NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

If you don't know where you are going, you'll end up someplace else.

I know I am interested in seeing what the next broadcast deal looks like for Nascar. So much will have changed since the current deal was signed that platforms and other things will likely be different.

It will be interesting on many levels. One is the shifting media landscape as you mention. Another is the effect an announcement of a new deal could have on those who have hinged their identity on shallow, ignorant doom and gloom analysis and predictions of NASCAR's demise. A pivot to "Yeah, but just wait until 2032, then you'll see" will be awkward and difficult.

that might call for another identity.

I used to think that Nascar receiving less in the next broadcast deal was a foregone conclusion. However with a number of years left on the current deal and a future landscape that is unknown I’m sitting on my hands.

Still waiting on that list of people who post under different screen names.

Hey, ESPN got to broadcast Formula1 for free in 2018. That was better than paying the $4 million NBC was paying to broadcast it.

Many players in the game come contract time, and they all need content. It will be good

The truth is none of us know what will take place. Nascar could wrangle a fantastic deal from a service not yet available or they may have to take a lesser amount then today. Either way Nascar is not going out of business.

some of us have been saying that same thing for years. Others have been making snarky remarks about sponsors, seat counts, save the children and all kinds of off the wall comments.

I keep reading this new message in this thread that “NASCAR isn’t going to go out of business”. Who stated that NASCAR was going to go out of business that this new mantra has appeared and needs to be expressed?

Again, I would really like to see the list of posters who use other screen names. Fingers crossed!

that's for us to know and for you to find out. Unless the poster wants to admit what they have continued to do? final answer.

No question that you are a passionate and knowledgeable race fan across many different disciplines. Being a race fan first it must be annoying reading about doom and gloom on here and the often dismissive tone Nascar is spoken of elsewhere.

dpk had a good post the other day about Nascar and things changing. Between that and not knowing the future there is a lot up in the air.

especially from posters who's sole purpose is just that. And now they crawfish. I had a thief in the prison I used to go to say to me, ya know I used to steal anything that was loose. If it was bigger than that I would lay down beside it and claim it. There are plenty of people on the outside that don't know they are thief's. It isn't annoying, it is repetitious, usually a lie, and very easy to spot.

JMO but I think the saying “you can’t fight city hall” comes into play. By that I mean if the mods and admins are ok with a member and his posts there is nothing that can be done by us. Right or wrong I don’t think people have to be honest or factual which is a shame but it is how it is.

I have PM’d the mods about some things and some they have agreed with and some not. Recently I requested the term “deathbedder” be retired as it was predominantly being used as a personal insult and anytime the user didn’t agree with the receiver. As far as I know calling someone a deathbedder is fine as I never heard a word about it. In all practicality a person being called a deathbedder should be able to call the user a Pollyanna or something like that. I’m gonna pass on it as it ain’t worth the exploding heads and rancor.

As stated I'm interested too. Always interested. If the ratings continue their slide the new contract will make things very interesting in NASCARland.
I don't know if they will slide as much as they have already...but there is the potential for some of the same. One of the reasons cited has been the loss of Jr., Stewart, Gordon in a short period of time. Well, before the next contract is signed we'll likely have lost Johnson, Harvick, KuBusch, maybe some other bigger names that carry large fan support from being around during the boom years.

We have such a great number of very nice young men who are going to be the leaders in this sport in a very short time. Driver fans won't leave as much as they will gravitate to these drivers.
Already I am seeing posters take an interest in them and like me they add them to the list of favorites. My name is Team Penski and I now have 2 champions. Sure looking forward to adding Blaney to make it 3. I figure he is 2 seasons away from being a challenger. :D

A remarkable statement.
Unlike Twitter and some other social media platforms, R-F is a community of repeat members who visit these threads often. When a member is dishonest or disingenuous, it tends to become obvious to the others, who call out the offender to hold them accountable... or just ignore them.

Some people lock their profile page to hide their post history. Others log in under a new user ID and claim to be a newbie. Both ways of escaping accountability inevitably fail quickly. Because R-F is a community, not an endless stream of drive-by visitors. That's why I like it here.

Absolutely! Nobody has ever said that...And nobody is rooting for that.

But predicting further drops in ratings, if NOTHING CHANGES, it's not being "doom and gloom". It's just being realistic.
Only silly people behave in the same way but expect different results. And that's exactly what NASCAR is/has been doing...

Please....spare us this analogy because it isn't a good one. There are many people here who are passionate fans, myself included who see the reality of the state of Nascar and don't sugarcoat it.

Yes, I'm one of those passionate fans and I do see the reality of the state of my chosen sport. Conversely, I also see the reality that knocking my
head against the ivory towers of NASCAR begging to go back to the "good old days" will just earn me sore spots on my head.
Change, one way or the other, comes to every thing. Every sport has made changes. I think the one thing that NASCAR has done is change
too many things too fast.

I'm all for change for the good, but like you said too many changes aren't good. Just my opinion, but the biggest mistake I think Nascar made was the Chase and trying to create a 7th game scenario...it just doesn't work for Cup. It isn't done on the local racing level of Nascar, there is a reason for that and that's racing is all about being good throughout the season not just winning once and being eligble for the "playoffs".

