Kind of makes you wonder how anyone drove those 1000hp flat bottom Can Am cars.

It’s kinda crazy that they figured on having active rear wings without anything up front to help maintain the balance in the first place. So much wasted time has passed now.

And no matter what, it’s all still a bandaid trying to cover up woefully underpowered PU regulations cooked up by marketing departments.
 
AMuS reported that Red Bull and Aston Martin were pushing Alonso to make a decision within the next two weeks, but Alonso wouldn’t have wanted to compete against Verstappen. The difference being that Max can afford to wait much longer before any potential decision to leave Red Bull.

I'm a little disappointed actually. Fernando has been looking as good as ever in the first few races but I was excited by the prospect of him maybe joining Red Bull for one last hurrah.

Basically his only play.

Mercedes doesn’t look like they’re looking for a long term guy. They really want Antonelli possibly as soon as next year even.

Red Bull I don’t think was ever in play for Alonso. Checo is doing a pretty awesome job as the number two so he’s looking good for a resign with them. It was retirement or AM for Alonso.

Checo looking competent again has been an underrated storyline so far this season, imo. Guy was spinning in every practice session and getting eliminated in Q2 every week last year, it felt like. So far he’s back in form.

Supposedly Mercedes and Sainz are both very interested in each other, but Merc want to do that 1+1 contract structure they did with Lewis while Sainz wants 2+1. Toto is still gung-ho on Antonelli and would probably want him in their car no later than 2026, as long as he progresses as they’d like.

Mercedes is being weird with their contracts. They already effed up by letting Hamilton walk because they wouldn't bend on the simple 2+1 deal he wanted. They played themselves. Now Sainz wants the same, so it will be funny seeing how they play that out if they give it to Sainz.

I'm glad Lewis didn't end up trap with that contract though. Mercedes are thoroughly cooked until the 2026 regs and who knows if they'll flop again.

You don't need ESPN if you have F1pro. It shows everything ESPN does. plus testing and F2. The video archive goes back to 1970 and there are plenty of shows like Joylon Palmer's analysis, and just tons of stuff. I haven't turned on ESPN since I got F1pro.

I just meant that I gave myself no other legal out for watching F1 once I cancelled ESPN. At least if he has that, he can always watch that way though F1Pro is a million times better.

I like the F1pro broadcast better than the ESPN one anyway. Croft does a great job on ESPN, but the screaming is too much for me. I have not turned on ESPN since I got F1 pro.

Sprint Q gave us an interesting lineup with Norris on pole and (of all people) Hamilton alongside. I don't think Mercedes has found anything. The conditions just played into their hands and Hamilton was mighty. I would be very surprised if that speed will hold up over a GP distance. If it rains, all bets could be off.

This is probably going to be Max's poorest starting spot all year (barring penalties) so this could potentially be the best race of the year. My guess (if it's dry) is that Max will probably take the lead on the first DRS opportunity. If it's wet that may take a little time because Max couldn't get any heat into the tires.

Sorry I took so long to address this.

In 1969 the FIA tried to ban the Porsche 917's movable flaps right in the middle of the Lemans weekend. Porsche threatened to go home, so they relented, but they did manage to ban the flaps on the slower 908s.

They did all of this for "safety" and now 50 years later they want to try movable aero again? If they are spinning out of the straights they are probably taking too much wing off so the cars aren't bog slow.
 
Something I just noticed is both Skanks are in the top ten. That's a great result for them.

I guess it’s more nuanced than that. The 2026 chassis regs aren’t due to be set until the end of June, but they’ve been working through sims and whatnot to help finalize them. There was one team who believed they could use active aero on only the rear wing, and when the other teams went and tested it they confirmed that it was pretty much impossible, and that both the front and rear need to be active. And that will be implemented in so-called ‘aero zones’ where the car will be activated from its normal downforce configuration into low-drag mode.

But, as @virtualbalboa alluded to, this is all to compensate for the 2026 engine formula having a much less substantial ICE and more substantial electrical component that will still run out of juice before the end of the straights anyways.
 
Sprint race was awesome. Highly entertaining battle for the final podium spot between Alonso-Sainz-Perez-Leclerc.
 
Hamilton scared me. Thought he had a prayers chance there.

What a joke that Red Bull is. Starts P4, wins by s almost 15 seconds in 19 laps. 😮‍💨

He put Norris in a blender at the start. Nice to see him be aggressive and lead some again at least.

Max pulling out over 1s/lap after he took the lead is actually nuts. If he grabs pole later on and keeps that pace tomorrow he’ll win by a minute.
 
I guess that brief hope we had for a good fight was unfounded.

But that's not so bad because we have put up with domination for the last 35 years. We had a few good years, but it was almost always Mclaren Honda, Williams Honde, Wiliams Renault, Ferrari Mercedes and Red Bull pounding everyone else. At least now never know who is going to be fighting behind them, and let's give the telecasts credit, they seem to catch all of it.
 
I just watched the sprint and notice Max's passes were all DRS, but he didn't blow them into the weeds like he did last year. What happened to that huge Red Bull DRS advantage?
