Deegan update

She can and likely will get to Cup in a sport that's not a meritocracy, but that doesn't change the designation if her entire career ends up being mediocre.

Personally, I think we've seen what we're going to see from her in the Truck Series, and I'm almost inclined to agree that she might do better in Xfinity. The equipment disparity alone between the haves and have-nots would put her in the top half of the field regardless. Those Truck races are ****fests. Deegan puts herself in that position, but they're still ****shows.

She's not as bad as, say, Natalie Decker. Not even close, she'd drive circles around Decker. But she's not a top-tier talent. The areas where she struggles are related to skill, not equipment or experience.
So what?

There have been funded drivers in motorsports since sponsorship exists.

Why does Deegan have to be champion or bust?

Deegan's has lasted over 6 years, how long for Danica's mess. When Go Daddy dropped her it was a quick slide downhill. Very disorganized
Danica was more of a household name before NASCAR than Deegan ever has been.

I agree Deegan is talented and deserves her rides as long as she can run top 15 or so.

But there's light-years between Deegan and Danica in terms of how effectively they were marketed.

I don't think she's as well known as your suggesting. This is no knock on her

She was.

I think Jade Avedisian has the potential to be better than Bryson. Taylor Reimer and Mariah Ede aren’t far behind.
Reimer never committed to racing consistently did she? I remember reading about her sort of just living life and the popping into a car and killing it.

I remember thinking she had a future if she saught it out.

Completely forgot about her until this comment.

10th in USAC National Midget points this season.

Exactly, your not gonna see Deegan on Superbowl commercials while Danica was on them before she was even in nascar. Outside of motorsports, nobody knows who Deegan is.

Exactly. Hailie has about half a million YouTube subscribers. That's not a "small" audience, but there are many, many independent YouTubers will larger followings than her. Her Instagram following is at 1.2 million right now, but anybody can buy fake followers to spruce up that stat, so I'm not sure I buy that that's all organic.

I don't know a single person in real life, except for those who have already been really plugged into stockcar racing for years, that knows who Hailie Deegan is.

My point is, Ford is investing in her with the hope that she'll turn into a big Cup star and maximize exposure. But if that starts to look like an impossibly, then at some point the math won't add up anymore, when they can funnel their funding of her into other advertising or endorsement deals and get equal or better return on investment.

Trucks and even Xfinity rides are cheap enough for Ford and Monster to continue this bet without having to think too hard about it, but getting her into an SHR seat is going take a lot more stringent justification in my opinion. If Danica wasn't sustainable at her level of fame, then what does that tell us about somebody with far less media clout than that?

Nobody cares about motorsports in general, it’s about the most irrelevant thing ever unfortunately.

I haven't followed Hailie's career like that, but at the ripe old age of 21, I think she has plenty of time to develop and mature into a good or even great NASCAR driver. The idea that anyone would write her off right now, or even after next season if she doesn't do well, is pretty comical to me.

Driver development has to yield a certain level of development though. She has been pushed up the ladder literally on the basis of "this lower series isn't beneficial enough to me" despite the fact that she isn't a strong contender to begin with. Being mediocre in a weak ARCA field, then being mediocre for a couple years years in a weak truck series field, isn't development.

As somebody largely on the outside looking in here, all I know is that I see some folks expecting a heck of a lot out of a girl who's barely even old enough to legally drink, and I don't understand what the rush is. I don't know what Ford's or her sponsors' or team's expectations are, but as a fan who's not paying her to race, I'm in no hurry. I have all the time in the world to wait to see how good or mediocre of a driver she eventually becomes.

Respectfully, I don't think you're seeing the greater picture of how driving development is these days. Drivers are running full-size late models now multiple years before they can even get their regular drivers license. Some short tracks are having to change their rules to accommodate it. 21 for a development driver anymore is not young. That's somebody who's already been racing for several years and is expected to have a certain level of pace and racecraft.

She finished worse in points this year than Ryan Preece or Parker Kligerman, both of which only ran partial schedules. Parker ran 11 less races than her, in a 23 race schedule. Preece ran 13 races less than her. Corey Heim also beat her in points, and he ran 7 less races than she did and he was a truck series rookie while she was in year two. I mean, c'mon. I know Preece is a known talent, but losing to somebody who ran less than 50% of the schedule in the same equipment as you is insane.

Maaaaaan, I'm just gonna admit it. Your argument is getting way too deep for me. :XXROFL:

Again, I don't follow her like that, and I don't have nearly as much of a vested interest as you and others do in the meat and potatoes of her career statistics or her development as a driver up to this point, especially when compared to other drivers. I've seen a few videos of her on here, and she won me over after the couple of SRX races I saw her in last year. I know other guys have come along who have shown more talent, have run better, and have better career stats than her. I don't really care about any of that. I'm not saying any of this as an insult towards you or anybody else, so please don't take it that way.

