2021 IndyCar Miscellaneous Thread

Interesting to hear Homestead may be looking into bringing Indy back, the track itself would probably be the raciest oval for the series if it were to be added for next season. As always, trying to make finances work will be a grind. Hopefully full capacity attendance in 2022 can bring back one of the short ovals that got dropped this year. Iowa has been short on news and rumors since getting dropped from almost everyone’s calendar this year.

I'm glad that they are willing to add more ovals to the schedule again.
Homestead is a great track, hopefully they go back to Michigan as well and add another 1.5er and maybe a short track.

With the way hockey shook out I think NBC has to be the favorite to keep the rights. The first few months of the season, where there's been conflict with late season and playoff NHL, should be more open and flexible now. ESPN will be pretty full between that and the NBA and CBS pretty much always has golf during the day on weekends, hence why that SRX primetime window works well.

Reading Miles' comment about being focused less on economics right now is interesting considering what Roger reportedly wants.

Anybody heard or seen this, any ideas who Top Gun is?

They’ve been light on details, but a team that has competed in the iRacing events with RC Enerson the past year or so and has a shop and allegedly a chassis. The only engine lease still remaining would have to be with Chevy.

Edit: I should add that I’m remaining skeptical until they’re seen turning laps somewhere despite the reporting here.

Thanks, never heard of them before.

CBS is reportedly the favorite to replace NBC as TV rightsholder. A little bit of a surprise still, NBC keeps losing stuff if this is the case. It’d be interesting how they work PGA and IndyCar scheduling and then the final few races in NFL season.

But with NBCSN shuttering at the end of this year, NBC finds itself with few options for IndyCar. It’s already said NASCAR, for which NBC owns right through 2024, will move to USA Network. In addition to IndyCar, NBCSN has been broadcasting IMSA races on NBCSN. “Across motorsports, people are wondering what their future is with NBC,” said one source with knowledge of the matter.

There may not be two better nicknames in motorsports than "Smoke" and "Super-Tex." During this year's Indianapolis 500 on May 30, they'll both watch the Greatest Spectacle in Racing from the same pit stand.
As part of the 60th anniversary of his first of four Indy 500 titles, team owner and 500 legend A.J. Foyt asked five-time 500 driver and the 1996 pole-sitter Tony Stewart to join in the occasion -- in hopes the 1997 IndyCar champ might bring a little much-needed good luck that Sunday.

This would be a huge shakeup.

The whole NBCSN shut down continues to make no sense.

The #52 DCR/RWR entry that Cody Ware ran in the IMS open test last month fell through so there will be 35 cars entered next week instead of the anticipated 36. Nine previous 500 winners as long as they all qualify, one shy of the record in the 1992 field.

Did it fall through or did Indycar say "No Cody, absolutely not!"

He passed all phases of the Rookie Orientation Program last month so I think they just didn’t have money and couldn’t find another driver with money that late. If it were him in the car I definitely believe he would’ve been bumped though so probably no difference either way.

For the Spanish speakers. This has a little juicy nugget in there with Pato O’Ward’s path to F1 and how he got denied a super license. Basically Helmut Marko ****** him over.

2021 starts here:

DragonSpeed shuts down it's IndyCar program, on the other hand, the chassis they owned has by purchased by MSR:
This car just won the Indy 500, btw. Qualified last and finished 23rd last year.

Insane, but the key is the Andretti partnership.

Andretti has the equipment, personnel, expereince, and most importantly a laundry list of data to help MSR. Just goes to show what a solid partnership can accomplish.

It's sad news for Helio, but Shank is working on something bigger than just this year. I think next year Helio will be in the car full time.

MSR sticking with six races for Castroneves | RACER

Even if the money was there, Helio is committed to racing in Stewart's series, and four of those are conflicts anyway. I think Helio has won enough lately and if he misses a few races he'll be fine. If nothing else, wen you add in the IMSA wins, when was the last time Helio didn't win? Right now if I can be any race driver in the world, it would be Helio.

I don't feel sorry for Helio. He's got the world by it's tail right now.

Let's take a second to look at Helio's last three races .

Sebring.......... Wins IMSA championship
Daytona 24..... Win
Indianapolis 500.... Win

Helio doesn't need to run the whole '21 schedule. I think he's already made his point that he's a top professional anywhere he goes. Even if Shank can't put something together Helio is going to land a good deal somewhere.

Santino is going to be a winner someday. If you look at his form on ovals, he has so many solid results, especially at Indianapolis. If nothing else, he's almost always in position for a win to fall into his lap.

I'm not hearing much about this guy. He seems to stay under the radar and only shows up at the end of the race in solid position. I don't think they showed his car even once on TV, and yet he was on the back of the lead group. Where did this guy come from? Considering how Santino tormented all the euro-weenies, it's probably good he stays out of the limelight and lets the results speak.

Personally I want him to go to F1 and start a feud with Mazepin. Oh, the butthurt would be interstellar.

Hell no, I want him to stay right here racing in Indy cars.
No, I don't want Helio in F1. I just had to pile on Mazepin like everyone else!!!

However, we do want Helio in IMSA.

The youth movement is going to push everyone out of Indycar eventually and Helio is not a young dude. Helio is in a good position because he can still hang onto an Indycar ride for at least a while, and plenty of sportscar teams would love to have him too.

I was replying to your post about Santino.
Oh, you're right. I got completely turned around.

I was disappointed he didn't get a full time gig, but Santino has now got a really good part time gig with a great team. Hopefully he can turn that into a full season next year, and maybe get some good results this weekend.

I'm kind of a Santino fan because I love all the butthurt he caused in Europe. I mean, he redefined butthurt. Thing is, he got all the Euro weenies so upset, just by brushing his teammate's tire after a race, It was nothing. And then ...... everyone went apesh*t. When you see F1 drivers colliding on the straights, a little tire scrubbing on the cool down lap really should not be a big deal, except, that is, when it's an American. The people on the European forums lost their minds. They literally lost their stuff. Some of their butts are still on fire. Awesome.

So no, Santino did not get a fair shake over there because they would have let any Frenchman do the same thing and act like they didn't see it. So far the only person Santino has upset over here has been Daly, and Daly severely overreacted to the entire thing. As long as Santino keeps his nose clean, I'm gonna hope he does well.

When he's ready we can send him back over there to create some new butthurt.
