Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

Pass I remember the year they made the spring Phoenix race 600 kilometers and that was too long

Yep....one and done IIRC.

NASCAR will never increase another oval race distance. I think with the new car laps are going to be substantially faster at road courses and you might see Watkins Glen increase its length. That race is traditionally just over 2 hours long, typically the shortest on the schedule along with Bristol when it runs clean.

I came across some photos yesterday of the inner side of North Wilkesboro. That place is in some bad shape in some places. Some areas need to be completely torn down. But some others aren't in too bad of shape.

But I think the only way it ever hosts a Cup race again is if it's a dirt track. You don't have to have A-1 facilities for a dirt track like you would a Cup track since the place is going to get dirty and stay that way. To get it going as a Cup worthy dirt track I see digging up the old asphalt, tearing down falling down buildings, building a new press box, building new suite areas, building new concessions and restrooms, and obviously a lot of paint. That will still take a lot of money. But building a press box and suites for a dirt track could be done for less money and on a smaller scale.

I took economics I & II in 1976, so a lot must have changed since then. How the Rock and NWB, could survive without packing the house a couple times a year is beyond me. I have been to both of those tracks a number of times and with all the new regulatory restrictions, expected amenities and the costs of building I am pretty comfortable saying neither of these tracks will be back, unless it's just a token race or two. No matter how much I would like to see it.

How big a track can they fit in there? I went back to old convertible series stats because they ran a lot of stadiums but they never ran LA

You're right on the financials. To me, with NASCAR looking to add more short tracks and short tracks across America dying out fast, I'd like to see a top-notch half mile facility built. Something that can run big NASCAR cup races and also run weekly events at the hometracks/"roots" level.

Maybe it could be Wilkesboro? They're 5/8ths of a mile or just around it, correct?

Back from the huge mall and several residential subdivisions?
If you race in the mall, you won't have the COTA spray if it rains? Nobody goes to malls anyway. I think there is potential here.

I suspect NASCAR will try to use existing facilities whenever possible, regardless of configuration. I doubt we'll see a new top-notch facility build in the next decade, probably longer.

Why don't we just add banking to New Hampshire? Would be like if Martinsville and Rockingham had a baby

Roger Penske said Bobby Rahal and HyVee (based in Iowa) are working on a plan to help “save” Iowa Speedway. Its lone weekend with ARCA is coming up next month.

That place has had a checkered past since it was built. I wonder if it is as simple as mis-management. Oh oh, silly season time..Eddie Gossage to Iowa.

I thought it was destined for bigger and better things once NASCAR bought it, I was surprised it never really took off. Between Xfinity, Trucks, and IndyCar the racing was usually pretty good.

Ooooh another below average aero dependent track Eddie can make so much worse

It's kinda out in the toolies. Not exactly in or close to a large metro area.
I don’t think TV ever helped out much in that regard either. A few times FOX put the Xfinity race on at 4 or 5 PM on a Sunday, so not nearly enough time for fans to get back to a place like Kansas City or especially Chicago/St. Louis. NBC did that with the Indy race once or twice too. It’s definitely a track that needed only Friday and Saturday night races.

Chicagoins couldn't drive 40 miles south to attend a race, I couldn't see them traveling all the way to Newton Iowa either and Kansas City has a going track there. Heck if I know.

It's definitely time for a repave. The surface is worn so much that drivers are in tire conservation mode all the time.

Short of rampant failures, too much tire degradation is better than not enough for such tracks.

Nobody is going to be fooled into thinking that a basic repave will elicit "better racing". My guess is that Marcus Smith wants to capitalize on the desire to return to the "old Atlanta" configuration. Any such project would be huge, so the details will be interesting to follow.

Speculation on Reddit is SMI is turning Atlanta into a short track. I dont buy it, I think I share you're thinking in that its likelier it goes back to the original configuration.

Hope so. Solve the short track shortage another way. I wouldn't be too surprised though.

With Fontana turning into a bull ring, it might be the new craze in top-level US motorsport.

Well depending on how the product is on track, but I think Atlanta going back to its old layout seems the most likely to happen.

Dale Jr would be happy with that layout
