2022 IndyCar News/Misc.

Another twist to this saga. I wonder if he doesn’t just wind up doing McLaren’s new FE program with some F1 testing (if he winds up with them at all).

Still think it likely ends in a settlement / buyout of some sort. A lot of bluster on both sides. Gannasi telling Jenna Fryer that he still wants Palou in the car for 2023, because that has to be his public stance. If he doesn't want Palou in the car, there is no case. Same with McLaren. They aren't about to tell the media "We're glad to do a buyout, and are just nailing down the number."

Juncos-Hollinger has an announcement tomorrow:

Also, an announcement from IMS at 11am tomorrow. Probably announcing IMSA for its event there:

JHR picking up the option on Ilott. There goes one of Ganassi’s options.

And you can’t spell IMSA without IMS.

The good news is the courts decide and no one has made a huge public stink. My guess is if Palou is that unhappy Chip probably won't want him anyway. It's just a matter money now.

They sure do keep playing up this F1 angle.

I thought both sides would be at least professional enough to allow CGR and Palou to finish the season together, now I'm not so sure.

TK will be racing Stock Car Brasil at Interlagos this weekend.
I’d be surprised if they didn’t finish out the season together. I don’t think either are interested in another breach of contract.

In the event that it were to happen, I’m pretty sure RHR would be in the car.

Zak has the dangling carrot of F1, but with Herta/O'Ward/Palou all being "test drivers" for him leads to many concerns of the synergy around this team. Zak cannot be giving out false hope like this.

Pato is already bruised from seeing Colton gaining all of this traction... Too many drivers on the ship for my liking at McLaren.

Might wind up like Monisha Kaltenborn before long.

Spice from potential future teammate…

“I think many drivers thought we knew who he was,” O’Ward said. “I feel like he’ll say a lot of things but then he does the complete opposite, which I don’t think is a secret. We’ve all seen it. It kind of seems like reverse psychology, so whatever he’s saying, expect the absolute difference.”

And…

Asked if he can still win the championship amid all the distractions, Palou said “it will be amazing when I do.”

Indeed they do. According to Jenna Fryer's article, Palou's lawyer seems to be relying on the F1 angle to underpin their legal argument.

Two weeks ago in this thread, I speculated that Chip probably thought his contract with Palou was firm and clear, but Palou and McLaren relied on a dangled F1 test opportunity to trigger an escape clause or at least to muddy the waters. Looks like that might be correct.

Now comes arbitration, mediation, a negotiated settlement, terms of which are "confidential."

LMAO at Pato O'Ward's comments about his future teammate. Frankly, I like both O'Ward and Palou, and I wish Pato had taken the high road rather than diving into this drama scene with Denny Hamlin-esque comments.

Remember when Formula 1 had a similar situation when they only wanted 16-18 (don't know exactly) races and now they have 24 I believe. Not complaining as I'd like as many races as possible for both series as long as they don't cause problems.

In a change of philosophy the series reportedly wants to expand to 20 races in the coming years. Penske had previously said 17 or 18 was the sweet spot, iirc. The Milwaukee Mile and a Mexican track are favored to join the calendar in 2024/2025.

I’m glad Penske is changing course some, I desperately hope the Freedom 100 comes back eventually as well, they already run Iowa & Gateway anyway…..

Same. Rookies have to learn and get bitten by Indy at some point. Rather it be at 200mph in a Light car than 230mph in an Indycar.

The Milwaukee Mile, Mexico, Pocono (with the new aeroscreen) would be my choices if they want to get back to 20 races. Maybe they’re doing a doubleheader somewhere. I think The Mile & Mexico are solid additions.

Make Texas a 500 mile race and have Texas, Indianapolis, Pocono as the Triple Crown 500 again.

Pocono might be more likely to have success now that NASCAR has only one weekend there. They always had a pretty dense summer before, and their one weekend last week was pretty full.

Mexico would be a nice way to get the season going earlier, the ramp up to May is usually pretty slow.

I would like to see Milwaukee right after the 500 or in August with ARCA. Mexico is an early season race.

I hope Pocono can be a 20th race

OMG!
Maybe I'm dumb but what does him being a citizen of Spain have to do with anything? He signed a contract and doesn't want to honor it.

What Is Diversity of Citizenship?

Diversity of citizenship refers to cases where opposing parties involved in a lawsuit are citizens of different states or countries. If one of these parties is a corporation, they are defined as a citizen of the state where their business operates or is incorporated. If diversity of citizenship is in play, a case between two parties will fall under federal court jurisdiction, per Article III, section 2 of the United States Constitution.

Rosenqvist has re-upped with McLaren, however its TBA if he's going to stay in IndyCar or move to the new Formula E team:

Apparently this was a ploy? Jesus H.

Reached last week by RACER to ask if Rosenqvist was under contract for 2023, a McLaren Racing spokesperson declined to comment.

The exact reason behind positioning Rosenqvist as being signed to a non-existent extension is unknown. One possible angle would involve McLaren’s ongoing attempts to land Palou to replace Rosenqvist in the No. 7 Chevy and wanting to protect its opportunity to use Rosenqvist as a fallback option.

RACER understands that if Palou’s contract with Ganassi for 2023 is enforced by a federal judge, McLaren will keep Rosenqvist in IndyCar. But amid the uncertainty of whether Palou or Rosenqvist will occupy the car next season, a press release that diverts attention away from Rosenqvist as a target could, in theory, be beneficial to McLaren as the legal process plays out.

I was disappointed that "bump day" didn't even happen at this year's Indy 500, but this "silly season" is the next best thing. LOL.
