Indy crowd looks like a rain delay

but Im not sure Indy 500 drew 300 K this year either. Like I posted above earlier...... if we are going to eliminate Indy because of attendance then using that logic we need to eliminate other tracks that dont sell out and look like eyesores on TV as well. My opinion is this: The Premier Stock Car Series in the world NEEDS to be racing at the most famous race track in the world and especially if you want to be taken seriously. Case closed, end of discussion. The prestige of winning at that place should be emphasized over tired and frankly lazy arguments of attendance, especially when what Indy drew yesterday is more than some tracks draw on a good day, that alone makes any argument to take this cathedral of motorsports off the schedule irrelevant.

Man, it's just a deathbedder rant. It doesn't have to make any sense. Most don't upon examination. I enjoyed the race myself, I haven't any way to change this or that. My advice is if the attendance troubles ya, move on to the next race that works for ya instead of whining about it which does absolutely nothing but blowing hot air.

That is the same link I put in my post #21.:) I agree with you 100%, and as long as it's on the schedule I will be watching it. Like I have said in the past I don't even pay much attention to the amount of empty seats when I'm on the starting line at a drag race...and I have damn sure never been embarrassed if it's not a sellout. I'm there to make a living and at the other racing series I'm strictly there to enjoy it.

The weather was perfect and the colts were in LA without a legit qb. This is the fullest they’ll ever see the track. No one is showing up to the road course, not even Indy car fans show up to the stupid Grand Prix, and they tried their best to emulate Daytona this year. At this point, it just needs to be scratched from the schedule. Even the tv ratings were on par with a rain out, it isn’t a crown jewel in any way, anymore.

Not unlike whining about a thread that clearly discloses its content in the title.

I'm having a little trouble understanding why IMS would want to pay Nascar to hold a race at their track if Nascar can't draw at least 65,000 fans when Indy can draw 300,000 fans at their own race. The Brickyard survived for many years with out Nascar.

I am thinking the TV contract money is the big deal.

It seems to me they should have tracks paying nascar for the sanctioning and the ability to hold the race at their track.
I'm pretty sure tracks DO have to pay an application fee to host a Cup race, including the ISC tracks, along with X, Trucks, and other touring series. It's an investment leading to the TV money they get back. Modern tracks can't operate on ticket sales alone. All sports make more money from TV revenue than from ticket sales, and have for a decade or more; most facilities can't survive without it. This is particularly true of major race tracks that host only a few events a year and aren't getting support from taxpayers.
The rest of the stands were empty with maybe a few people that probably moved in those areas to get away from everyone and watch the race from another vantage.
Anyone who's been to Indy once knows that the best views are from the corners. Those sections sell out first but they weren't as visible on TV as the front grandstands. That's a pity because if they had been seen, we'd probably not be having this conversation.

They just need to do something to make the race "special" again. Making it the cutoff race before the playoffs was a good try, but not good enough. Moving it to July 4th weekend is a mistake IMO. The track doesn't have lights, so I really don't think it's worth moving Indy's date there at the sacrifice of Daytona's Firecracker 400.

If they raced there in early June or late September, I might consider going back. If the Xfinity series raced at IRP the day prior and they offered free Xfinity admission with the purchase of a Brickyard ticket, I would definitely go back.

IDK what the answer is, I'm sure everyone will have a different suggestion, but nascar needs to get creative. Taking Daytona's date is not a good solution IMO.

It's a sad state of affairs when some people judge how good a race is by how many fans are in the stands and they ain't one of em. On a personal note, if I looked at the track from a spectator's standpoint, 2 1/2 mile track blocked off with a huge island in the middle wouldn't be my cup of tea, but watching at home I can see the whole thing.
You ought to try spotting that sucker from the Pagoda.

I wouldn't go back if they offered a Brickyard ticket free with paid admission to IRP.

Agreed.

No no no and no. Cup doesn’t belong on the road course and Xfinity should be at IRP. Why is this so hard? Move the race on a Saturday in early June or a Saturday in September , this past weekend in September works. Then move Xfinity to IRP on the Friday night before the Brickyard. I think this would rectify the problems and then the mob can go find another track to try to take off the schedule due to “attendance”.

If NASCAR wants to do a double header I'd run the Cup cars at IRP On Friday Night then roll over to The Brick yard for the 400 on Sunday. The race they would put on at IRP would be insane. Beats 2 Pocono races

The Xfinity race is probably more detrimental to the weekend than it is beneficial, despite them moving the race and the ill-fated Grand-Am and subsequently IMSA event to IMS to help boost ticket sales. Most everyone hates that Xfinity got moved away from IRP and IMS 'stealing' that race only created more dissonance with NASCAR fans, IMO. If it were feasible and Truck and Xfinity got the IRP events back it'd probably at least get closer to feeling like a big weekend again and generate more interest both locally and nationally from those who might want to attend.

Running the road course wholly defeats the purpose of running there at all. F1 raced there because it was the U.S. Grand Prix, the lone race in the country at arguably the most famous race venue in the country. IndyCar races there because 500 qualifying was neutered through the years and reduced from two weekends to one and the idea was the Grand Prix would help kickoff the Month of May and start building up interest towards the 500.

NASCAR would race there...as a fallback plan? That's not any sexier than the 400. The oval makes up the vast majority of the history there and if the big stock car oval series doesn't run the oval it makes no sense to bother going there at all.

It's the same bull**** every year. This year showed an increase in attendance. Why? because the racing is better that's why. They don't have the heavy hitters like Sr, Gordon, Johnson and Stewart racing head to head, multiple champions, in their prime drawing a crowd. Nobody but maybe Elliott has the fan base those guys had and he is nobodies rival like all of the above were.

that is the most pathetic non rain delay crowd I have ever seen. Including even at a nxs race. What is there 10k people there? That crowd is embarrassing. If that is the crowd nascar has no business going to Indy any more

An Indianapolis rain delay is Ashley Judd standing on pit road in the rain. Sweet Memories.

Pretty sure there was more people there than at Darlington.. it can look scarce when you have 60-70k in a facility that seats 235'000.. keep in mind IMS is the largest outdoor sports facility on the planet.

The two times I went to the Brickyard (03, 07) it was packed.

I don't follow hollywood, can anybody tell me what the deal is with Ashley Judd

Discussing her issues at length would probably get the thread or the comments banned, but I'll just throw this out there as a starting point: In February 2006, Judd entered a program at Shades of Hope Treatment Center in Buffalo Gap, Texas, and stayed for 47 days. She was there for treatment of depression, insomnia, and codependency
