I think Harvick gets better every week. I thought he was excellent in Texas Xfinity race.

I love DW and he has served the sport well - but he doesn’t have the same command that guys like Benny Parsons had. Most of DW’s technical analysis is stuff we already observed 10 laps ago. I’m not gonna insult the man, I appreciate all he has done. But I’m ready for to booth to move on.
 
Something interesting has developed yesterday regarding the DW story. Many of the Fox people have rallied around DW. A number of people have taken shots at Jenna Fryer and her story about how he should hang it up. Judging from the comments, it's as though somebody is trying to encourage DW to hang it up, but I don't know if he's going to do that after this season. It's like somebody is turning the screws on him to get out now.

I think jenna fryer totally missed the mark here. I do think many nascar media people and others visit this site to gauge public sentiment but in this case its clear she didn't come here. YES I have heard the people around here for years say they could not stand DW. but if you look through this whole thread from the beginning. I think by and large the vast majority will miss DW. I dare say even those that complained for years. I wasn't one of them BTW I have always loved DW and said so here frequently. DW is a polarizing figure but I always sensed when he was actually going to step down he would be greatly missed even by the detractors. I also think the sport has lost so many of its personalities recently. Tony stewart recently said the sports drivers aren't characters anymore essentially. Much of what made us fans of drivers was their story and how they got there. Having ties to some rich parents, a special hook up with a company, etc. that doesn't make these guys interesting. that is what is missing. losing DW that loses yet another storied character. I think all of us have disliked certain drivers at certain times but when they have left we miss them. I was never a fan of carl edwards or matt kenseth, mainly because they were roush drivers, But as time passed and their careers ended, I can say I sure miss those guys on the track. I was very excited to see kenseth back last year. carl and matt both have stories that got them to nascar. Heck carl edwards handed out business cards and wondered around just chomping at the bit to drive anything. He didn't come from money. to the detractors DW if you are listening just show him your ...........

As much as we complain about Fox, I still think their broadcasts are much better than NBC’s. I dread having to hear that crew constantly talk over each other.

Another thing I don’t like about NBC is how they constantly slobber all over Dale Jr. If you follow NASCAR on NBC on social media at all, you’ll see that most of their content is related to Dale Jr in some form or another. And WAAAYYY too much was made of that “Slide Job” call....you’d think it was right up there with Al Michaels’ “Do you believe in miracles?” call from the 1980 Winter Olympics to hear NBC tel it.
 
IMO a member of the media has a right to report what he/she feels is significant to the sport even if it hurts. Example: Nobody should hold back on Brian France. He did what he did, and left himself open for a roasting. HOWEVER, Fryer's piece is basically an opinion piece, and she made her choice--which was disrespectful and void of fact. She rides a big boat of attitude from time to time on social media. She wanted a splash, and loves to let everybody know that she couldn't give a ****. DW didn't have that coming. Wonder if this might be career defining for Fryer. I am betting the fallout is big.
 
I think she is the one who trashed Alonzo running Indy if I am not mistaken. That wasn't pretty either
 
DW was brash as a youngster coming in to the Cup series. He could back it up behind the wheel. I think Cale was the one who named DW (Jaws). He ran his yap... a lot. But the cat could flat out wheel a hot rod. Three titles in five years ain't nothing to sneeze at. I think he's been good for the sport for forty plus years now. I hope if and when he leaves it's on his terms, not the Fryers gals opinion. He's done more for stock car racing in one year than she'll ever do. Plus he's the last best link to the past. Hang tough DW, you still have a ton of fans..Boogity boogity boogity!!!
 
I just read Jenna’s piece after stumbling upon the backlash on social media. She’s not wrong at all, I’d be okay with DW hanging it up and bringing a Crew Chief in to the 3rd guy in the booth( btw she floats Harvick or Knaus taking DW’s place which I don’t get at all because both have said they want to keep at it for a while more.) Saying that, the way she went about getting her point across was terribly done, she threw many cheap shots at DW....example being, comparing the end of his driving to now in a veiled attempt to say he’s hanging on too long. I wish we got prime 70-80’s DW right now, no way she’d escape unscathed. Instead of everyone in Fox sticking up for him and taking her to task, DW would do it himself and it’d be glorious.
 
