Ty Gibbs Appreciation Thread

I would love to see Ty in the 18 Cup car. But then Kyle would have to go to 23XI or KBM 51 or 54 car. I’m just not a fan of Ty in a different numbered JGR car for some reason. Don’t want to see Kyle retire either.

Ty is a really good talent. I feel like he’s already Cup ready but won’t be in Cup until 2024.

I don’t believe Ty is ready for Cup. Great talent but a lot of people are moved to Cup too soon. Think JHN.

JHN still tears up more stuff than Ty every week to this day. I think both are great but Ty is clearly better.

I agree but neither are ready for Cup.

To me both Ty and JHN and maybe another driver like Gragson (more so with Chevrolet) are just waiting for the perfect opportunity such as Truex retiring after 2023 or MTJ moving to a new team. I don’t think they belong sometimes at their own level they’re at, but they aren’t on the level of the current JGR drivers.

I wouldn't be surprised if Truex announces next season is his last.

If JGR and KFB part ways, there's gonna be an absolute feeding frenzy to get him.

Don’t see much rift with Kyle and JGR. Teams have their openings besides Hendrick. Truex probably retires after next year but would be great for JRM.

I predict the hate will flow strongly through this thread.
I, for one, appreciate Ty Gibbs and his undeniable talent..Reminds me of a younger Kyle Busch. Just my opinion though...
I hope not. While I don't like the kid so far, this thread should be for those that want to show their appreciation just like the Kyle Busch thread. If someone wants to bash him, it shouldn't be here.

I agree. But, there is that select few mature individuals who bash Kyle on his appreciation thread. Why it happens there is beyond me...

I have said several times that Ty will be my favorite driver when he moves up to Cup. His talent is phenomenal and I love watching him beat more experienced drivers in Xfinity.
Hopefully he won't be rushed to Cup, maybe he will replace Truex if he retires after next year.
They grew up watching Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights (if you ain't first you're last🙄) and playing videogames
Days of Thunder was way before our time, I doubt young racers were "inspired" by it.

I was gonna say, Days of Thunder came out in 1990. Ty was born in 2002. He's probably seen it, but like, he's the entire wrong generation to really be gripped by it. Even Talladega Nights.

You guys don't seem to understand how the internet works. This is the Ty Gibbs thread good and bad whether you like it or not.

Ty was a punk for waiting until the other guy took his helmet off to fight while leaving his on. That’s the part that bothered me.
Does that even mean anything? Harvick kept his helmet on when he got into Chase's grill. Do you really think that Harvick is afraid of Chase?
I don’t believe Ty is ready for Cup. Great talent but a lot of people are moved to Cup too soon. Think JHN.
I wonder if the new car changes that thinking.....

I agree. I like him more and more as time goes on.
C'mon man, you know better than that. Gibbs earned his reputation whacking other cars like a damn cue ball, and every week says it's just racing. Until that race someone touches *his* fender, and it's all like...

Absolutely....that is the only reason why so many are talking about him. He just wrecks guys. That's all. Good point. Sheesh.

Tell you one thing....I really haven't cared about Xfinity since the KFB embargo, but I care now.....TFG.

It would be understandable for a person to have a single standard for how professional athletes should behave. Professional ethics--much like personal morality--is relative. Coach has managed KB and Stewart...and to your point numerous football athletes not by a preconceived and specific standard, but by a standard relative to the human beings that they are. I am sure that there are lines that cannot be crossed--and clearly KB nor Tony crossed those enough to be fired, but I can't say with any certainty if any of his football players did....but I am sure some probably did. Indeed Coach is a Christian man, but he accepts people for who they are, and does his best to make them the best person they can be. Now, that "best" may be crap to you, but not everybody's ceiling is that of a William Byron or a Jimmie Johnson or whoever you consider to be the standard.

Ty Gibbs is a great kid based on the brand he projects, and one hell of a driver by all accounts. As for "dirty"....I don't think anybody knows what the hell that is anymore. If "Aw Shucks" Chase Briscoe can pile into Denny under a black flag and take out Tyler Reddick with a smile, then I give up on what the standard is.

Thanks for responding to the thread. We will miss you here, but feel free to come back anytime.
I'll jump on Lew's side and say that no one managed Tony Stewart or Kyle Busch.

Particularly Tony. I think some of us forget how much of a villain he was..im rewatching the 2004 season all over again (mainly to LOL at how much better the gen 4 car was than the gen 7), but there were quite a few segments on Tony roughing people up.

It got pretty dramatic. Tony fell out of the limelight by 2013, and but he was public enemy #1 for a long long long time.

DW was disliked because he was a ****y trash talker and won a lot.

