Race Team Alliance Appreciation Thread

Seriously????

I don't think allowing a family member to have stake in a team would be terrible. It all depends on who it is. In reality is it really any different than Dennis owning a team and driving for another?

How is that working out for Penske? I don't follow Indycar very close but I guess it does work? Personally I am on record saying that Nascar should never give up control on the final say when it comes to the charters.

That would be like Roger Goodell buying part of an NFL team. That's a wayyyy bigger conflict of interest than a driver like Hamlin owning a team he competes against

Eh, not even close from where I stand. Goodell is a figure head. Nascar is a 100% family owned racing series in debt to nobody.

Teams are demanding four terms in the new charter agreement: 1) 45% of traditional media revenue 2) Permanent charters 3) 33% of new revenue 4) Greater governance powers.

Yeah, this **** ain't getting resolved.

The first two demands are reasonable. The second two are not.

Time to make a move, Kelley.

10 years from now these things will be worth north of $ 100,000,000.

How this is a business. It's not like they get a family discount or top secret info

I see your point, but then again just how much do you need? She is doing pretty well keeping JR's head out of the clouds and making some decent bucks where they are.
I don’t think it’s about the money. It’s about fielding cars in the Cup Series.

I wonder how badly NASCAR and General Motors want the Earnhardt name in the big show every week?

Jr and Kelly are making bank at every turn and still have a life. Maybe they don't want to be burdened with the addition media scrutiny.

Just a thought.
According to Jr himself they just break even at JRM and that's the main goal

Given recent events, it doesn’t seem like the paddock feels that level of trust anymore.

Jim France already co-owns a championship-caliber team in IMSA and has for many years. It hasn’t ever really resulted in one massive issue, but there are some occasional on-track incidents which make you question if it would’ve been treated the other way by race control had it not involved Jim’s team. I think it was actually more of an issue when NASCAR was directly funding Chip Ganassi’s Grand-Am team through the aughts, and there were some more suspect on-track shenanigans that seemed to benefit CGR more often than not.

At any rate, for a series as mainstream as NASCAR, I’m not sure that potential conflict of interest is worth the scrutiny that would be associated with everything that follows.

I said over a month ago this was not going well. Also no wonder SHR launched a fire sale. Per the article:

Multiple team owners told The Associated Press that NASCAR’s most recent proposal — delivered almost two weeks ago — was one of the worst offers yet from the stock car series sanctioning body.

Among the complaints: The France family, which owns NASCAR as a private company, still won’t budge on making the charters permanent, the series made rollbacks from previous offers and the proposal now includes a provision that would allow the France family/NASCAR to purchase charters, which are at the heart of series’ business model.

NASCAR’s latest offer was for charters that are guaranteed for seven years, and an option for another seven years after that. It also included a cost cap and, in addition to the France family being allowed to buy charters, a provision in which NASCAR would allow private equity firms to buy into charters.

Teams are now worried that Front Row’s announcement [to buy a third charter] is an indication some of the smaller teams are ready to take NASCAR’s offer despite an alliance that all 15 would stick together in negotiations. Yet there is no clear fallback plan.

The teams don’t want to start their own racing league, and believe NASCAR would move on without the likes of Hendrick Motorsports or Joe Gibbs Racing or Team Penske if they decided to boycott races. Such a scenario would leave it to fans to decide if the replacements — likely drivers and teams from lower-level series — provide a watchable product.”

The most successful, most profitable and most valuable professional sports organizations currently operating in North America are wholly owned and operated by their franchisees / team owners.

It's a big game of chicken, nothing more. We've heard for a couple months now that some of the smaller teams are OK with the current proposal. Assuming they sign the deal and keep running... it's not like JGR and Hendrick are gonna say "yeah we don't like this deal so we're just gonna close down shop and sell all our stuff for pennies on the dollar". The teams will fight and claw for every dollar they can get out of the $1.1 billion/year. They'll wait til the 11th hour to sign a deal and probably do a very light protest of some sort and call it a day.

The France family had an absolute dynasty of a business and maintained complete power and control for 75 years while other sports leagues had strikes, lockouts, and other self-destructive behavior. Unfortunately, that seems like the path we are on once the France's lose control. That's why they want 3 charters max per team.... dilute, dilute, dilute.

If this does somehow fall apart, NASCAR should be kicking its self for paying open teams nothing more than the damn tire bill. If there was just 5-8 open cars chomping at the bit for a charter, the current charter holders wouldn't play such hardball knowing there's someone ready and eager to take their place.

Double edged sword Auntie... careful what you wish for...

Lockout page on wikipedia-

Jim France has called their bluff and now the big teams are ultimately going to wind up taking a lesser offer as time ticks away. They don’t really don’t have anywhere else to go, they don’t want to establish their own series (nor do they have the resources to, and the lead time would be significant), and if they ‘boycott’ they’re not bringing in any revenue from the series and sponsors bail.

In this case, both sides would lose in the event of a strike or lockout.

NASCAR’s tracks get a 65% share of TV revenues per event on top of the 10% share due the sanctioning body. Wild guess … NASCAR’s take for the Daytona 500 is $300 Million. How do you assemble a field of 30 cars suitable for 200 MPH racing in February?

Somehow, they’ll get a resolution.

Is it easier for NASCAR to find teams to run on its tracks, or for the owners to find (oval) tracks to run on? I suspect the former.

But I don't expect either question to be relevant.

IMO this will never get solved until teams agree to a spending cap. Look at the 23XI shop and tell me teams are broke....
