California Speedway was always an underrated track, people just didn’t like the fact the Southern 500 wasn’t on Labor Day.

This is the common fall back to say when older is sometimes better than newer. Fans were PO’d when the Southern 500’s Labor Day date was taken from Darlington and given to Fontana. The best I can remember, Fontana was held in a high regard at least a higher regard than Texas and Kansas by the fans.
 
It would behoove some people to pay attention to direct quotes from Ben Kennedy...jus sayin.

I have a different memory. I remember people hating Fontana in the early-mid 2000s. The finishes got better but it was still average at best, definitely not worth of the "OH GOD HOW COULD THEY TAKE THIS AWAY FROM US?" reaction I've seen from some.

The best thing to happen to Fontana was the original asphalt wearing. If they had repaved the original configuration, we'd get a decade of boring racing before things got exciting again.

Probably hated it because Dale Jr was constantly running horrible in Fontana. lol

It’s just kind of meandering always blaming these tracks when the racing is bad. At what point will the cars be pointed at as a problem?

There are some objective track conditions that make for poor racing. For example, a wide green race track with a single groove is not going to produce a lot of passing and will disproportionately benefit teams that hit on the right set up. The problem is that attempts to fix that (PJ1...etc) only make things worse.

Sad they can’t get rid of Iowa & Gateway for other markets. Nothing special.

I think Iowa has about 30k seating capacity so between a small number of seats and an inaugural event I’d expect it to sell out quickly.
 
I’m still waiting on a few more standalone tracks like Rockingham & Road America, Mexico City, other New markets for the Xfinity Series on The CW. Maybe even St. Louis or North Wilkesboro or IRP deserve something including a possible standalone.

I’m not sure if I really like the 2024 schedules other than Iowa.

It’s a shame how NASCAR & SMI sorta waste money on some things when they could fix up California & Atlanta back to non-gimmicky racing. There’s other American markets they refuse to spend $$ on as well.

Irwindale ain't bad but it’s still in a very industrial area and would need a lot of seats and amenities built up.

I'm looking forward to Iowa for two reasons.

1.) It's a solid racetrack and I'm honestly glad to see this track get a Cup date.
2.) NBC takes over, meaning no more Fox Sports.

It’s a good racetrack but the lack of seating expansion is a bit eh.

Yeah, 'cause we need yet another plate track. Unlike Atlanta, at least SMI won't be sacrificing a perfectly good track this time. And 49 feet wide; that will satisfy the wreckage lovers.

I consider anything to be an improvement. Would like to them paperclip one end of the track to get an egg shape that would eliminate the pack racing along with some 80 grit sandpaper like asphalt.

But unfortunately they will probably go with the pack racing option

If it don't get any better they will have time rename it to Fort Worth Speedway