Tony set a new standard. He, and a handful of following drivers were disliked because they were downright detestable at times. And Gibbs wasn't going to get in the way of Tony's tantrums. He knew not to. And it got him 2 cup championships and a driver who outperformed Jeff Gordon from 1999-2005

I hear what you are saying. These kids are growing up in a racing world when the definition of a bump and run vs. a dump and run is ambiguous at best. I haven't seen anything written about Briscoe that describes him as dirty (until your post). Why? Because he's a grassroots, dirt tracking'...rrrrracer...smiles and shakes hands and everything is just fine. Ty Gibbs....different narrative.....spoiled brat who never earned anything. So, if it's murky from the outside, it's murky from the inside. These kids never saw the old school guys race, so who's fault is it that they don't know what the hell they are doing? Crew Chiefs...and owners. Why aren't they threatening to dump them for their driving? I get that the yappers here will say that it's because Ty is Coach's grandkid, but then what about ol Briscoe? They aren't threatening because they don't know. They react to the negative **** if it surfaces, but stay quiet if the fans and media are willing to ingest it. We place all of the blame on the driver, but this is a team sport and egomaniac owners are staying quiet when their drivers get away with ****. Ty is in a place in his career where I think he is responsive to those he trusts the most. I thought he raced Larson very well last week, but at the same time much credit needs to be given to Larson for not being a dick. Had Larson done what he could have done, it would have been interesting to see if Ty had progressed in this area, but the Ty we have seen sure as hell would have hit him back.

As far as the crews....I don't know what they are expecting. Their livelihood depends on the success of the driver. Do they see overly aggressive driving as a guy going all out for his guys, or as someone who is an egomaniac driving for himself and not giving a **** about the hours that go into fixing a race car? I truly don't know.
I'll differentiate between Ty and Chase.

Because the difference isn't in narrative.

Firstly. Ty is much more talented. So that skews some options. Secondly, he will race agressively, and "does what he can to win and doesn't care who he wrecks".

Briscoe, on the other hand, I think is just a bit of a bonehead who just makes stupid moves. Not so much a "I'm going to win this race and if I get into him, whatever", and more so a "I'm going to completely overdrive this corner in hopes that I can finally make the car stick even though I know better"

All of this. I liked Tony Stewart but there were quite a few times where I just detested his shenanigans.

When you drive like that, you better be able to take it when others drive you that way. Ty couldn't handle it when Sam Mayer did. Though, this weekend, he didn't act like a pompous ass about it.

John Hunter Nemechek is the worst for this right now, IMO. That ARCA Race was the perfect example. He was a damn bull in a china shop when he fell out of the lead and kept driving into other cars, drove through his own teammate, and then got pissy when the kid retaliated.

This shtick will work for Ty Gibbs though. He's in EVERYBODY's head. Even got in Larson's head a couple weeks ago. He's quickly becoming the guy that, when you see him in your mirror, you get worried because you just know he's going to wreck you and guys just make mistakes because of it. Ty Gibbs isn't just one of the most talented drivers in all of stock car racing, he's playing the psychological game perfectly.

Ty Gibbs is the future of NASCAR racing. He's gonna be hated by most, but he's gonna win ... a lot.

Much like with Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch, It took me way to long to start appreciating Tony.

I said a few months ago that I think he's the next great multi-time champion and that he's the next BIG villain in the footsteps of Tony and Kyle. And he's in the perfect situation to do it.

His family name gets him the ride. He's a spoiled rich kid. He IS talented enough.

And all that in the evil Toyota empire.

Assuming he starts winning, NASCAR is going to need Elliott vs Gibbs to be a thing. Hero vs villain.

With this playoff format and the sudden death winner take all championship, I think it's going to be really hard for someone to win championships the way Dale, Jeff and Darth did. At this point, I could see Chase Elliott winning 4+ championships because he runs up front everywhere, and has always been really good at Phoenix.

Chase Elliott is the best driver in NASCAR, by a country mile, right now. Not the most talented, but where he lacks in talent, he makes up for in mindset, and he has a great team around him. He's a lot like Mark Martin was back in the 90s, always there, always in the top-5 or top-10, always a threat to win, always there at the end. Except, Mark had to deal with Dale Earnhardt in his prime, Jeff Gordon at his peak, Tony Stewart, and Darth Vader. On top of that, Mark Martin got screwed over by NASCAR every chance they got (same with Carl Edwards).

But championships these days, I don't even care about them. This WWE championship format has completely killed the credibility of the NASCAR Cup Series championship, IMO.

And Gibbs wasn't going to get in the way of Tony's tantrums. He knew not to.
...and that is "managing" Tony, isn't it? I mean, we cannot lose sight of the fact that Coach "managed" football players. Football players. In an era when they were ingesting stuff that would cause "rage." This is where Coach is brilliant, and completely not the hypocrite some make him out to be. He has his morality as a man, but that morality has to change with the athletes he manages. What did those conversations with both Kyle and Tony sound like behind closed doors? What did those conversations sound like with pissed off football players? I don't know either because they were behind closed doors.

