Darlington Cook Out Southern 500 Pre-Race Thread

I can assure you that NASCAR’s key younger demographic don’t give a rats ass about ivory tower celebs. But NASCAR is desperate to attract the tiktok teens. Thats not the demo that wants to chill on a Sunday afternoon with a cold beer and wings.
I'm not assured :idunno:

First they'll have to educate me on who Mario Lopez is. Does he already know which end of the wrench goes in the window, is he learning as he goes, or is he just cashing a check?
case in point. I don't know who the hell he is either, but the younger demographic does..( and TV says)

Lololol bocci ball? Who tf is in that executive office approving this.

A universally beloved ad that can easily be reproduced/expanded upon to show the lead-up to the playoffs and an explanation. But no, bocci ball lol.

Now that's good advertising. Creative, exciting, visual. Sticking Mario Lopez with a Bocce set to have at it, is well not.

LOL if they're truly trying to educate all these alleged new fans on the playoffs that video does a terrible job of explaining it. And the bocce ball analogy makes zero sense.
Honestly would have been better off with axe throwing.

Or if they really want to reach gen z, use the new mario kart augmented reality track that was just announced. Get two interested parties: younger audience and race fans.

NASCAR themselves has put out some amazing high-quality commercials the past decade or so. I don't know if they're in-house or use an ad agency (95% chance it's an agency) but some of these are masterfully shot, simple, and don't explicitly "sell" you the sport but still make you interested.

This is my all-time favorite-

Daytona Day is the polar opposite to any of this and that's a FOX production as far as I'm aware.

They picked the wrong stick and ball player for most around here. :idunno: I have no idea what he was kicking or throwing, and the target demo is a demographic I know little about. Sure looked professional though I thought.

He played fictional stick and ball for Bayside in the 90's.

So they chose to kick it off with a teen heart throb from two decades ago lol

Because he's starring on an NBC / Peacock reboot of the show that made him a heart throb. That's what is actually being promoted, shh, under the guise that they need to tell the fans some more about the playoffs.

The resulting video is far worse than anything I could have imagined, and I expected lame.

Darlington. The Southern 500. This is it.

The Daytona 500 is the biggest race for hype, for the media, for the celebrity, and for the money. But to me, the Southern 500 at Darlington is the most hallowed ground in stock car racing... and it ain't even close. This. Is. It.

I've always appreciated that Nascar's four consensus crown jewel races have always been scheduled during the regular season... isolated to some degree from the hype of the chase/playoffs. The Daytona 500, World 600, Brickyard 400, and Southern 500 don't need any additional hype to stir the soul and add false importance.

That's my one big regret about the reshuffling of the schedule for 2020... that Darlington is now in the playoffs (but not as the final championship-deciding race). So today there will be too much attention paid to who's running 12th through 16th... and not enough attention on who's winning the freaking Southern 500.

Let's go!

Thanks for the post. I’ll have to do some research on the history and traditions of this race!

Totally agree.

Daytona and Talledega had moments that equaled those at Darlington but they are just too big now and plate racing has reduced the quality of the racing to make it unrecognizable from the glory days.

The stage nonsense just makes it worse. Watching the Indy 500 where they only throw the yellow for cautions just makes the point more obvious.

As was discussed just yesterday, there should be minimum two races at Darlington every year.

NASCAR issued a pre-race penalty to the No. 12 Team Penske Ford team Sunday at Darlington Raceway after pre-race inspection uncovered improperly mounted ballast. The team has been docked 10 driver and owner points, and crew chief Todd Gordon has been ejected.
