Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

Let’s get this baby released! My two main take ways from that article are
1.) wow….they might actually move the all star race from Texas for 23
2.) The “big event” has to be trying to nail down a street race for 2023. The question is where?

Let's hope they do move the all star race from Texas.

I've heard rumblings of a street circuit in the Chicago area, but that'd be extremely difficult to pull off. I too want to see the 2023 schedule.

The only street course I'd want to see is something like what they did in Miami for F1.

The Miami F1 track would be awful for stock cars. Maybe 3 decent passing zones and lots of sweeping corners where they'd get strung out. And with a length of 3.3 miles, barriers all around, and NASCAR's stubborn aversion to local yellows, most of the race would be run under caution.

The supposed layout for the Chicago course (Idk if it was ever confirmed. They used it for the one-off iRace) is perfect for NASCAR. Short. Tight turns for lots of passing. Barriers galore but oh well... hopefully won't be too big of an issue with how slow the course is.

If NASCAR was to drop a road course to add the proposed Chicago street course I'd vote for the removal of Sonoma. It was once one of my favorites but the last couple years the racing hasn't been brilliant there.

RA is in my opinion the best place to watch a race. I'm heading up there this weekend to just watch SCCA racing even. I'd hate to see NASCAR leave.

It makes sense since RA took Chicagoland’s date, but man I’m not a fan of this move if this is the case. RA is a classic course.

Well color me shocked....and wrong. I never thought in a million years NASCAR could pull this off with Lori and city government. I'll take that internet L on this one. A couple of things does this mean July 4th in Chicago? Or is this Road America date Chicago is taking moving to another date.....and we see the return of July 4th weekend in Daytona? And adios Chicagoland....this street race will be probably be its death knell right? Que up The Undertaker's music.

I don't know what's true or not regarding Chicagoland rumors, but one rumor is that the stands are in the process of being deconstructed.

I should drive over there, I only live 20 min away ha ha. I heard this rumor too, cant find anywhere else to substantiate it.

Look, I'm not against the idea of a Chicago Street Circuit, but NOT at the cost of Road America.

If NASCAR wants to remove a road course to make room for it, the answer is ****** obvious, move Indy's race date BACK to the IMS oval and take away a date from either Kansas, Darlington, or Richmond to make room for it. Neither of those two dates have the ticket sales to justify 2 dates anymore.

There problem solved

But no, that makes sense and we all know NASCAR doesn't do that. Instead, they'd rather mess with an incredibly successful event to chase a market that may not care

NASCAR should not leave Road America. That's the premier road course in the country, the racing is great, and it'll attract and KEEP fans year after year once the event really gets off the ground.

I'm also in favor of getting rid of Sonoma but it's an SMI track so that's not going to happen unless SMI can get profits from whatever race it gets replaced with ie the COTA lease for removing a date from the Texas oval. Doubt RA would lease the track to SMI for a weekend to run NASCAR, given they've managed the Xfinity races there successfully for a decade and now have a couple Cup races under their belt.

Drivers and their significant others love Sonoma. It won't go anywhere....but to your point, the last two races haven't been great. NASCAR needs to go to the PNW....the proposed street course should be there not Chicago. Not understanding the thinking here.

Just wait until NASCAR has to grapple with a wet street course. Oh my.

Or just go to Portland.

While I agree that street circuits should be for new markets, the PNW already has a track that's capable of hosting professional level racing

Portland is marginal at best.

I'm all for the Chicago Street race but NASCAR should not even consider replacing RA with it. RA had over 100,000 last year and will again this year. Plenty of other tracks to look at who dont get support from the local population that should be considered. RA was what NASCAR was looking for and they delivered, so NASCAR, watch your step on this one.

I’m missing something how can you agree in one post that Cup should go to Portland and then in another post say it’s marginal at best? I’m lost.

The facilities at PIR are way, way below what Cup races are accustomed to. They are primitive by Xfinity standards. I assume that he is aware of that, but also strongly desires a race in his home market.

Ah. I was just trying to see what angle he was coming from, did he want a race in Portland or hard pass?

