Practice/No Practice Thread

Random draw Qualifying bothers me. I want Qualifying back big time.

Cup Practice, I don't miss 3 sessions, but I miss not having at least 1 session just to see the cars on track, it was sort of recap of last week's race too, general concerns, where everyone stands, seeing the speed charts how some unload, if they get faster, consecutive lap charts, adjustments, educational for new viewers. It's good build-up story anticipation for the race.

Adam is going nowhere. Two Championships in five seasons when there were 0 before then probably guarantees that. Adam does plenty of thinking for himself, but Kyle gives a ton of information. How do you think that would go down if a CC told him to shut up, and he'd take it from here? The car has been just fine at the end of races, but Kyle has not been able to live with it long enough to maintain decent track position. They will get something better figured out, but I bet they are both really pissed that they will have to live with this package for another year.
Cole Pearn was locked in too.

I agree Adam has been the best CC Kyle has ever had and Hamlin is running great. A change would be insane, Kyle and Adam will figure it out.

I think eventually there may be one practice session built in, perhaps a return to qualifying. Frankly I'd enjoy having a blind draw for all starting positions (or at least for positions 1 thru 30). Why not? Creates a lot of intrigue and challenges for the faster cars.

Times are a changin' for sure. When they can get regular fans back in the stands consistently they will want something to bring them to the track more than just race day.

They must be saving a bundle. Wonder if they'll have a special qualifying draw for the playoff people.

I'm seeing drivers from smaller teams liking this decision. I don't mind it, especially if it help the teams and keep everyone safe.

Gotta do something, random draw doesn't seem too fair for the championship race at least. I'd argue it's not fair for the playoffs at all but whatever creates drama. Maybe they just let all 4 start up front like last year come Phoenix.

I'm fine with this and I'm sure they'll do things a bit different come playoff time. I would assume something along the lines of playoff cars drawing for the forward positions in groups of four by points. That would seem fair enough.

No practice for the first road course race at Daytona is idiotic! :booya:

I do like the ‘no practice’ stuff that’s going on...

BUT I would make the one exception for the Daytona RC... since it’s a new configuration for a lot of the cup drivers, meaning most of them have probably not turned a lap on it in any type of car... I’d allow the smallest window of time nascar would see fit, just to allow the drivers to look for their braking points and such things like that.

Exactly!

He left on his own.
Doesn’t mean Adam won’t either. Don’t get too comfortable. Dale Inman, Kirk Shelmerdine, Ray Evernham, Jeff Hammond, Cole Pearn. The best are always standing on the shoulders of giants, sometimes they jump off.

If they’re adamant on not practicing at all I would not be surprised to see them add a chicane in the interest of safety. No word yet according to Bob but it’s under evaluation I guess.

I know that my buddy @StandOnIt will say something snarky, but honestly, my wish for practice and qualifying has nothing to do with KFB. I love the build up to the race during a weekend. I love the engineering/tuning stuff. The cars are never on track all at once until go time. Amazing and crazy at the same time, but it is what makes a weekend special to me. I get that this is what we need to do during COVID--I guess, I mean if COVID is the concern, stop going into the heart of the infection--but I digress....I just hope that it isn't something that NASCAR feels is an option moving forward.

We have done so much in the name of "great racing" that we have literally stripped everything away that made big time NASCAR what it is. I find this unfortunate.

It's about money, I'm guessing the smaller teams are liking this with having to bring less personnel and one car to the track. Teams will save money, it will be exciting for the fans, but I feel for the drivers jumping into the unknown. I just feel from a safety standpoint, let them have some time to practice on the Daytona RC.

Also, if they add another chicane off of turn 4 that will be good, but very awkward for them all. Not to mention, Bob said NASCAR has not decided on what aero package to run. I feel as if they will run the original proposed small spoiler with the 750 to engine, but if the extra chicane is a no go, I feel as if they will go with the 550 package.

That's just my amateur speculation though.

I go with the money savings as the main reason but also it looks good to the politicians and the public at large because of the large reduction in personnel that not having practice provides in those states that are restricting movements. The good part for me is that it is a hell of a lot better to have three races a week instead of three days of practice and one day of racing.

As much as I’d like to see it, I don’t think they’ll let them bomb it around that place with the usual less downforce/more HP short track/road course package - unless they add the chicane. None of the tracks that use that right now have as much sustained speed as Daytona would.

No chicane and 550 HP I could see. I really just want to see them run the whole circuit unchanged regardless of what the package is.

Exactly.

I appreciate the fact that they got up and running and are still at it. We're the most fortunate sports fans out there.

I guess Boyer has to be added to the list of thumbs down on the no practice/qualifying. I think he has bombed himself out of the top 12, I think he was in there

I'm with you. Especially as a frequent attending fan. Always work practice/qualifying days into my trips.

My understanding is that the 750 was chosen over the 550 on road courses for torque characteristics. Thinking the 550 would be lame off of a slow corner....but then again, I thought Goodyear would need time to develop a tire for that type of a track....guess not. Now, I am waiting for the North Wilkesboro championship race announcement.

Without practice and quals, what do they need the fan zone for?

New normal.

This is far from the only aspect of living life altered by the viral storm.