I didn't come up here to stan for her or defend her honor and stats. I just like the girl, I want to see her succeed and have fun living what most of us would likely consider a dream life, and I can wait to see if she goes on to achieve success at a high level in NASCAR. That's it. I'm a pretty patient guy in general when it comes to racing these days. It's a subjective form of entertainment, and we all look at it differently.

I don't give two ***** to be honest, but it's not hard to look at the results and put two and two together.

More power to you, I don't feel any type of way toward you at all for your stance on her. But I personally find it to be kind of ridiculous that she's being pushed the way that she is, because it's very clearly only because she's an attractive female. If she were a regular dude she would not have half a million YouTube subscribers. Heck, she wouldn't even have a thread on this forum. I just want to see racers race, and I want to see the best of the best. That's the entertainment value in this for me, personally. I don't feel that clickbait YouTube thumbnails should propel a NASCAR career into skimming the second highest level of the sport if the performance to back it isn't there. That's just my own two cents, nothing more.

She has time but she doesn't have that much time realistically, most elite driving talent show flashes of their full potential within their first few seasons on track in these development series, and she's been to some of these tracks 2 to 3 times now, so it is a fairly objective look.

There's multiple reasons why not to write her off just yet, but I think this upcoming season or two is really important for her and what it will ultimately become. Staying in the same series and taking an upgrade in equipment, it's go time to show what she's capable of, as much pressure as that may be.

You're clearly not a fan of Hailie Deegan. That's fine. We can agree to disagree. Have a good night, my brotha. ✌️

perfect example of how known she is. The dealership she was getting chases' pit bike at did a video of her name on a tag on the bike. The video went viral and she worried that Chase would find out.

I wish it was gonna be that easy but the fact is, she will not be in better equipment at Thorsport. Her teammates consistently out performed her in the same equipment at DGR with Preece winning and Both Gray Brothers outperforming her consistently. Gilliland doesnt have second rate stuff. She was given the best of the best which included 2 of the best Crew Chiefs in the Truck series history. Mike Hillman Jr has 23 wins , 119 top 5's and 180 top 10's and Jerry Baxter has 16 wins, 61 top 5's and 110 top 10's. She is moving to a team that has Crafton, Rhodes and Majeski. Good luck

Results lol, She could win 4 Truck championships in a row and that wouldn't stop the clown show around here. No other top 25 driver in the truck series has a thread that is 28 pages long. I wonder why that is?
No top 25 truck driver with a win has either.

Maybe in her town, but the general public that isn't into motorsports (which is the majority of the general public) have never heard of her. Danica was known because of go daddy. Deggan is not well known.

By definition, you dont get a video to go viral with just one hometown

People can complain all they want but there's no arguing that her social media presence is huge. Whether some people will admit it or not social media is where most things are these days (news, advertising, business, entertainment...)

Truth. BUT its a double edged sword if social media turns on you.

Her social media presence is huge, but it's greatly overestimated by this forum.

Like @Daytripper and others have said, Hailie Deegan isn't even close to a household name. She's carved out a large fanbase within a small sport.

It won't. The thing about fandoms, especially in the social media age, is that they're very cult-like.

We see it in this forum. There's an excuseapalooza every week for her bad performances. And when she has one average run, it's hailed as a historic milestone by fans and especially by the media.

You see the same thing with Chase. I said it before he could run into a stopped car on the track and his fans would claim its the other drivers fault for backing into him.

I have seen this - Agreed. Question, why didnt Danica receive the same excuseapolooza? I mean I was/am a diehard DP supporter, but I was fighting an army of nay sayers.

It's pretty much most fandoms these days.

A lot of fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe think these movies are literally Citizen Kane, and if you don't think they're great cinema, you're just a "Hater." And the media even invents narratives to prop these movies up, even belittling previous historic achievements and far better movies.

Same thing with fans of certain athletes or sports teams. Try having a conversation about baseball with Yankees fans and you'll want to yeet yourself through a window.

The majority of the fanbase was annoyed with Danica Patrick by the time she got into Cup. "Danicamania" was next-level hype. Let's not forget that more people tuned in to see her ARCA debut than watch many of these Cup races today.

Hailie Deegan has been promoted as the "Anti-Danica," the car chick adrenaline junkie who just wants to race and win, and just happens to be hot. She's even taken cheap shots on her podcasts at Danica Patrick and Natalie Decker. Plus she has the benefit of three ARCA West wins, which aren't really that impressive, but the casual NASCAR fan doesn't know or care.

A LOT of people who want to see a woman win and didn't buy into Danica have bought into Hailie.

The jury is still out on whether Hailie Deegan can be a contender at this level. She's shown flashes here and there and she does have well above average car control, which is something you've either got or you don't. But nobody KNOWS for sure if she's going to be a bust or if she's going end up busting out and winning races at a moment's notice.

facts. unbiased info. Thanks Andy for this!

you just proved your own point. she has a thread 28 pages long, and someone with a win has zero pages.
If the point is she sucks as a driver and the only reason she gets coverage is because she is an attractive female.