NASCAR optimistic about future, Clash returning to Coliseum in 2023

NASCAR has looked at Chicago and the Meadowlands for potential temporary street circuits. New Orleans has also been mentioned as a possibility.

Yea the July 4th date also worked really well as well last year for them at RA. The weekend attendance was tremendous.

Like I mentioned in an earlier comment, I'm open to a Chicago street course as well.... but not at the expense of RA. RA is just too brilliant of a track with a huge fanbase already built in. I know sponsors and what not love Sonoma, and it was once one of my favorite races too... but if we are going to drop a RC race, I'd rather see them drop Sonoma and their not impressive attendance then drop RA with their tremendous attendance and interest.

Portland is marginal at best.
I've attended an Indycar race at Portland... and while the track itself is somewhat intriguing, the surrounding area is not at all. (At least when I went) it was incredibly dirty and made me not to want travel to Portland ever again. Also the track facilities are kind of bare bones, with just enough needed to go racing.

I just don't get the fascination that nascar has with wanting a street course in Chicago. It's a city with terrible crime/homicide and from everything I've witnessed very little car culture. I'm not really a road course fan myself, but RA is regarded as one of the top level road courses in the the country and I think it would be a foolish move to dump that to chase this street course in Chicago. Especially with the great turnout they had in year one and the large crowds they always drew for the Xfinity series. I think a street course would be perfect in the Pacific Northwest. But for the love of god please don't increase the number of road course beyond what it already is

Well first of all, the PNW also has horrible crime/homicide as well and nut much in car culture but granted it is more then nothing which Chicago has.

As for why NASCAR would want to do a Chicago street course (and I'm not saying I love the idea or agree with it) is to bring the product directly to the consumer. By putting a race on the streets of one of the biggest cities in America you would be exposing hundreds of thousands of people to the sport. Now this is my theory... but maybe NASCAR runs a street race in Chicago (pray that nobody gets shot) for 1 or 2 years and then bolts and goes back to a real racetrack located in Joliet, IL. Get the people interested in the product first, then they may follow you back to an actual racetrack.

Fiction can be fun.... Here are the most dangerous cities currently in 2022. Gateway should be scrapped going into next year because they are currently the 5th most dangerous city in the United States. I dont think anyone got shot there a couple of weeks ago.......Geez I am not for a street race in the Chi either but comeon, stop with the lazy ass DJT talking points about how dangerous it is here. St. Louis is 1st!!! 1st!! Did you feel unsafe at Gateway thinking fans were going to be shot there when NASCAR was racing? As for this thinking of Chicago and how dangerous it is to host a race here.....Im trying to understand it.....is it racist, stupidity, ignorance or a bad joke?

No live about 2 hrs north of there and having to work in that area several times I have first hand witnessed how terrible that city is. It's always great when you see people flashing guns while driving down the highway (seen it several times) or how about staying in a hotel just outside of Chicago that had an officer dedicated to patrolling the small area consisting of 2 hotels and a 2 restaurants?

So because Chicago didn't crack the top 10 most dangerous cities, means that it's not a dangerous city? https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/loc...-deadliest-year-in-a-quarter-century/2719307/ "Chicago, as it has in previous years, ended 2021 with more homicides than any other city in the United States"

https://worldpopulationreview.com/us-city-rankings/most-dangerous-cities-in-the-us "Chicago had the highest number of homicides in 2018 with 563; almost double that of New York, which has triple the population as Chicago."

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news...0220426-iedehzuq5jdofbhwt3v2w6cjoy-story.html

I don't think you are trying to understand it... if you did, you wouldn't have posted such a misleading comment. Sure Chicago isn't in the top 10, but does that mean it's safe? No. And it's not racist, stupidity, ignorance or a bad joke.... it's reality.

Yeah, can confirm it's getting pretty dicey in Chicago right now. I feel far safer in Detroit/Cleveland than the Chicago area at the moment.

Mispeedway's take here, get rid of Richmond for Chicago street course if that has to be the move. IMO I'd like to see us get bold and race one at a European F1 track or Mexico/Canada to grow the sport

At Sonoma two weeks ago, industry people had their cars broken into while staying in Oakland I believe. Do you advocate taking Sonoma off the schedule because it isnt safe?
