Plane Crash in Statesville NC

This hits hard, as many years ago I was close to the racing community via my press pass and racing coverage I did every year at the Charlotte races. When I left broadcasting I entered into a different career path with a large company, relocated out of state. Eventually my role was National Product Manager, and I helped develop marketing plans for these suppliers. I returned to my NASCAR roots when designing a major customer contest with 3M. The winning customers would all be flown to Charlotte for the October 500 race, have pit tours, and enjoy a large suite. But there was a surprise. Greg Biffle himself came up to the suite on raceday, spoke to everyone about his season, how things looked that day, and answered everyone’s questions. THEN he spent time autographing a special edition 3M car for each and every person there! Our customers were thrilled, had a great time! I was beyond impressed with Greg, who genuinely gave of himself to every individual there.

For as good as he was in those situations, he was much more to the many people he befriended while driving and in “retirement”. Ultimately his heroic actions to save lives and bring aid after Helene demonstrated that love and caring beyond measure.

He was a damn good race car driver, and yet, he’ll rightfully be remembered by many more beyond the racing community for his hurricane relief efforts. What a loss for humanity.

I feel especially terrible for his ex-wife Nicole, who now has to bury her child. And for Cleetus, who I sincerely hope does not let this weigh upon him too heavily.

I know these guys fly a lot, but it seems like there are a lot of crashes involving NASCAR people. Kulwicki, Davey Allison, the Hendrick team. Then Dale Jr's near fatality and now Biffle.
Sadly, private planes do have failures in either equipment or occasionally pilot error. It is a risk all pilots face. I think about Chase Elliott who flies his own twin engine plane to most races, and others who are certified. Greg was an excellent pilot who suffered a major aircraft failure on his last flight. Takeoff is the highest risk point of any flight, as there is less opportunity to manage an issue with low altitude. So tragic….

Jack Roush has 2, Ted Christopher and Mike Stefanik from the modifieds. I agree it seems like a lot, though I think statistically its because like you said they fly a lot.

Rick Hendrick and his wife slid off the end of a runway once, Curtis Turner was killed in a plane.