The “things change” card gets played a lot with Nascar and it is justifiable. Often times Nascar makes a bad change they try and correct it with a series of more bad changes. Nascar has made mainly poor choices and changes in the past 20 years and the fans have voted with feet, wallets and eyeballs.

The ONLY way Nascar is going to improve is to give LESS but really improve what they give.

I think this absolutely NAILS IT to increase quality.

And imo, to accomplish this, they need to end their season in late August before NFL hits, no playoffs gimmick, 26 to 28 race schedule, no track twice NONE, no meaningless all-star races.

I am fine with stage racing since it rewards speed, overall race performance, and qualifying well.

I'll never understand the call for less of something that you like. :idunno:.

Do I want to watch a re-run of my favorite movie occasionally? Yes. Do I want to watch a re-run of my favorite movie back to back? No.

LESS is MORE my friend ;)

any time I see somebody upset about auto racing extending into the concussion ball season, uh nah. To show ya the difference, when Keselowski said they need to race 50 times a season and have mid week races, my first thought was hell yeah. :D

You never have to watch something you like back to back...but isn't it nice that it is there at your finger tips so that you have a choice? Just because there is less quantity doesn't guarantee there will be better quality.

There would be some advantages to shortening the season though. Say for example the schedule got contracted to a 28 race season ending on Labor Day Weekend....there would be fewer races that teams would have to secure sponsorship for, it would make the individual races more meaningful since there would be fewer of them, NASCAR would be the only major sport to have their playoffs in July and August (though they might have to compete with the Summer Olympics and World Cup every other year) instead of having their playoffs trounced in the ratings by the NFL every year, drivers and teams would get to be with their families more, and a 5 month offseason would build a lot more anticipation for each new season than a 3 month offseason.

I love NASCAR, but I have to admit I get a little burned out on it by the end of the season. 7 months of racing every year would still be plenty IMO. I would welcome a 21-race regular season followed by a 7-race/12 driver playoff.

People seem to be so concerned with Nascar's season overlapping with the NFL season. That's another thing I don't get. The two have coexisted for as long as I've been following the sport. I watched the sport grow in my lifetime only to see it go back in a direction that it once was. The NFL isn't to blame. Fans haven't become less interested in the sport because of the NFL. They haven't become less interested because of the season's length either. Every single friend of mine that was once a lifelong fan of this sport has lost interest due to the extreme changes that it's gone through over the years but they're still watching the NFL on Sunday's. Blaming the NFL for Nascar's failure's is a misguided effort. Same goes for the season's length. This sport used to begin its season in mid January and end in late November yet it still seemed to grow all while it coexisted with the NFL.

Changes for the sake of change have been the demise of this sport. The Chase being the biggest of them all. It's the elephant in the room of change. The sport has been in a downward spiral since its implementation. The Chase is now in its 5th, 6th or maybe even in its 7th iteration. With each change the sport continues downward in attendance and home viewing.

People are just going to have to come to the realization and accept that this sport will eventually rightsize itself to a new norm. They've pushed the fan away from the sport that once supported it. The fan that used to bring others with him/her to the track creating a new generation of fans. The older fans seem to be the butt of many jokes but they are the ones that built this fanbase. Most any of us that are fans of this sport were taken to their first race by someone that was most likely an older fan. They aren't getting the older fans back to the track in turn losing that potential new fan. Many alienated fans have simply given up on the sport. They aren't attending or watching and they aren't coming back.

As far as drivers spending time with their families. I don't really concern myself with that any more than they are concerned with how much time I spend with my family. They know what they've signed up for and they get paid a pretty penny for doing what they do.

I take it with a grain of salt. And it always seems to start around the time of concussion ball season, imagine that. Many who want a shorter season are the darlings of the stick n ball threads. It seems to be something the crossover fans want, and I don't frankly see the problem of a longer season having much to do or somehow a shorter season being the savior of declining attendance or any other reason some work hard to come up with. For example the WoO the leading dirt racing series has a season as long, starts in early Feb, and goes until the middle of November and they continue to be a viable racing series. I say football fans love your sport and don't be messing with our racing, go get another TV, do something. :D

Just saying, sometimes less is more.

When I first started following NASCAR in the late 80’s, yes the season ran until November, but there were only 29 races on the schedule, many of them in the same general geographic region. I get why they expanded to 36 during the boom, but I just don’t know if there are enough dollars or interest to support that many races anymore. Even the top teams in the sport are struggling to find enough sponsorship to cover all 36 races.

And I do believe the NFL overlap is something that should be avoided if possible. NASCAR is the only sport I can think of whose viewership actually declines once their playoffs start. And I don’t think that can be blamed entirely on the chase/playoffs, even in the pre-Chase era there was always a pretty significant drop off in ratings after football started.

I'm a huge sports fan and not just in size? :D There is no off season in my house for sports. I watch Nascar, NFL, NHL, MLB, NCAAF, NCAAB, PGA & NCAA T&F. I also attend or used to attend many of these same sports. There's room for all of them in my life. None taking interest away from any other and each and every one of them cross over with one another. I watch what I like and don't watch what I don't like. It's simple really.

yeah so why all the bunk about a shorter season. There is a lot of negative on the stick and ball forums, and as far as I am concerned don't watch the races, but don't be whining about a shorter season. But they always do about this time every year.

Saw the less is more argument in another post. In my eyes less will always be less. Only more is more. ;)
