and he agrees that this up and coming guys need to win.

Ya know, it's possible to be competitors on the track and friends off it.

I assume you also have problems with 'stick and ball' players on opposing teams renewing friendships before the start and shaking hands after the game is over. While all of this is entertainment to you and I, remember for these guys this is a job. A very well-paid job they likely enjoy, but a job none the less.

i didnt say that shaking hands before the game was a prob, i stated texting and calling each other after i think is a prob.. its competition i dont think you have to say sorry every time something happens on the track, thats all im saying. every time a reporter ask did you talk to so and so after the race. they always reply yes i reached out to him and we talked about and this and that.. Mcreynolds stated same thing i said . it would be better if these guys wasnt so buddy buddy he said in all his years in the sport his driver never reached out to another driver and he dont understand why they do it now...

In other sports they do act buddy-buddy in between plays and talk and and slap each other's asses though.

Except in hockey.

you watch other sports man .. you know exactly what im talking .. i like nascar to but these guys are to buddy buddy, yea they might do that to teammates but they not doing it to each other all the time and calling after game or texting after game and apologizing.

The reason they do it is to avoid incidents like Hamlin VS Elliott or Kenseth VS Lagano. In most sports you are not playing the same people every week, and if you cheap shot somebody, you may not see those people again for weeks or maybe a year. There's also a lot of retaliation in other sports that largely goes unseen, like punching a guy in the junk in the bottom of a pile on the football field. In NASCAR, it's all out there for the world to see, and they are driving a 3400LB 200MPH weapon, not wielding a fist or a foot or whatever. When I see a comment like McReynolds, I have to wonder what planet he lives on. If you wreck somebody by accident, I don't think it's too much to ask to own up to it and apologize for it. If you wreck somebody on purpose, for God sakes own up to it and at least give the victim an explanation.

they might do that to teammates
Remember, a lot of these guys have been teammates. A lot of them have been racing together for years. A few of them grew up together in the drivers' RV lot. Many of them live within a few miles of each other. And there's always the probability they're going to need each other's on-track help at restrictor plate races.

From my point of view, it isn't detrimental to the racing. It certainly never stopped Gordon and Johnson from running each other ragged at Martinsville. It looks to me like most drivers race each other the way they'd like to be raced. When one of them makes a habit of stepping in it, then he gets raced the way he's been treating others. Somebody remind me who got put in the wall at Homestead several years ago, very early Busch race for acting like an ass all season. Was it KyBu punting Kez when the whole garage knew it was coming, to the extent that there was a pool for which lap it would happen?

I've personally never had an issue with the driver code in NASCAR. The only thing I take issue with is when these guys actually do get a chance to get a hand on one another they fail to actually do anything after all of the acting tough up to that point.

The #1 reason that I love this sport and always have is that it's unique. It's completely unlike every other sport in the world, therefore I have no problem with the drivers operating in a completely different manner.

Sorry, not sorry. I really don't care about one driver apologizing to another. Makes it a heckuva lot more interesting to have disgruntled drivers. Rivalries are a good thing. They are few and far between these days.

How do they determine garage stalls for Speedweeks? Is it based on the previous season's points finish?

So with BK Racing going home we'll have 39 cars in the 500... less than a full field for the "super bowl" of NASCAR. I guess that's ok, after all Brian France says this kind of thing is happening to all sports now. After all, the Philadelphia Eagles won the NFL super bowl with only 50 people on their roster because of budget cuts. I guess fundamental competition elements like field size are part of the mystery and excitement that NASCAR brings to the track every week. Moments!
