2020 GEICO 500 Pre-Race Thread

Wnat an asinine argument. You really think a sport’s start time is enough motivation for anyone to move their livelihood?

I can take it either way, but unless it is a night race which I enjoy the most, I don't have a problem with it starting at 9.00 am on the Westcoast. I don't make any other plans on race day and I'm up early so I'm usually just waiting for it to come on anyway. Plus when it comes on later then as soon as it's over everyone that is not on the Westcoast goes to bed and there is no one left to discuss the race with...and then when I get up the next day everyone is at work and by the time they get home from work I have already forgot what I wanted to discuss. :)

eh who cares, I call it the thick headed strawman argument..It goes nowhere, means nothing, but it continues to appear. Some can't figure out it is on TV time..

I don't think the Eastcoast, Midwest, or Southern NASCAR fans realize how lonely it can be here on the Westcoast after a race is over and everyone has gone to bed. Yes we have awesome weather and gorgeous well enhanced California girls here, but that's just not enough to keep us entertained. We need 24 hours a day NASCAR fans to banter NASCAR topics back and forth with after a hard day of viewing racing. I don't understand why everyone thinks they need 8 hours of sleep when 4 would be sufficient. :(

Sigh. I wish good year would come up with a high speed rain tire for these guys. use the road race package for lights and wiper.

that would be wild to see

My sig says it all.

They have to invent the windshield wiper first.

Next time you’re on the highway in a rainstorm, run right behind a semi at 70 mph for 5 minutes.

F1 does it ... It just angers me is all aunty. I think the tech exists....hell we can do a moonshot we can figure this out.

I recall Xfinity and IndyCar races where I've seen rain tires used. They're entertaining in a 'Wacky Races' sort of fashion, but they're rarely competitive. They're little more than a way for the sanctioning body to get laps run. I think IMSA's races are the only ones I've seen with competitive on-track passing.

EDIT: I won't watch F1 run on a dry surface, much less on rain tires. :p

I used to fly small aircraft. They put a coating on the windshield that at 100 mph the rain beaded off.
Couldnt something like this be used for super speedways?

How? By defying physics?

No tech exists that provides visibility in a pack of cars traveling at 185 mph on an OVAL track.

How does that help you see through the 20’ high wall of water in your face?

I don't think visibility is as much of an issue as traction.
In this case, you CAN hit what you can’t see.

I love it when people compare going to the Moon with other scientific endeavors.

Sure, it can be figured out. Are there foreign governments with better rain racing technology than 'Muricuh is fielding? Then good luck getting the government to dedicate billions to the task.

I will leave this for others.

NASCAR has never showed up at any oval track fully equipped to race in the rain. They never will.

The rooster tails would be severe, mud flaps? I dont know. Hate to see races delayed is all.

I don't know anyone who likes it.

I confess I don't get why it bothers some people as much as it seems to. I can understand if someone is there with tickets and hotel rooms and vacation days on the line. Otherwise? Eh, it's just sports.

It's a waste of our time.

@aunty dive

I heard your voice speaking on this link. Destroyer of my dreams lol..

No, it's entertainment. I don't get why some work themselves into a frenzied lather over something being rescheduled. Annoyed, sure, esp when NASCAR is slow to announce whether they're going to reschedule or try to finish.

Unless they abandon the southern tracks entirely, the chance of rain is there basically all season. They won't run the southern tracks in the winter and compete with NFL playoffs for TV viewers. They can't run the northern tracks in the early spring or late fall because of the possibility of snow. When do the unhappy people suggest the southern dates go should be run?

Some are saying the weather forecast for today is worse than yesterday but I’m not seeing it on the radar.

Was supposed to go fishing today but I know if I do they’ll get the race in.

I think it's less about the date than the time of day. I don't care honestly if the networks or NASCAR is responsible, but trying to run a race in Miami at 3:30 is dumb as ****.

OK zoomed back a bit.

There’s a big-ass storm cell over Nawlins headed NE towards the track but it doesn’t look like it’s moving fast enough to effect the race.

Sure wish they’d opted for a noon or 1pm local time start.

Okay, then you're back to the networks. They set the start times, not NASCAR. If we as fans want live, complete coverage of all races on the schedule, that's the price we have to accept. Otherwise we're back to edited versions of a handful of race, and those are still going to be at times dictated by the networks.

Me, I'd rather see the whole race on Monday than 'highlights' on Sunday.

EDIT - Let's not forget that if it wasn't for the tracks profiting from TV money, we wouldn't have racing at all this spring and summer.

Or the networks could check the weather.

Southern dates should be done at Noon! I can almost guarantee that I'll have sunshine from 9-3 PM everyday here in Charleston, but you get your pop up storms off either the seabreeze or the elevation in the Midlands and a chance of rain.

Not sure of the weather, but keep yourself hydrated!

And not as many TV viewers either.