Jenna vs Kurt. lmao. “Pull your Twitter, pull your Facebook.” For as good as some media coverage is, we do have some who are trash at covering this sport.
 
There are a lot of people coming to DW's defense on this. It has been interesting to watch all week.
 
After reading various reactions I can actually see both sides of this. Yes he's done a lot for the sport, both in and out of the car, and is a hall of famer. With that he does deserve a large amount of respect for what he has done, but on the other hand how long do you keep a guy around based on what he's done in the past and not their current performance? IMO its time for him to step down and I think if he hangs on much longer he may do more damage to his reputation than anything. I feel he also hung on too long in the car and only damaged that portion of this career, like I said in an earlier post when I started watching he was way past his prime and my only memories are him running around the back and struggling to make the field. Had I never watched him race I would of just looked back in the record books and said "that guy was a heck of a driver".
 
I have heard of Jenna Fryer but I am not familiar with any of her work. I read the piece and it struck me more as something you write when you have run out of ideas or material.

I had the utmost respect for DW as a driver as he was a fierce competitor and a premier wheel man. I have no axe to grind with DW as an announcer as I normally have the sound muted when watching Nascar. It isn’t that I don’t like him or those in the Fox booth more than it is they don’t provide value to me.

I hope that DW will retire from the booth on his own terms whenever that time comes.
 
Kenny said the word dumb quiet a bit and in keeping with that I’m sure the families of Neal Bonnett, Benny Parsons and Ned Jarrett himself will be happy to know DW blazed a trail for them. Dumb!

I haven't been able to find her old article about Alonso anywhere, but plenty from pillars in the IndyCar community upset about it..Junk. Nothing has changed here. Both of her articles were terrible for the sports and frankly not needed. I really don't think the AP needs a sociopathic type of writer, who not only lacks compassion for the sport or the players, but is dead wrong with her mentally twisted assessments of both individuals as her continued criticisms by more respected individuals point out. I believe she needs to go, she is bad for the sport she is getting paid to support.

It was just ignorant. She didn't understand the significance of a global star like Alonso racing at Indy, and didn't get that looking at F1 driver stats doesn't reveal the full picture of Alonso's 'relevance', because the cars are 80% of the game.

Her opinion of DW is actually not uncommon. But she phrased her criticism too bluntly for some tastes, especially when DW was already known to be on the way out. She also was completely incorrect to rope Mike Joy into her negative portrait of the Fox telecasts. But that's her opinion. I think those piling on her would be better suited to simply dispute her claims and lack of good judgment, not to essentially say "How dare you criticize a legend!"

My opinion of Fryer generally is that she does a decent job of reporting when she stays in her lane. But her lane is rather narrow, and she would do better to stay out of the opinion game, as many racing journalists covering the same beat have much greater motorsports knowledge.
 
Much as I have grown tired of him over the past few years, I am going to miss him as well, but its time, and I wish him the best in is up coming retirememnt , he has earned it.
 
I always enjoyed DW’s enthusiasm and yes, even his “Boogidie” cheer.

He’s been off his game the season and I think he knows best and will walk off not the sunset mostly intact. Thanks DW.

Jeff Gordon has been a good “straight man”, so a “character” in the booth would be fine by me.
 
I know how much DW likes the sport so I hope he finds a way to still be part of it if he so desires to. Maybe a weekly spot on one of the nightly Nascar shows or a weekly appearance on a Sirius show. Something along the lines of what Ray Evernham did.

DW should have transitioned into a pit reporter role a few years ago because he would have excelled in that role much like Dr Jerry Punch. I will miss DW as a broadcaster but firmly believe his time was up 5 years ago. Hopefully his replacement is either Ricky Craven or Kyle Petty
