NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

Probably why Phelps was talking about how stable their ratings are as the most stable sport on TV since 2018. I guess stick and ball is all over the place, I don't follow it so I am guessing looking at the NBA finals.
A few are on track to do as well as they have as far as audience size as they have in a while, a few are still in decline, but pretty much every sport’s share should be increasing at this point. Hence why basically every sport with a new TV deal announced over the last couple of years has gotten a major rights fee increase.

The one thing I do wonder about is it seems like NASCAR is at the back end of the current sports rights cycle so how much else the networks are willing to shell out will be interesting to see. Last time around seven or eight years ago was arguably a more opportune time to have deals expiring.

Hopefully next year will continue to be good
It will be very interesting to see. If the money goes up, then we know NASCAR can sit at 3 million viewers race and continue to see big contracts. Which will really mean, "Ratings don't matter as long as they don crater to nothing." If the money goes down, then its going to be CART 2.0.

Season-long viewership is basically flat since 2018 and 2019, but four of the five final 2021 races were down double digits from 2019 numbers.

Overall interest in NASCAR Cup racing is strong and stable, and the playoffs continue to be a miserable failure at accomplishing what they were supposed to at the end of the season. Without the playoffs races included, viewership is up considerably.

You can thank (in large part) the NFL for that

It's like what the man said

“Television, which gets a lot of focus, we are the most stable sport on television since 2018,” claimed Phelps

I'm dead serious if NBC even thinks about locking some races behind a Peacock exclusivity paywall in addition to an IPTV service/Cable, I'll watch using SportSurge instead.

**** their greedy asses

I wouldn’t pay extra to watch nascar on TV. The racing really hasn’t been that good.
I used to have NFL and RedZone but since Spectrum deleted them (without compensation) from my channel lineup I simply watch less football.

Or you could try dabbling in the... dark arts... to watch them..

Can't say anymore here

This doesn't look good for those who want the Indy oval back

Additional Cup Series viewership highlights:

  • More than half (11 of 20) of the race windows saw year-over-year viewership gains 2020, including six consecutive races from Michigan (Aug. 22) to Las Vegas (Sept. 26);

  • Indianapolis (Aug. 15 on NBC) and Michigan (Aug. 22 on NBCSN) were the highest-rated sports events of their respective weekends;

  • Indianapolis, Michigan, Road America (July 4 on NBC) and Daytona (Aug. 28 on NBC) made NBC/NBCSN the most-watched TV network during their window.

Indy oval for NASCAR isn't likely anytime soon but the possibility for it still exists more than a few years down the road

The last Brickyard 400 in 2020 was watched by 4.34 million, and the 2021 road course event was watched by 2.81 million on the same network.

I'm personally fine with the road course event instead of the lower HP oval event, but it's clearly less of a draw. Maybe the lower expectations are better, I don't know.

2020 ratings in all sports are skewed because of lockdowns. A 2022 rating will be a more accurate representation of the road course

In 2018 it was 1.2, in 2019 it was 2.9 compared to in 2021 it was 2.8 it isn't clearly less of a draw. One race in 4 years was higher. 2020 was the covid year with many staying indoors and the date played a major roll being on July 5th. I bet both of those factors had a lot to do with the higher number of 4.3.

Fair points except that 2018 was rain delayed and run on Monday.

I would cut the off week and have no off weeks during the season. End in mid to late October. Less conflict with the NFL. Better ratings. Of course the 17 game NFL schedule ridiculousness doesn’t help.

They seem happy with it
I'm not saying they shouldn't be. NASCAR and Fox made multiple changes - format, venue, network, car, etc. I'm saying I don't think it's possible to break down how much of the increase was due to each individual change.

I think any increase at all against the Olympics is terrific. Their ratings are way down. Maybe they should include K-pop bands between each skating pair.
