The real championship thread

So when between 2006 and 2010 was a championship clinched 4 races early? I don't think it was ever clinched before Homestead in the Chase era, although it came pretty close to that a couple of times.

Don't feed the trolls.

OK, guess I misread your post.

It does kinda suck watching a driver have to finish 15th or better at Homestead to win the championship.

Eh, nature of the beast. Not every championship battle is going to have a "Game 7" moment. I mean Hel, The Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII 43-8, but you don't see Roger Goodell going "Okay, for the 2015 Super Bowl, points are going to be resetted at the end of every quarter and at the end of every quarter, both teams will have to eliminate x amount of players til at the 4th quarter, each team only has the best players going all in!"

No, for all the faults that Roger Goodell has for running the NFL, *coughRayRicecough* He at least is smart enough to realize that not every championship battle need to be a Game 7 moment.

pretty sure that if goodell starts usin "game 7 " analogies for super bowl format changes.....
............he won't be around very long ! in nfl anyway ! :D

It does kinda suck watching new fans think that this points format is legit.

what will older fans think .......if 24 wins sunday ? he'll be in final 4 at homestead.
due ta new chase format .......not on points .

He can win it all and I'll still think this points system is a sham.

BTW, he's leading the old format, so I'm missing your point about points :idunno:

if 24 wins sunday.......points are irrelevant ta him til '15 season starts.
he's only gotta beat tha other final 3 at homestead. period. due ta new chase format.

Haven't had time to frequent the forums as much as I'd like this week but I see that we are still trying to figure out this season under all kinds of formats. Can we do one where the Pocono winner gets a bye to Homestead?
I'm surprised Brian France didn't write that in once Junior fell out. ;)

I'd prefer a rule where since Atlanta used to be the season finale the Atlanta winner gets credit for winning the Cup.

I did, too.

Thought that was a well, nice round number. 10 races, 10 chasers.

Also liked the 5 points break away from each position all the way through 10.

This whole extending the spots for the chase got started because Jr. couldn't keep a top 10 in points to save his life. Then drivers got too lazy when it became a top 12 then it has gotten worse from there.
So why didn't they go to 12 the year after Jr missed it? I mean to do something because Jr missed the chase waiting 2 years is surely risky and oh jolly jeeze that didn't work for him as he missed it with 12. Didn't add any more drivers either.

My point being they didn't do it because Jr missed the chase, they did it because they wanted to just add more to it.

I think it was a combination of Jr and Gordon missing it in '05 and defending champ Tony Stewart missing it in '06.

THAT could make sense, pretty sure this has been said before also when I pointed it out. But people always still just want to say "CAUSE JR MISSED THE CHASE!!!" funny thing is, most of the time it's Gordon fans and he's the only driver ever to be given a new made up spot on the spot. Yeah Gordon would have probably made it if not for Clint and MWR doing the stuff they did, but hey at least Jr's never been given a new spot in the chase from missing it.

Funny, isn't it? I see this thread about "the real championship" and, when I pull up the standings on NASCAR.com, it looks different than this thread.

I went to the NASCAR website and it was just a picture of Oprah Winfrey shouting to everyone, "YOU get 4,000 points! YOU get 4,000 points!"

I actually liked the 12 drivers in the chase, seemed about right. 10 didn't seem like enough and 16 is too many.

Yeah 12 is perfect, and if we got to have a chase 12 is the number it needs to be.

Question is, do we do Top 10 in points plus two wild cards, or just Top 12 in points?

We had 12 in the Chase just last week and everyone was still bitching about it. :)
I meant starting with 12. 16 just seems like a lot. Did Aric Almirola really need to be in the Chase? However, had he slipped through the cracks of the elimination rounds and won it all, it would have been interesting to see his rain....I mean...his reign as champion.

Before they charge it again I would like to see one of the got a really lucky ass win drivers win the Championship.

I know one thing...if I was one of the final four at Homestead, I would cheat the hell out of my car. If a final four driver wins Homestead and after all the celebration and fanfare that goes with it, do you really think NASCAR would take the win/championship away if they find an infraction? It'd be a PR nightmare for NASCAR if they did that, especially in the first year of this format. So it might be worth a shot.

Hell if all four cheat it would be even better. Would be bigger than anything cheating wise in Nascar history imo. Probably would find away to change it fast for next season.

I'm sure we'd never hear about it if that happens.

I think some of us have handled the new chase format kind of like the 5 stages of death:

Denial (there's no way they'll ever do this to the chase)

Anger (they better not do this to the chase or I'm done with NASCAR!)

Bargaining (well, maybe they're just floating this idea to see what everybody thinks)

Depression (oh no, they really did this to the chase)

Acceptance (well, I guess this is what we've got, let's see how it goes)

Pretty accurate haha.

Here's a question for y'all . Was ' win and you're in ' an attempt to give Danica a chance to make the chase ? After all, she might have pulled off a Trevor Bayne at Daytona .
