"That is what this year is about — stepping out and going after it, more so than (last) year," Dillon said. "I think people know how we approached last year — and we did it right — but now it's time to make fire."
"I know it takes more than what I gave it last year," Dillon said. "The good thing is we had a decent year last year and when you know what those are, you should be able to take those and make them better."

I've noticed the sophomore year is when drivers tend to wreck more cars.

You may be right, but his history so far has been better his second year.

The second season in the same automobile seems to work for him.
Dillon won the Camping World Truck Series championship in 2011, his second full season racing trucks. He moved up the then-Nationwide Series the following year and won the championship a year later in 2013.

considering he didn't have any DNF's in cup last year, one DNF would be more than last year.
I hadn't realized he finished all the races last year. It makes sense to me though. He didn't get a ton of camera time since he raced more conservatively than he did in his Xfinity days. Rarely did you see him wheeling the car on the edge like fellow rookie Kyle Larson. And it's not really fair to compare the two. I think we will see Kyle Larson grab a cup win or two which will put him in the chase. I'm thinking Dillion will finish the year somewhere between 17th and 25th.

If he does the top 16, he may make the chase.

Yeah he could. It will be interesting to see if he gets faster this year. He did a good job of finishing races and getting the seat time in. Wasn't over driving the car and wadding it up. Doesn't make for good TV highlights, but he won as much money as Larson, and didn't destroy any equipment.

Larson drives for Chip who wants to win it all.
Dillon drives for granddad who loves making deposits.

You are quoting Austin Dillon. Good thing you are not biased. :D

Maybe drive into the back of somebody during a restrictor plate race? Wait.

Not sure why a lot of people don't like him.

I'm a Hendrick fan, mainly the 24, but I think it would be fantastic for the Sport if he took it to the next level and added another young gun to the duo of Elliott and Larson. It would make things a lot more interesting.

There are a couple of great young guns coming that will give Elliot and Larson all they can handle. Besides that when Larson starts winning he will find some veterans a lot harder to pass. So far Chase hasn't had any real competition, that will change when he starts cup racing.

Wasn't it one of granddad's drivers that punted Larson at Phoenix so he'd have a chance to "win it all" at Homestead? ;)
ah yes and that was the shot heard round the Nascar world. :growl: That and this combination:

But I thought we were talking about Austin Dillion.o_O

So what does that have to do with Dillon being successful and proving competitive with the two top young guns?

The more competition the better.

People don't like him because they feel that all of this was handed to him. Our Champion said so once. I don't mind him. Think the Dillons are fine when they aren't running into my guy during the Chase.

I think they will all draw more new fans and make it more interesting for the long time fans. I'm looking forward to see how they do, can't forget Blaney who will be running a bunch in cup for the Woods brothers. They are one of the oldest teams around in all of racing, everybody loves their story. They all are going to be pushing to make a name for themselves. I think Dillion's number will be called more this year

Austins future is tough to predict. Larson is a better raw talent. But I could see Austin getting better every year.
Aside from likes or dislikes I think all will agree he has acess , and will be getting great guidance from his inner circle for years to come.

Papas boy forever the tag might as well be tattooed on him. But I dont think he is lazy, I think he is dedicated and wants it all.

I just dont know how good he will be, and the hat screams artificial superficialness.

A long way down the road: but if he develops into an elite driver, could the team and car that got him there become a hinderance or limitation

And thats where the story ends

Atta boy.. Get crazy... I was very impressed with him although over shadowed by Larson he didn't set the world on fire but he ran a great season for a rookie and I believe finished more laps than anyone except I believe Jeff Gordon .... My bold prediction is Dillon winning a race before Larson.

I foresee RCR will be hiring a bunch more fabricators to build new cars and hang bodies this year.

its easier to slow a guy down than speed them up. I know wrecked cars suck but only those that have tested how far you can go, can know where the limit is. I don't think either of the dillion boys are going to be very succesful in the sport.

Hence why I think he won't place as high in the championship this year. Finishing every race is a tough task to replicate and considering how much DNFs hurt with the current points scale just a couple of them before the Chase will mean he'll have to win a race or make up at least forty or so points in the other twenty-something races.

It's easier to make a fast driver consistent than to make a consistent driver fast.

I don't know how successful either will be but I do think Ty will wind up being better in Cup.

See that's fine, you don't have to like him but having another successful driver would only be good for the sport.

Hell I don't like Keselowski, but having him in the sport is damn good thing. Sport would be worse off without him.

That's the only point I'm trying to make. The more talent and successful drivers in this sport the better off we are as fans. More competitive = more entertaining.

well you can't win the race if you're not there at the end of the race. so who knows what they were trying to do last year to get ready for this year. so we will see how it plays out.

Dillon is basically a lesser talented Paul Menard. Actually at least Paul Menard is likeable. Dillon is the worst thing to happen to NASCAR in a long time hopefully his medicocre career flames out soon so we don't have to see him and his lame cowboy hat around the garage anymore.

I love your optimism, but as long as Grandpappy can afford it, or get the right sponsorship package together, he'll keep Austin in a ride.

If this is right then, he'll stall out in cup and be a back marker for his entire career.

Him winning that NW championship without a single win is the worst thing to happen to NASCAR.

Specially when Hornish had the better overall results.

Let's not forget what good old NASCAR did to help out young boy Austin at the end of homestead.

A joke.

Jury is still out, it's only been one season. I think it will really matter once Ty jumps in a couple of years, if not after this year in Xfinity. Ty seems a bit more aggressive than the older brother, but I think Austin is good. Menard has gotten faster over the years, if he can get faster, so can Austin. I'm a lot more optimistic than others though, but always give rookies another year to ensure it wasn't a flash in the pan. In this case, I would like to see him be more aggressive and push more to prove he's not just there because of money, but that the talent is there.

Didn't wreck all of last season, got a nice pole at Daytona, four top-10s', and finished in 20th in the standings. Nice start, but lets see some aggression after racking up the mileage of learning. Menard likeable btw? He doesn't say enough to be liked and I'm a Menard advocate. If Austin is the consistent, more patient brother. I wonder what Ty will be like once he makes the move?

This is beginning to be a Danica style bashing thread. I'm earmarking some of these posts for the I told you so thread when the brothers start kicking azz. I'll have the plates of crow standing by.
