Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

"the Clash will be open to all teams, and heats will set the field"

Sounds like the All Star to me. I'm wondering if both races have outlived their value, but I haven't see the TV numbers for either one.
The All Star race is only open to race winners, with only a few who aren’t making it in. This is open to ALL teams. So that’s different.

Wait a sec

If the clash is open to all teams next year, are we about to see 30+ cars on a quarter mile track?

Sounds fun to me. If they do a heat race format with actual eliminations, meaning everyone doesn't make the main event, even better. The Daytona Clash had become an awful and tired event. Replacing it with almost anything is a step forward of sorts. I would prefer no exhibition races, but if they insist, this already sounds better.

Can't believe it took so long after I posted that last might for the comments to begin. One of my wonders is how many teams will enter and is it possible to see a large amount from teams coming out of left field to enter. Probably would depend on the money I would guess.

The Clash as we knew it died a long time ago. Now the last two years to do whatever NASCAR are doing with qualifying and who knows if qualifying even comes back, this Coliseum race is a fine idea. I did love the original Busch Clashes, those were awesome.

IMO the road course was a ton of fun to watch. The oval clash turned into a wreckfest for so many years and thats on the drivers, not the event or sport. If they raced with more respect it might have stayed a better event.

In the abstract, the road course is fine and superior from a racing standpoint. However, it doesn't fit as exhibition race fodder.

uh, about the only thing similar that I can see is that the two will have race cars there.

Sorry, brain dump on my part. I have some stressful distractions this week. Never mind.

"They'll come knowing they won't be able to see worth squat, but they'll come anyway..."
Exactly.

The Romans filled The Colosseum every weekend ... and no heat races for the chariots.

Losers straight into the lion pit ... and we complain about fines and lost points.

Really? Isn't it a bit toasty in Georgia in the summer?
Very much so. I think it was in the low 90's for this year's race. Looked like attendance was lower than for the spring race. That's why I don't get this move.

I believe on DBC the said there is only 3 Saturday night races. If true thats laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeee.

If I'm interpreting the photo correctly, you regard this as a bad thing. If that's the case, why? I don't see the issue.

Incidentally, NASCAR won't be competing with the fourth major either. The (British) Open is televised during our morning.
I would like to see apple to apple metrics behind the impact of NASCAR going up against a major. However, I doubt that this could actually happen. I could be way off base but I think the general/average demographics of a NASCAR fan and a golf major fan to be widely separated. In my own little world, and little it is, I do not know anyone that is a fan of both sports would choose golf over NASCAR.

??? They said they found three of their four lowest-rated events went up against golf majors. Why wouldn’t they try to avoid those?
OK, but what three races were they? Would they still be three of the four lowest rated events even if they were not up against a golf major? I have no idea.

Nashville went up against the US Open and COTA the PGA Championship and I would be willing to bet there’d be at least marginal gains if that weren’t the case. Martinsville got rained out to Sunday against the Masters.

Saturday night races aren’t ideal either but it’s worth trying and comparing year-over-year and they also eliminated one clash entirely. Not a bad strategy.

That's rough.

Got to nail the suspension setup coming out of the hauler.
Not to mention and I'm spitballing like hell here. Define "no adjustments underneath the car". With the formula being completely different, I'm guessing access to the rear axle, transmission, driveline, or any of those areas?

Still a lot of questions to be answered so, I'm just thinking limiting teams who can just change a component at free will. That prevents it, but I'm just guessing.

I don't like that a lot of tracks have built in these nice fan zones for folks to enjoy on practice days just to make them now obsolete. It isn't even worth the hassle of working your way into the infield for a 20-30 minute session.
The trek to the Daytona infield, Kentucky infield, Chicagoland were not easy. I remember the steps going up to get out of the tunnel at Chicagoland seemed forever. So much walking. Then the first time I went to Daytona, we got LOST in the infield trying to get out when the race got delayed in 2015 and we walked that tunnel, my wife was not happy with me at that time.

The year that Mark Martin won at Chicagoland, I worked as a volunteer as part of a school fund-raiser and spent several hours pre-race as an escort for groups in the sponsor hospitality areas.

The groups were taken from the hospitality areas near the main entrance, past security at the Turn 1 tunnel entrance, through the tunnel and back through the infield to the pit area where the groups were then pretty much left to fend for themselves while I walked back to get another group.

So much walking . . . . . indeed.

I have never seen so many people so pissed off about an exhibition race.
Well in my case it's because when NASCAR gets goofy ideas, they tend to double down and go WAY overboard on them. Lord only knows wht this little experiment will lead to.

I figured that’s why.

I also loved the couple mid-week races we had last season. However those ratings were in the toilet so I fully understand not holding them again. Atleast they tried, albeit out of necessity.
Mid week races worked well for SRX. They had a lower overhead. Think it would work for WoO too. Not every race but some of the bigger ones.