This shtick will work for Ty Gibbs though.
Then why in the absolute hell should he change a thing?

I don't know that I agree here.....I think the deal is that Ty is Coach's grandson, and that there is the perception (perhaps justifiable) that he has had it all handed to him. Some don't like his flippant attitude (KFB) against a backdrop of a grandfather who is a devout Christian. Some see it as hypocritical. Mix the rich & entitled Christian kid with the **** you attitude on the track and you have the perfect villain mix. Briscoe is the down to earth aw shucks grassroots kid who came from nothing. He is the every guys' driver. I call bull****. What he did to Denny last year and Reddick this year was entitled crap...at least own it. I might be even more pissed at Reddick for enabling it.

John Hunter Nemechek is the worst for this right now, IMO.
Both JHN and Harrison Burton put out the brand their Daddy's want them to promote. I can't stand that. Be your own man. Give me Ty Gibbs for the win.

Which Champion under the current format is undeserving?

Then why in the absolute hell should he change a thing?

Personally, I don't like dirty driving. That's my preference.

But there is no incentive for Ty to change. He's probably going to become the most successful driver of his generation on it. And this kind of driving is now encouraged. Honestly, all those kids drive like that. I mentioned Sam Mayer earlier and what he did in K&N or ARCA East or whatever it's called now. This is how these damn kids drive, and Ty's the best at the dirty driving game.

KyBu in 2015, Darth in 2016, Logano in 2018, Elliott in 2020 all stick out like sore thumbs to me. Even Harvick's 2014 championship does to a degree, that should've been Gordon's title, and Harvick should be a three-time champion.

I am not sure what "dirty" even is anymore...but I get what you are saying. Ty is a 19 year old Xfinity rookie....it will be interesting to see if/how he changes in time.

Yeah, I get that based on a metric of the past, but I am not sure any of those guys were so far out of the realm of conceivability that they should be considered undeserving. I mean we aren't talking about a winless Newman or anything.

I always appreciated the greatness during Super Jimmie's Reign of Terror, but I was also ready for it to end.
I started to, but as a Carl Edwards fan, I was over him by 2008.

My comment in regards to Gibbs vs Chase is moreso about Chase.

I totally agree with everything you said about Gibbs.

I just think Briscoe...isn't very good, has poor race craft, and is an idiot behind the wheel. Ty is talented enough and smart to know what he's doing, I think Briscoe just isn't.

As for Tony being managed...you're right. You swayed me there.

My biggest problem with the playoffs is that every round is three races and then the final round is one race. That's the part that kills the legitimacy of it for me.

Also not a real big fan of automatically advancing if you win. I just believe the best drivers in each round should advance to the next, and if winning a race in the round of 8 isn't enough to put you in the final four, you shouldn't be there.

This format is strictly about entertainment and forcing "Game 7 Moments."

Sometimes predictability in sports is okay. It makes "game 7 moments" special.

I'd personally prefer a more modified version of the old Chase.

Keep stage racing, but don't throw yellows, just award points based on running order at that time.

Top 12 drivers make it, and receive bonus points during the 26 races to give us the final seeding.

Top 12 drivers rank in the order in which they finish, 5 points apart, as a rough draft. Regular season champion gets 20 bonus points, runner up gets 10, third gets 5. Additionally, drivers get 1 bonus point for a stage win, 5 bonus points for a race win, and 2 bonus points for leading the most laps.

All that gets added up, and you have your seeding for a 10 race shootout. I'd imagine that in this case, one of top 3 seeds wins it all, more often than not. But it creates a high stakes, "best you got" sort of circumstance that awards regular season consistency, and gives someone a chance who WAS close enough during the regular season to go on a hot streak.

I think this sort of format gives you the best of a 3 formats.

Modified version = 36 races, 36 drivers.

Stage breaks = TV Timeouts.

I hate the "winner take all" format of the last race. HATE IT. Because it's a deviation from the rest of the playoffs and races.

And I hate the fact that a man can win 9 races and not be in the final four because NASCAR forced a restart in the rain.

Listened to Ty and Chris on the scanner Saturday. Unbelievable. After the suspension issue, and Ty went 4 laps down, it was wonderfully shocking to listen to his poise, thirst for understanding, and commitment. The dude was in it to the bitter end. I know this doesn't fit the narrative many want, but this kid is special....and while not perfect has an attitude to match--in a good way.

P18....and had never driven the damn thing. 1:00 a.m. in the sim. Shows up, races. Unbelievable. Boy Wonder? Damn straight.

The bonafide future of NASCAR racing. Five years from now, he'll be winning tons of races.

We haven't had a talent like this since Jeff Gordon.
